To not have known I SHOULD put a metal spoon in the microwave?

I've owned my microwave for 6 years. Clearly I'm not the most observant person in the world because I've spent my whole life panicking about accidentally putting metal in the microwave. Today I noticed a sticker on mine (inside the door-see picture) that clearly shows I should use a spoon when heating fluids. Couldn't believe it, so I got out the manual. Sure enough, it says I should always put a metal spoon into fluids whwn heating them, but not let it touch the sides of the microwave!!

How did I not know this. I've spent all my life believing if I put something metal in the microwave it will combust into flames!! Am I the only person in the world who didn't know this?

Is it a Neff one? Mine has that sticker. I have ignored it for 5 years so far, and the world hasn't ended.

TheGirlWhoLived · 13/03/2021 07:59

I put a little thing of butter in the microwave and it burst into flames (had a metal wrapper) that didn’t touch the sides!

Are you sure you have it right!?

Littlebutload · 13/03/2021 08:00

The sticker looks familiar so mine night have it too! I always thought it was no metal, in the microwave?

Lubiluxe · 13/03/2021 08:01

Argh I hope people read your full post as it could be really dangerous if people go putting metal spoons in the microwave!

(Obviously yours is a different model)

WannabeOT · 13/03/2021 08:01

That picture doesn't specify a metal spoon? I wouldn't. Someone blew up the microwave in my uni halls and it was bloody scary

IslaRoseGraceEtc · 13/03/2021 08:02

I put a plate with metal edging (fake gold leaf) in once and it sparked everywhere. Took weeks to get the horrible smell out of the kitchen. I don't think I'd be risking it with a spoon!

Buckingafout · 13/03/2021 08:02

I did know it but have never been brave enough to try!

Labobo · 13/03/2021 08:04

I once heated up a cup of tea in a mug that had a gold rim. Lighting flashes and long bangs from the microwave.

Lindy2 · 13/03/2021 08:05

I left a tiny bit of metal packaging on something I heated up once and there were sparks and popping noises within seconds. I'm not putting anything metal into my microwave ever again!

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 13/03/2021 08:05

That’s bizarre. I accidentally put a plate in with a tiny bit of gold leaf on it and it started sparking ferociously. The gold leaf was not touching the microwave.

Gice · 13/03/2021 08:05

PIL have this on their microwave, scares me every time I do it!

MyLittleOrangutan · 13/03/2021 08:06

It must be to do with it being in liquid that it's safe but like above poster, I put a butter wrapper in that only had a little metal on and it sparked. I'd never dare put a metal spoon in.
What classifies as liquid? Creamy soup? Custard?

EvilOnion · 13/03/2021 08:06

I just Googled it thinking you had it wrong but you seem to be right!

Liquids can "superheat" when microwaved and suddenly boil over when disturbed - so you'd be scalded by exploding boiling hot liquid when you lifted it out. The spoon somehow stops this from happening because of its rounded shape?!

I still wouldn't do it though. Use a plastic spoon 🤣

Yes, it says metal in the booklet, but to keep it 2cm away from the sides.

I have a Neff microwave with that sticker in it & I’ve ignored it.

After all, what crazy person would deliberately put metal in the microwave? Confused

TheSockMonster · 13/03/2021 08:08

I always picture this scene from American Hustle if anything metal was to end up in the microwave.

YukoandHiro · 13/03/2021 08:08

I wouldn't dare, I'd use a plastic spoon.

If you leave liquids to rest before getting them out this doesn't happen anyway

I just tried it. No sudden fire and the water heated quicker than normal!! It was a nail-biting minute!! 😂

It doesn’t have to be metal! Use a wooden spoon.
It’s to avoid liquids superheating and blowing up in your face when you turn move them.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 13/03/2021 08:10

Gosh, I wouldn’t dare either!

dontdisturbmenow · 13/03/2021 08:12

Very interesting. Nice to learn something new!

LunchWithAGruffalo · 13/03/2021 08:12

Our Bosch has the same sticker, I'm not great at remembering after years and years of avoiding putting any metal in. We always have the metal shelf in and do use metal dishes when using the combi settings.

I've only seen it on the combination microwave ovens, I presume they work in a different way.

Cattitudes · 13/03/2021 08:12

I did accidentally leave a metal spoon in when heating milk, it was virtually covered in milk. Spent 90 seconds wondering where on earth I had put the spoon and why the microwave sounded a little louder. The world did not end but I don't plan on repeating it again too soon.

Springersrock · 13/03/2021 08:13

I put a plate in the microwave forgetting it had a silver rim

It started sparking and banging pretty much instantly. It didn’t touch the sides at all

I’m always reheating cups of tea, never put a spoon in it and never had a problem. Will have to go and see if mine has that sticker
