To ask what it’s really like to live in the Peak District?

Considering permanently relocating to Derbyshire this summer, looking at the village of Tideswell.

Currently live in Central London but now I can mostly work from home it’s an option to move up there. Husband super commutes but can fly from Manchester.

We don’t have any family ties to the area but we are both very outdoorsy and love walking. As it is we spend most of our weekends (pre-COVID) driving out of London to hike/cycle.

Moving there would also allow us to live mortgage free in our 30s and mean we could have a great lifestyle and also save for a very comfortable retirement.

Has anyone made the move? Loved it? Regretted it? It’s fairly low risk for us as we could always come back (no kids, no plans to have any) but I’m aware I may be romanticising the long winters and the culture shock of leaving London! Grin

Sheffield side is lovely and so is ashbourne and I also like Leek but what about the commute to the airport, who would realistically like to drive from there and back to Manchester airport every week ?!

Blueeyedgirl21 · 16/03/2021 11:14

@Peccary marple bridge yes!! I agree with this. It’s a lovely place and lovely walks. Also like Bollington and Pott Shrigley and Wincle. These would all be massively easier for the airport.

Sorry that post was to @KickBishopBrennanUpTheArse not @Peccary

@KickBishopBrennanUpTheArse (excellent name) waves back while prepping for scrap with New Mills

I do like to do a bit of Rightmove fantasy house shopping in Marple Bridge, Mellor etc

New Mills has a strong community feel with lots of events in normal times - the Lantern Parade is great and it feels as if everyone takes part.

I must live near a few of you, I'm off the A6 between Hazel Grove and Disley. I like it here although the A6 can be a pain, and since that 'bypass' opened we have so much more traffic coming down our road! We might consider moving but no idea where to atm. I like Marple, Marple Bridge, New Mills.. I still like Buxton but it's not as nice as it used to be. Great for walking and cycling though! OP you may find some of the small Peak district villages a bit of a culture shock after London!

chonkyy · 17/03/2021 21:12

@paddingtonbear1 high lane? Can't imagine what the traffic must be like it's always busy there!

Blueeyedgirl21 · 18/03/2021 10:53

@paddingtonbear1 I love Buxton but you’re right there’s a lot of deprivation and ‘rural poverty’, people always seem shocked when told this .

paddingtonbear1 · 20/03/2021 11:17

@chonkyy yes! It wasn't too bad when we first moved here but now our road is not that much quieter than the A6! There's no proper village centre here either like in Disley. We like the area though. Have been into Lyme Park quite a bit, it's on one of my jogging routes!

A few people have mentioned Buxton not being that nice. I would say don't write it off without visiting. The crescent in the centre (just like the one in Bath) has just been renovated and was due to open as a 5star spa when Covid hit. I have had a sneaky visit and it's lovely! There is also the Opera House which is amazing for a town of it's size plus a more modern arts centre next door. Together they host an annual festival of arts (with its own fringe festival) and there are loads of other smaller arts/music events throughout the year. There are areas that are a bit rougher- but it is a town not a village so I think you get that anywhere. The town has been awarded some grant funding to help make the town centre better and lots of the community are involved in shaping that. The expectation (pre Covid) was that the new Crescent would bring more tourism money in to the town as a whole and together with other initiatives could be the start of a new era. Who knows if that will happen. If you do visit- please try not to focus too much on the main road though. That is absolutely the worst part of town and not representative of the rest of the place
