This is a link to an article in an irish newspaper.
Irish feminists must avoid British trap of transphobia (via @IrishTimes) www.irishtimes.com/opinion/irish-feminists-must-avoid-british-trap-of-transphobia-1.4507862
Interested in your views about it. I think there's a lot of sense in it.

It is a testament to privilege. This women is never going to be locked up with someone like Barbie 'Kardashian but she doesn't give a shit about the women who are.

It smacks of anti British sentiment. Oh the British feminists are just AWFUL they're all transphobic. With apparently the bar for transphobia being knowing what a woman is biologically and having an understanding of how that biology affects women's lives.

It's simply not factual, it's no more than a propaganda piece by someone happy to conspire in the oppression of women to look woke.

Griselda1 · 13/03/2021 10:11

The anti British tone and the reference to West Brits are telling. What a complex world we've become for any young person navigating all the doubts and anxieties of puberty. An autistic school friend of my sons killed themselves recently, half way through a gruelling round of surgery and medication to be become a gender which they changed their mind a about becoming.
We seem to have lost the ability to accept diversity in a bizarre struggle to appear inclusive. The language built up and created around these issues is bizarre and exclusionary.

lifeturnsonadime · 13/03/2021 10:13

Well the fact that the article is written by a Canadian who doesn't even live in Ireland is not lost on me.

This is definitely about telling Irish women to be silent. Not to complain about self ID , definitely don't be like the British feminists.

Awful particularly the way that women and children have been treated in Ireland. This is putting them in their place under a new guise.

Sunhoop · 13/03/2021 10:14

I'm pretty sure some schools have adopted gender neutral toilets. I remember a primary school being lauded in the news for it a year or two ago. I can't remember where it was? A male principal implemented it of course Hmm but they said the parents were happy with it. I wouldn't be. I have two DDs and if their school tries this I will be the loudest voice in the room! Fine if it's in addition to male/female toilets but not as a replacement.

TurquoiseBaubles · 13/03/2021 10:14

MoreCraicPlease, the reference to the article was just to show how small (and overcrowded) the prison is. Mainstream media doesn't give us numbers, because under Irish law (self-identification) all the prisoners are women Hmm

The only way to know that there are male-bodied prisoners in the women's prison is to follow the court cases for named individuals, but identification of those individuals results in deletion so I'm not going to do that.

lifeturnsonadime · 13/03/2021 10:14

Apologies the writer is Irish living in Canada. But even so.

PegasusReturns · 13/03/2021 10:17

The article is hopeless nonsense but it will start to generate a conversation.

Self ID was introduced with no discussion in ireland. Women are waking up and they do not like it.

valadon68 · 13/03/2021 10:18

'Self id'

Great Freudian slip...

I don't know the law in Ireland well, but I thought that self ID was permitted there alongside several exceptions, such as not uniformly allowing TW in women's prisons and shelters? If this were true, there would be no direct comparison to be made and the premise of this article would be dishonest to say the least.

MoreCraicPlease · 13/03/2021 10:30

@valadon68 - have a read of @TurquoiseBaubles excellent points above. She says that there is a ban on reporting transgender separate to women in Irish prisons so the presence of 3 in Limerick women's jail is not widely known.

TurquoiseBaubles · 13/03/2021 10:34

This is the law society's take on the prison issue - they appear to be surprised that self-id means, erm, self-identification. www.lawsociety.ie/gazette/top-stories/male-bodied-transgender-inmate-housed-with-women-prisoners/ Back in October, there was one case, there now appear to be three with a few more coming up.

There do seem to be some exemptions to the Irish Gender Recognition Act, but I can't find the exact wording. I do know that one exemption is that women, no matter how they identify, can't become Catholic priests.

MoreCraicPlease · 13/03/2021 10:38

That f*#king says it all really..

MoreCraicPlease · 13/03/2021 10:40

Protect the institution that have caused generations of Irish women distress and hardship, but allow those with male genitals into crowded prisons with vulnerable women.

Zeev · 13/03/2021 10:41

Well that and there is a media ban from reporting on any incidents that may indicate a sky fall.

Yes, exactly. If all the negative news is hushed, of course you only see the positive. If Barbie Kardashian cannot be reported on as it'd be "unfair", one can only imagine what other stuff gets swept under the carpet.

MoreCraicPlease · 13/03/2021 13:08

Quite

PamDenick · 13/03/2021 18:55

Some excellent replies on the newspaper’s own site. Mainly along the lines of How Dare you... And, Women, This Is What You Should Think. Play Nicely With The Trans Folk...

TwoBreakingIntoOne · 13/03/2021 19:05

There is no benefit to women in removing their sex category and including males in the female sex category renders statistics useless.
We cannot know if there is an issue if TW crime is recorded as womens crime

YouSetTheTone · 13/03/2021 19:08

There’s a BAN on reporting unfavourable incidents of violence towards women in Irish prisons because the perpetrators are transgender?!

Because it might be unfair?

What about the unfairness of a woman being raped in prison?! She literally can’t escape.

Who legislated that reporting ban and does it happen here in the U.K. too?
