Not wanting to play/relax in front garden?

House is lovely but while at the front there is a fairly nice stretch of lawn the road we are on is right through the village and a fair few people walk past.

I don’t really want to be out there with dcs in the paddling pool or relaxing reading in a garden chair or sunbathing. It feels too exposed.

DH thinks this is silly. He has pointed out a garden at the back would more than likely be overlooked anyway.

So - AIBU?

I wouldn't like it on a main road. Some of the cottages in our village are like this on the quiet lanes and they have made with privacy with trellis arches over gates with roses growing up and bushes along the boundary. Could you do something similar x

I’m with you, I hate this - we had neighbours once who used their front lawn like a back garden. Garden toys, furniture, bbq, hanging her knickers out and all. It’s trashy.

NoProbLlamaa · 15/03/2021 17:30

Although I’m making a massive assumption here that there is a proper garden! I suppose if it is the only garden then that’s a different story

I lived in a reasonably posh street where the front gardens were the childrens play areas. However... We had 6ft hedges, it was a quiet road... And washing went in the back garden. As did our big paddling pool.

There is someone in our road that does this. It's looks awful but not only that they have no gate and have toddlers regularly out there. Ok they are supervised but it only take a moment distraction. We have lorries and all sorts as it's a high street.

Disfordarkchocolate · 15/03/2021 17:33

I'd love being able to sit in the front garden and watch the world go by. Lots of traffic would put me off though.

Easterbunnygettingready · 15/03/2021 17:55

Few wind breaks and a chair...

Crewtshirt · 15/03/2021 17:57

Only if you don't have a back garden. It is way to public.

ChewedClickyPen · 15/03/2021 18:00

We have a large front garden in a quieter part of the village and we love sitting there with a cuppa, or glass of wine in the summer evenings and watching the world go by.

I let DC play out there, but bring their stuff in between play times. If it was busier then we wouldn't

PattyPan · 15/03/2021 18:05

I think it's too exposed as well. Plus if the road goes through the village presumably there's a fair few cars on it all the time? That's breathing in the pollution, there's the noise and obviously the safety issue. If you have a back garden I'd definitely use that. If you don't, could you get a hedge or moderately high fence with some shrubs?

SmileEachDay · 15/03/2021 18:09

not only does this person use their garden for garden activities, she also wears knickers!!

stonewallsandfields · 15/03/2021 18:09

Not many cars to be fair as it’s very quiet here generally but a lot of walkers.

Iv think I'd be ok with dresed play is this is the bigger garden, bit wouldn't sit out there with a book unless it's a v long garden

Tumbleweed101 · 15/03/2021 18:18

My front garden is used as a back garden but we have a corner plot so access is to the side. My back garden is surrounded by three other gardens and the neighbours all use them. The front garden is bigger a d reasonably private with hedging. The only problem is road noise.

If it is a big garden and you can make it more private with fencing or hedging it seems silly not to.

LampsOn · 15/03/2021 19:31

It totally depends on the size of the front garden and how public it is. I personally don't see it as too much of a problem
