How many toys do your dc have? And what do they actually play with?

Sorry posting for traffic

I have 3 dc- 9, 5 and 3. We have a playroom packed with toys, none of which get played with however they trash the room on a daily basis (mainly the 2 younger ones). I’m so tempted to clear it all out and take them to the bare minimum but then I feel mean.

How many toys/ what type of toys do your dc play with?

Shit loads of toys. Only plays with two pastry brushes joined together with an elastic band. I despair Grin

SchoolMarks · 12/03/2021 16:03

Lego/Sylvanian/brio/marble track on a rota, only one out at once.
Jigsaws/playmobil
Craft. Say no more.
Outside: scooters, skateboards, badminton, tennis, football, basketball etc

14yo likes anything he can fidget with and Screen related.

8yo likes to draw, cycle, scoot and her doll.

SchoolMarks · 12/03/2021 16:03

Meant to say that's my 9 year old.

livingthegoodlife · 12/03/2021 16:12

Endless piles of toys.

Stuff that gets used:

Lego
Fancy dress
Marble run
Sylvanian
Barbies & dream house
Hama & aqua beads
Sometimes train track
Sometimes schleich animals

Its not a bad idea if you have the space to store it and rotate it. They can be overwhelmed by the choice and not know what to play with. Mine definitely play alone/together for longer when they have less choice.

AllisoninWunderland · 12/03/2021 16:19

My 3 dc mainly play with;
Lego & Lego train track
Marble run & domino rally
Nerf guns (ugh)
Schleich animals & dinosaurs
Soft toys
Toy kitchen
Pens/paper/paints/crafts etc
Bikes/scooters

Other than that a lot gets ignored so I ‘phase’ it out. I hide it for a few months. If it isn’t asked for it goes to the charity shop.

Sounds like you need to read ‘Simplicity Parenting’ by Kim John Payne. It’s an eye opener.

3yo ds loves his endless brio stuff, his cars and garages and his jigsaw puzzles. He has a play kitchen and accessories and that’s most things covered. I try to have a regular clear out so we don’t get overwhelmed with stuff, might not be a bad idea! But I always feel guilty doing so too, but it usually results in him playing better with fewer things. EVen just rearranging stuff every so often so he gets a bit of a rotation when he forgets about stuff he hasn’t played with in a while.

Loveitloveitloveit · 12/03/2021 16:25

Honestly it’s draining me just looking at the playroom. I’m thinking maybe box some toys and stick them in the garage. It just seems like such a waste of money- they’d rather play with cardboard tubes and boxes Confused

Everything gets used a little, nothing a lot.

The best thing to do is strip right back and store most things in a cupboad/loft and rotate every few weeks. You would be surprised by how much more gets played with.

RedBlackCandle · 12/03/2021 16:41

6 year old has a lot of toys. Most played with are her sylvanian families and her dolls house, plus her actual dolls. Less so the pushchair and accessories like the highchair now but the dolls themselves get played with loads.

She also likes Lego but has to be in the mood for it, it can go ignored for ages and then suddenly be played with loads.

BrowniesAreSuper · 12/03/2021 17:18

Ages 1 and a half and nearly 3. They have insane amounts but favourites are duplo, jumping on the couch and bed, train track, cups in the bath, and outdoor stuff - cozy coupe cars, sand, water tray and balls.

MrsWooster · 12/03/2021 17:19

We’re the same and going to strip it down-they’re overwhelmed and there’s no mental or physical space left to actually play with any of it.

trilbydoll · 12/03/2021 17:24

If they can't immediately see it they forget they have it. Two dds here, 5yo and 7yo. They mainly do arty stuff (I.e. make a mess) and board games with us. Other than that it's dressing up and acting out various stories, not really playing with anything at all.

VeganVeal · 12/03/2021 17:29

Vacuum cleaner, bucket and mop, duster and polish, iron and ironing board.

Somethingsnappy · 12/03/2021 19:06

@VeganVeal, I guess you don't need a cleaner then?! Grin

gingganggooleywotsit · 12/03/2021 19:10

5 year old has a silly amount but mainly plays with his dinosaurs, super heroes, trains, Lego and Pokemon.

JaceLancs · 12/03/2021 19:11

Arty crafty stuff was always a hit
Then construction including Lego
Pretend play eg toy shops n kitchens great when younger
I agree with previous posters pare back and rotate - I used to work in a play scheme and we used to keep a diary and rotate - the toys that hadn’t been seen for a while became much more interesting for a few weeks!

Indecisivelurcher · 12/03/2021 19:19

I'm in the same boat! I have noticed that mine play with what's visible / out. So I'm thinking to put at least a third of it away in boxes, probably in the loft. And then rotate things around regularly, so swap it over.

Ds is almost 4 and mostly plays with cards (like yoyo cards or snap) or random small items in a cooking bowl, playing smelly soup?! He also likes marble run at the mo. He never plays with all the hot wheels and imaginext he got for Christmas, all of which are huge...

Dd is 6, she mostly plays with baby dolls and bags, playing at going to school or sleepover at nans house (lucky me in the role of nan). The only other toys she plays with are small world particularly playmobil. She likes crafts.

Smeds · 12/03/2021 19:35

Mine are 3 and 5. We seem to have toys in boxes in every room! We don't have a playroom. I'll often rotate toys that are in their bedrooms and bring them downstairs for a while and visa versa. Lego, puzzles, loose parts and their toy kitchen are the most popular all the time. I drink a lot of pretend coffee given to me.
