SchrodingersImmigrant · 13/03/2021 23:52

Toilet paper. Do not forget toilet paper as a first thing. Everything else can wait.

Lightbulbs? Or are they there? I read stories of people getting to the house and not having any lightbulbs there!

Flashlight (before you figure everything out, just in case)

Basic tool set

Blancah · 13/03/2021 23:55

If you have a dishwasher, you'll need tablets for it.
Also don't forget to have tea coffee & milk (or whatever your drink of choice is) near the top of the first moving in boxes.

Saucepans/colander. Breadknife. Kitchen broom and dustpan.

If you're the person who posted about escaping an abusive marriage, don't panic - you really need very little and you can do it when you get your breath back. You'll have a bed and your own front door key and that's all that matters. Good luck!

Absolutely agree with this!
And toilet paper.
Everything else can be brought in slowly. Do bit by bit. See how the house feels. Corner sofa? Double seater? Give it a week and you will know.

Blancah · 14/03/2021 00:07

Get a bucket, a packet of cloths, a kitchen surface spray, a bathroom cleaner & bleach.
B&m or home bargains are great for cleaning and laundry stuff for cheap.
You'll probably want to spray and wipe all the kitchen cupboards before you fill them.

1 tip I learnt from moving house, was to buy bin bags with those ties. Use elastic bands & tie around the top, hook part of several coat hangers with clothes on. Pull the bin bag up, over the clothes and tie underneath the hook part. You just hang them up when you arrive and no need to individually fold, re-hang things.

Things for new house-

  • Bed side lamp if you read at night
  • Fan. Essential in summer!
  • First aid kit
  • Sewing kit
  • DIY Kit with screwdrivers, tape measure, level (for hanging picture frames), hammer, nails etc
  • I keep a spare of all light bulbs, also a packet each of AAA & AA batteries for remotes etc. Maybe 9V, C and /or D if you have things needing those too.
  • A folder/booklet to store all warranties/receipts and instruction booklets for white goods/small appliances
  • A filing cabinet, or carboard filing folder for utility bills, documents etc
  • A shoebox to store menus of the local take-aways in your new area
  • Find out where the fuse box is, how to re-set it if tripped and read it for meter readings. Find out where the stop cock is.. Take readings before you move in, to check they tally with your solicitors documents.
  • A clock that doesn't tick loudly!
  • Asda sell large, wine glasses which are robust, but very inexpensive
  • A torch or headlamp
  • Blackout curtains
  • A houseplant or 3 makes me feel happy and homely

Thank you so much! Lots of things mentioned that I hadn't already thought of. Yes I can add slowly and just need the basics to begin. But feel much better with a plan/list. Something I can work through.

Curtains + nets/voiles plus something for hanging them up...Wilko do an extendable pole for a couple of quid and got some command hooks. Air freshener, carpet cleaning stuff, general cleaning stuff, something to put pictures up so you can start making it feel like home, doormat, food storage, large and small food bags, lamp/light shade, sandwich toaster... I splurged and bought a ninja foodi but obviously not an essential.
Spare key you can leave in a safe place,/ with someone you trust.
