Aibu to think that we would have more successful rape prosecutions if police could easily identify a perpetrator by their DNA ? Do you think a national database would have a preventative effect ?

There is a national dna database. There has been one since 1995.

However, since the vast majority of sex offence cases, hinge on the issue of reasonable belief in consent rather than whether intercourse took place, obtaining a DNA profile from semen is not particularly helpful since it does nothing to prove whether an offence took place. The exceptions are crimes involving underage victims or animals where the presence semen on an intimate swab is generally sufficient.

Most of the time people know their rapist. It's their ex or current partner.

In theory it's a good idea. In practice it's an ethical nightmare, frankly I don't trust the government not to sell the data to medical/insurance companies. What happens if there are data breeches and admin errors. No system is perfect and it scares me that not enough safeguards/ethical protocols would be put in place for people/automated systems not to balls it up.

O yes that’s a good point about breaches of security. I know there is a database of DNA from convicted criminals , I was thinking of everybody . I feel it might benefit in cases of stranger rape and murder but I may be naive .

You are joking right? ever heard of this think called civil liberties?

The country doesn't own a person's body.

YABU. I would not want my DNA stored by the government for them to use as they please.

The trouble is, if someone was mugged near to a bin that you dropped your dog poi in, and you accidentally touched that bin, you'd be hauled in for questioning.
Similarly, if a body was discovered near to where you you had a crafty fag then you'd be hauled in.
Maybe a haul of treasures was discovered near a bench that you'd sat on?
The list goes on.
Maybe Pandora was robbed but around that time, you'd tried on some rings?
The police would be vastly overworked eliminating everybody thus wasting valuable villain capturing time. Most villains are already known.

The national database doesn't just have the DNA of criminals but everyone that has ever had to give a sample even just for exclusionary purposes same with finger prints. The government has refused to delete them.
Add to that everyone who has ever done one of those ancestry DNA tests has already given permission (it's in the small print) for the police to use it for familial matches.
Men won't stop attacking women until the legal system starts investigating properly and the punishments are harsher. As it stands rape may aswell be legal and if I said what I believe has happened to all the flashers and voyeurs I'd probably be banned.
The real problem is that society tells men that women don't matter we're just here as service people look at the way we are being erased in language and law. In Scotland a cross dressing man has more protection than women oh and according to the Scottish government the word woman legally includes anyone who identifies as one.

Ethical nightmare. Don’t agree with voluntary DNA sample.

Sorry meant to add, this may help prosecute, but it’s not preventative and that’s where the issue is - not having victims in the first place.
