The Police Crack down Bill.

When is it being voted on?

Is no one else worried?

OP posts:
Ymlaen · 15/03/2021 17:18

Terrified.

Ymlaen · 15/03/2021 17:19

I've been on many prostests / marches over the years, never been any need for any more powers for the police.

First drum up hatred with lies.
Then give yourself Henry VIII powers.
Then ban protest.

Kendodd · 15/03/2021 17:57

The Human Rights Act is the next thing on their list.

Kendodd · 15/03/2021 18:00

And look at the polling, they're enormously popular. I agree OP, its terrifying.

Crankley · 15/03/2021 19:10

No, have you even read the policy paper?

BonnieDundee · 15/03/2021 19:19

Being discussed now in HoC. Being voted on tomorrow. If you're worried email or tweet you MP. We are still allowed to express an opinion for now

Yvette Cooper speaking really well

DdraigGoch · 15/03/2021 20:04

Nothing is forever in our unwritten constitution, you cannot bind a future parliament.

In any case, they aren't banning you from protesting. You can still shout a bit and wave placards about. They are banning things like criminal damage, gluing oneself to trains, blocking bridges etc. You know, the things which really endeared XR to the users of Canning Town station.

They are banning whatever Patel sees fit to ban

Sally2791 · 15/03/2021 20:11

I find the whole situation frightening at the moment, it’s like some people can see that we are being lied to and manipulated, but the vast majority have no idea. Not sure if it’s me that’s mad or them.

These activities are all covered by the criminal law anyway. You know that, right?

The bit about restricting protest is new though.

Hollanda40 · 15/03/2021 20:36

Crap!

Flyonawalk · 15/03/2021 21:07

Very worrying. Patel is proposing to ban noise made at protests, so chanting a slogan would be illegal.

Sadly this is a logical extension of public support for police in disbanding anti-lockdown protests last autumn.

The U.K. is becoming more and more a police state.

lljkk · 15/03/2021 21:25

Funny how people only complain now when the protesting is something they agree with. When protesters wanted something most folk disagreed with, that right to protest didn't get many defenders. Funny that.

Are we having our right to protest taken away - forever - today?
Flyonawalk · 15/03/2021 22:43

I think the tide may be turning. The latest heavy-handed policing at tonight’s protests is getting more media coverage. A former police chief is warning of the dangers of the proposed bill goes through.

It seems people are waking up.

52andblue · 15/03/2021 22:46

But is it too late @Flyonawalk?
Certainly, I'm really scared about this Bill.

LexMitior · 15/03/2021 22:56

Second reading is the start. You have plenty of time to make your feelings about the Bill to your MP.

VladmirsPoutine · 15/03/2021 22:58

Has anyone else seen pics of the met police guarding the churchill statue. It's just so pathetic. Potentially 10 years in jail for dephiling a statue but assaulting women is just 'one of those things'.

wonderstuff · 15/03/2021 23:04

I've written to my MP, expressed my shock at this government paying lip service to free speech and liberalism and then effectively banning protest.

I'd bet my house he'll vote for whatever BoJo tells him to vote for though. Angry

So when is it being voted on, is there a date yet?

Will contact MP tomorrow.

Criminal damage should be banned. Be grateful you are not in Scotland (apologies if you are) we no longer enjoy 'free speech' over the dinner table in our homes thanks to the Hate Crimes Bill passing last week with the votes of the SNP, Greens, Labour and LibDems. Only the Scottish Conservatives voted against.
