If they have to be up at 7am...

My 8 year old goes to bed at 8pm, but probably doesn’t actually go to sleep until 8:45/9pm as he reads for ages.

He has never, not once in his life, slept past 6am, even if he’s been up until 10 or 11pm, so your addendum of ‘if they have to be up at 7am’ might just as well be written in Classical Greek for all it makes sense to me.

babyyodaxmas · 15/03/2021 20:20

This is a good chart

What time does your 8 and 10 year old go to bed...
babyyodaxmas · 15/03/2021 20:22

It would suggest 8:30-9.
I would probrably try to have them in bed for 8:15

MrsPworkingmummy · 15/03/2021 20:23

My 9 year old has her bath, is allowed time on her computer until 7 then comes down for TV and chill time with us until 8. She goes up, has a story and is asleep by 8.30/9. She takes melatonin and has never slept through the night.

RevolvingPivot · 15/03/2021 20:23

Dd8 wouldn't go to bed at 8.30, 9.00 is proving difficult. Dd10 is saying 9pm is too early. With lockdown bedtimes went out of the window.

OP posts:
RevolvingPivot · 15/03/2021 20:24

Mine are usually awake at 10 even if I take their phones off them at 9.

Ds10 goes to bed at 9, straight to sleep. Wakes at 7am ish but I’m usually up so can be earlier

Hankunamatata · 15/03/2021 20:25

8-8.30. They listen to an audio book and usually asleep by 9 when I go to check.

WreckTangled · 15/03/2021 20:26

Ds(8) up at 7, read until 7:30 then lights out. Dd(10) up at 8 allowed to read until 9 but is often asleep before then. I usually wake them around 7, sometimes they're up before.

Hankunamatata · 15/03/2021 20:26

Devices stop at 7.30 on school night.

ElphabaTheGreen · 15/03/2021 20:32

Zero screens here for the DCs after 6pm - no TV, no computers, definitely no phones (which they don’t have anyway and will not be allowed to have them in their rooms once they do). It depresses melatonin and makes it more difficult to fall and stay asleep.

WreckTangled · 15/03/2021 20:33

Oh mine don't have a tv in their room and neither has a phone. They do watch tv before they go to bed but that's it. No iPads or games consoles during the week either.

Sarah180818 · 15/03/2021 20:35

My DD is 9. We go up at 7 and read for half an hour. She can then read, draw, lego etc...in her room but lights out by 8.30 on a school night. No tv or ipad though

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 15/03/2021 20:36

Mine go and 8pm, but do read for a bit after. Usually asleep by 8.30, 9pm at absolute latest.

Get up at 7.30 for school.

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/03/2021 20:38

No screens past 7 here. Bed 8pm and she can read if she's not tired. 10 yo.

HamCob · 15/03/2021 20:39

8 year old here.
Upstairs about 7. Bath, PJs then a book - Harry Potter Audio book at the min.
In bed about 8.15
Sometimes reads for about 15 mins. Asleep 8.30-9ish
He doesn't have a phone and his console has a timer of 2hours on a weekday. No screens at all after 7.

YellowDaffidols · 15/03/2021 20:40

My 9 year old is reading in bed right now, probably lights out 8 45 on average.
The 11 year old is in the shower, and will go up to read in about half an hour. Lights out 9 30, but I'd often still awake at 10
They dont have to be up til 7, but are usually waiting for 6.30 to put the lights on and play with the cat!!
They would laugh at the suggestions in the table above, but I can see it could form a starting point for discussions.

ElphabaTheGreen · 15/03/2021 20:42

With lockdown bedtimes went out of the window.

I’ve heard this so often on here and IRL. I just can’t get my head around it. I NEED them to be in bed by 8pm for my own sanity, especially if I’ve been around them all day! No way have I got lax on bedtimes - I’d go even madder!

Allegra82 · 15/03/2021 20:42

My DD is 8.5. Lights off is usually about 8, but she is often still awake (come out for the toilet) until 8.30. I would like her to go to sleep earlier, as I have to wake her up most mornings

FrainBart · 15/03/2021 20:42

DC (8 and 11) are sent upstairs at 9pm, takes them 15 mins getting ready for bed and they enjoy me reading to them for 15 mins. So 9.30pm lights out and they're usually asleep by 10. In the morning they're up around 7.30am.

On weekends it's upstairs at 10pm.

Natsku · 15/03/2021 20:43

10 year old DD goes to bed at 8pm, has to be up either 6:30,7:30 or 8:30 depending on day but bedtime stays the same. Doesn't fall asleep for ages though so I'd say she gets around 7 or 8 hours sleep on the shortest night.

Dancingalong · 15/03/2021 20:47

6 year old and 9 year old go up at 8pm, we take it in turns if both me and DH home to read with them. 6 year old usually asleep soon after, 9 year old can continue to read or play quietly with a Lego car or something in bed until he falls asleep, but usually just goes to sleep. I believe they are both asleep now, but sometimes it can be 9.30 and he’s still awake.

MarchToSchool · 15/03/2021 20:49

8pm, read for 30 but DD was having difficulty waking so it's now 730 for her (8) and 745 for DS (11). DS has never been an issue waking up. Neither have phones and aren't allowed iPads during the week.

RevolvingPivot · 15/03/2021 20:49

I feel so ashamed. My own fault.

OP posts:
Dancingalong · 15/03/2021 20:49

Should have said they don’t have to be up until 7am, 7.30 some days, but usually awake by 6.30 especially 9 year old. They usually just check in with me and then take themselves downstairs.
