To expect not to see spiders at this time of year?!

Three days ago I had to chase a medium sized house spider out of my home.

Yesterday I had to catch a huge, raft(?) spider in my hallway, lucky whatever it was was fairly slow moving.

Today, an enormous giant house spider ran up the curtain in the front room.

Why? I expect and get a few around September and October...but rarely this time of year! And these have been huge! AIBU to think that this is abnormal?!

I loathe spiders and can’t bear the idea that spider season isn’t just a few weeks in Autumn.

I vacuum at least 3-4 times a week. My house is very neat and clean, no boxes piled on the floor or any places for them to hide, no clutter. All clear surfaces and lots of space. Minimal.

Why are they doing this to me!

They come in around September, and go back out around March, so it’s usually twice a year they’re about in the house.

en0la · 12/03/2021 00:15

They are in houses all year round but if they don't have places to hide then you see them more. My house is old with lots of nooks and crannies so I never see them.

RefuseTheLies · 12/03/2021 00:17

We have noticed spiders in the house recently too. I hadn't realised they go back out around this time of year (although it makes total sense if there's a time of year they come in!)

Oh I do hope you’re right and theuy are trying to get out!

I’m freaked out now though! Where have they been hiding all this time Shock

And so it starts.

Envy not envy.

I fucking hate them.

en0la · 12/03/2021 10:49

Under beds, behind bookcases, in the corner of table legs, places like they.

FedNlanders · 12/03/2021 10:51

I hate them 😭

Somethingsnappy · 12/03/2021 11:45

I wonder if thecrecent stormy weather has unsettled them? But as a PP mentioned, some types of spider are in your house all the time. My house is very cluttered so we don't see them often but I know they're there!

If you don't like them, can you get on board with allowing the spindly legged cellar spiders (pholcidae) to remain? They don't move about much, just sit in a corner harmlessly. However, they do hunt house spiders, even those much bigger than themselves. Very useful in keeping the giant scary ones at bay!

ijokeijoke · 12/03/2021 11:46

This is not news I wanted to hear 😭😭😭

Pyewackect · 12/03/2021 11:49

I was thinking the same the other day coz there are loads in the stables.

Misspacorabanne · 12/03/2021 11:49

God I thought they died off in cold weather indoors or outdoors! Blush I didn't know they go out again in march! Back to checking under my pillows before I get into bed I guess! Grin

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 12/03/2021 11:52

I don't expect to see them any time of year if they know what's bloody good for them!

I agree with the PP, if you can tolerate the spindly legged ones, the big black scary ones won't come in so much, as they hunt them.

Peppermint smelling stuff helps as they don't like the smell. I have trebor munts scattered randomly around the house. Any brave enough to intrude get killed. I can't stand them, they terrify me.

Diesse · 12/03/2021 11:55

I live in woodland and I have lots at the moment.

JellyNo15 · 12/03/2021 12:02

I use Indoorex anti flea spray late summer and early spring. Rarely see a live spider. I have a huge phobia so this spray has made my life so much better.

honeyytoast · 12/03/2021 12:04

I can’t emotionally deal with this information

Emptybox · 12/03/2021 15:17

Spiders are bastards. FACT.
It’s a well known fact that they target the vulnerable as part of a housing scam. Basically, they move into your home and wander everywhere, leaping out of the wardrobe, running over your face at night, and beating you to the bathroom every time you want to have a soak. Eventually you are forced to move out, at which point they claim squatters’ rights, declare your house abandoned and sell it for a huge profit. They are actually responsible for driving up house prices in some areas.
Pure, pure evil.

murbblurb · 12/03/2021 15:18

If uk - excellent news, keeps flies down.

If Australia, less good news.

MyLittleOrangutan · 12/03/2021 15:23

We have mosquitos! Wtf is that about?!
I keep the spiders to keep the mosquitos at bay. They're like my cats.

ComDummings · 12/03/2021 15:28

Apparently you see them more in autumn because they’re trying to find a mate at that time of year. Horny wee bastards.

Jupitersmoon842 · 12/03/2021 15:33

Oh I’m panicking reading this, I spend September and October in such a state of high anxiety expecting to see one, I didn’t know it was March too Sad.
@JellyNo15 I might have to look into this flea spray!

ComDummings · 12/03/2021 15:36

Now I’ve read this thread I am going to see a spider at some point this weekend Shock it always happens if someone mentions spiders. Boom one will appear.

Branleuse · 12/03/2021 15:38

youll need to put a complaint in writing to the main spider boss. He will tell them to calm it down a bit till proper spider season in autumn

Somethingsnappy · 12/03/2021 17:05

At which time, they'll have been locked down for months and will go crazy in autumn!
BrownEyedGirl80 · 12/03/2021 17:18

Fuck me I hope I don't see any

Emptybox · 12/03/2021 18:20

For all my joking, I do hate them, and I’m not sure why- they are just sinister, I think. I’ll look at them in a tank, there was a black widow at Marwell Zoo about 15 years ago and it fascinated me. I cant have them running wild though. No way. There was a massive one in our garage in a house we lived in years ago. It lived in a hole in the wall. The hole was lined with web, and all you generally saw were a few legs that poked out. They were easily 2-3 feet long. It never worried me when I saw it’s legs- I just gave it a wide berth and put my motorbike on the other side of the garage. The big worry was when I couldn’t see it’s legs.
