Neighbours excessive barking dogs

Neighbour a few doors down has 2 dogs. They literally do not stop baking. It's relentless. In and out the garden all day long and each time they bark non stop until they're eventually brought back in. I'm working from home and I can hear it as if it's in my own garden. I can now feel myself on edge and waiting for it to happen/listening out for it. I can't concentrate on my work properly. Barking for the sake of it it seems, I think they're just yappy dogs in general. I feel like I can't relax in my own home and I am dreading summer so much. Owners don't seem interested, they're very ignorant at the best of times, in their hot tub every night for the past 2/3 weeks despite the weather. It started with really loud music but after the 4th night I had to ask them to turn it down as it was unbearable and I realised it wasn't going to stop anytime soon, which they did but it hasn't stopped the shouting which can be heard very clearly each night.

I'm pregnant and my fuse is short at the minute anyway but I just feel seriously fed up and miserable in my own home and I'm worried about the impact it's going to have when I'm already sleep deprived and have a baby and whether the excessive barking will affect sleep then whilst having to nap in the day (already woke me up at 7am this morning, and again first thing I wake to this morning).

Has anyone had any similar issues/have any advice?

Our neighbours did this and we bought a device that made a high pitched noise every time the dogs barked. The dogs hated the noise so over a period of time they stopped. Our neighbours also hatred the noise so they let them out less. Not good for our relationship with them, but I didn't care. The dog barking was endless and stopping my young kids from sleeping.

Ludo19 · 13/03/2021 22:48

Feel your pain regarding dog barking and hot tub. My NDN has both. Dog is just untrained. If it's left alone in the house it howls and barks and scrapes on the floors which are wooden so I can hear it as I'm also wfh. Hot tub is a whole other issue but I find empty cans rattle the most if you get my drift. I wish I could use the high pitch thing but I have 🐈

StoneofDestiny · 13/03/2021 22:52

Seriously anti social to allow dogs to bark and disturb their neighbours. The high pitched thing sounds like a good idea.

rainbowninja · 13/03/2021 23:24

You're definitely not being unreasonable, we have 2 small dogs (I'm not your neighbour 😂) and would hate it if they were bothering anyone. If they are getting enough exercise then they don't need to be out in the garden all day barking.

I second this. I've done it. My view was if they weren't going to train their fucking dogs then I would. It worked a treat.

Some councils have a section about noisy/nuisance dogs. Check if there is anything on your council website. Esp as you are 2 doors down, (not directly next door) I'd definately make a complaint to the council for follow up. Otherwise, the high pitched noise thing sounds wonderful and something I will keep in mind myself Grin

Where can I get one ? Sick of my neighbours 3 whining sausage dogs
ThereOnceWasANote · 14/03/2021 01:21

Just look on Amazon. They're not expensive.

toolatetofixate · 14/03/2021 01:29

@redorderlig

You can get automatic ones but my problem was a dog left at home howling all day while I was studying from home for my degree. So I bought a CD online that purported to do just the trick. Had it in the CD player and I had big speakers at the time. Whenever the dog started howling I whacked the volume up full and hit play. Stopped as soon as the dog stopped. And repeat.

It was a very high pitched noise that humans can't properly hear. There was a sort of hum in my speakers though as I was playing it full blast. I did that for a week every time the dog kicked off. Short burst just for the duration that the dog howled. He stopped immediately each time. Then eventually stopped altogether.

Was a godsend.

I felt bad but in my opinion they were already mistreating that dog by leaving it home alone for such long periods and letting it howl endlessly. I nearly lost my mind before I bought that cd.

blueroses8 · 14/03/2021 09:09

Interesting about the high pitched device, I will certainly look into that, would I just leave it outside? As they are not directly next door and a few doors down would the sound still be effective?

Once had experience of this - absolutely anti social yapping that would drive anybody demented.

ThereOnceWasANote · 14/03/2021 22:46

Yes - just leave it outside. I think they work over quite a distance. But I guess it depends how big your garden is.

murbblurb · 14/03/2021 22:52

I really hope that gadget works, op. The bastards up the road did this for years and the council could not stop it, the noise bar is very high. Has been quiet for a while so I hope the dog ( or the owners) have died. It is hell and the fuckers go out and leave the bloody things. Why do people who hate dogs buy them!

sipsmith1 · 14/03/2021 22:56

I relate to this so much.

My neighbours leave their yappy dogs in the garden all the time and they bark until they are let in. They bark if they are left alone, if my dog goes in the garden, if someone walks past the house. My 9 month old baby is woken up from almost every nap by them. It’s exhausting!

blueroses8 · 15/03/2021 20:48

My garden isn't very big so hopefully it works.

@sip that would give me the absolute rage if it's was waking my baby up from their naps constantly (which is what I fear will happen). I really just can't tolerate pure ignorant behaviour. Just found out there's actually 3 of them, they must of just very recently got another one, I thought the noise had increased a lot and this is why, they can't be arsed to train the ones they have!

Absolutely dreading the summer with them.

Ggeemerc · 15/03/2021 23:23

I think environmental health might deal with it. They don't have to say where the complaint is from. Have a look on your council website.

Yeah they do, I really feel like this warrants a complaint to them but I'm holding back because we don't plan on staying here forever, maybe another few years and I think complaining about them would affect us selling. There is just no escaping it, it's making me hate my home as I just can't relax.

Knock on the door. Ask them to take the dogs in or train them.

There is no excuse for this.

Noise will drive me to murder.

ivegotmyteddybear · 16/03/2021 17:22

I got the council to send them a letter after many texts back and forth.

They told me they couldn't do anything about the barking.... funny how the dog is silent now they've received a noise complaint!

Notavegan · 16/03/2021 17:22

I've dealt with this twice. Suggest a note through door, then report to council. Where I live at least it solved the problem. I think they got a letter recorded delivery.

blueroses8 · 16/03/2021 18:08

I was thinking about a note through the door but I wasn't sure if that would come across odd and couldn't think how to word it without telling them what I really think of them and their ignorance. Would it be ok to leave the note anonymously do you think? Any suggestions on how to word it? They seem quite intimidating from what I've heard and I'm here by myself the majority of the time as DP works away.

lifehack · 16/03/2021 18:28

I had to move house because of this, asking the neighbours, then going through noise complaints route, nope they stayed selfish, I had no idea why people let dogs bark and bark you can't enjoy being in your home and relaxing in the garden in the summer doesn't happen.
All you can do is try and talk to them tbh these kind of people don't care.

'We know they bark' says the owner..do ffing do something then Angry
TillyTopper · 16/03/2021 18:32

Keep a lot of barking at all time. Complain to the Environmental and Health Dept at your local council. They will get you to fill in a form which is a lot of the barking and make an assessment. They should go round and speak to them for you (unless you think they are friendly enough that you can do this safely!). Good luck.
