To think travelling is overrated

Agitsanaamchange · 14/03/2021 21:19

In recent years, the many I met on travels or friends travel to stunt on social media, not necessarily to discover other cultures (often secretly wonder how much you can discover in 2 weeks).

Travelling is not for everybody, I find it stressful and heightens my anxiety.

I am a seasoned traveller but AIBU to think it is overhyped and misplaced snobbery for people to assume if you aren't a globe trotter you are close-minded or have no means.

Funny you say that I find travelling so stressful, and whilst I've been on a few city breaks I hated that tick box of places you felt you needed to achieve in the Lonely planets guide. Sometimes I just fancied a sit down in a nice cafe, not traipsing around a tonne of places, unable to truly take in the surroundings. It can all feel so competitive.

Pan2 · 14/03/2021 21:26

YABU - it's all very personal, so cant really make generalisations for others. I've traveled a lot and really appreciate it.

Lampan · 14/03/2021 21:29

Sure it’s not for everyone but I adore it. I don’t post much about it on social media (think one Instagram photo per trip). I do think you can learn a reasonable amount about another culture in two weeks. I wouldn’t assume that someone who doesn’t travel is closed minded or has no means, I would just assume their priorities are different from mine!

Sparklingbrook · 14/03/2021 21:30

YANBU. I have travelled but now I just wish I could be magically transported to places. I hate the whole airport thing and I do not find the journey part of the holiday at all. I hate long haul flights.

If I could cut out the time between leaving my house and arriving at the hotel reception I would be more keen.

DrManhattan · 14/03/2021 21:31

No i love it.

ghostyslovesheets · 14/03/2021 21:33

well you can't really experience a place until you live there for at least a year...

I mean come on - stop the one up man ship - some people ONLY get 2 weeks we can't all take 2 years off to find ourselves in India

I did live in Germany for a year and I loved it - I've also done all inclusive to Menorca and loved that!

Travel is not the same as a holiday btw - but you sound a bit superior in your judgment which isn't very nice

inkstainjetplanes · 14/03/2021 21:40

No I don't like travelling either. I am more excited to come home to be honest.

Sparklingbrook · 14/03/2021 21:42

My friend hates travelling/going on holiday. I remember her texting me as she was packing to go to Greece saying 'I want to come home already'. Grin
EileenGC · 14/03/2021 21:45

Well, I voted YANBU because I also hate people who think someone who is not well travelled must be close minded. People have valid reasons as to why they don’t travel much. I know close minded people who don’t travel and others who do, so these two issues aren’t related much.

YABU to say travel is overrated though. But then, YANBU to find it a faff either. I personally love it, all of it. The airports, the security lines, the long hauls and everything about it. In normal times I’m on 5-6 planes a month (work, I don’t holiday 3 times a month 😂), and I miss it terribly.

Some people love being at home. Others like me love living out of a suitcase and enjoy 26h flights with 3 stopovers and the lot.

ComtesseDeSpair · 14/03/2021 21:48

I go on different "destination" holidays regularly, and pretend to enthuse about other people's photographs of their soul-defining traveling on FB, but secretly believe that if we all spent more time maximizing our relationships with the places we spend most of our time and people we spend most of our time with instead of pursuing exposure to some contrived and abstract "somewhere else" we'd probably be better off.

To be honest, my best holidays, even those where I’ve travelled long distances to far-flung countries, have been those where I was travelling with or going to visit friends, and the destination was really secondary. I’ve been to NYC three times, for example, and never really seen the sights; but have enjoyed some ace bars and restaurants there with the friend I go to see.

Don't know where to begin with this.

Firstly I've never heard anyone make those assumptions.
Secondly, you sound incredibly judgemental.
Thirdly, if it is so 'overhyped', why did you go back after the first time, when you found out is wasn't all you'd hoped ? Confused

YABU

Sparklingbrook · 14/03/2021 21:51

DB travels all over the world for work. (well pre covid anyway) I think he's pretty numb to all the airports and sitting on planes for hours on end now. Just something he has to do.

Not for me. Ten minutes after take off on a long haul flight I'm done. I am not cut out for all that time spent in close proximity to strangers and shared facilities. Sad And after this pandemic I'm even less enthusiastic.

Maybe I could get on board with a road trip or something.

Mydarkside · 14/03/2021 21:52

I am a seasoned traveller

So you have had the luxury of making that choice and coming to that decision , and are now rejecting the experience as overhyped .
That is also a form of snobbery .

Moondust001 · 14/03/2021 21:55

Other than you, I have never heard anyone say that. Perhaps the misplaced snobbery is yours? I love travelling (and seldom only for two weeks). I frankly don't give a damn what you or anyone else likes. That's your business and why would I care whether or not you want or like to travel> Do what you want. Stop assuming that anyone else cares about it.

peak2021 · 14/03/2021 21:56

It is not for everyone. People such as the Border Force and Ryanair don't make it easier for those who are anxious about travelling.

Sparklingbrook · 14/03/2021 21:58

I do love the expression 'seasoned traveller' though not sure exactly what it means. Grin

ghostyslovesheets · 14/03/2021 21:58

I'm (hopefully) off to Italy in August - driving via the tunnel - down France - through the Mont Blanc tunnel - I can;t wait - but it's still less than 2 weeks so I probably wont learn or see anything

I love travel though

Your OP is so judgemental. You don’t see the irony?

That sounds more my sort of thing. Fingers crossed for you.
springtimesunshine · 14/03/2021 22:03

I love visiting other countries and cultures.

I hate getting there and back with a passion. It makes me stressed and anxious and reminds me how much I hate people! I get cross as soon as I start packing, even that annoys me.

But once you're there, it's fab, and worth it.

Sparklingbrook · 14/03/2021 22:04

Probably Himalayan Pink rock Salt none of your table salt. Grin

beyondtheshoe · 14/03/2021 22:04

Travelling is not for everybody true

but people who stubbornly refuse to even explore the world a bit and have no clue what they can possibly be missing, and how narrow-minded their world and opinion are .. well, they are not very interesting, are they.

I agree that someone who has "done Europe" because they spent 1 week in an all-inclusive resort in Italy once is missing the point.

The world is a huge place, so many cultures, so many places, I can't understand how someone could not even be interested to visit at least some of it.

I personally don't consider a staycation as a holiday, the lockdown is really making me feel claustrophobic, and not knowing if we'll be able to leave the country in May or in the summer is not making me happy.

Yes, I would love for the OP to come back and enlighten us. What would be your definition for proper travel? The kind that makes you a seasoned traveller? How long must one spent at the destination?
dotdashdashdash · 14/03/2021 22:05

I love traveling. I take virtually no photos and never post on social media about it.
