Since when did "Mother's Day" arrive? It is Mothering Sunday surely? Yet another little gem we have to thank the Americans for I don't doubt!

Hmm
Redglitter · 11/03/2021 15:24

It's not a recent thing at all. We always called it Mothers Day. The only time i remember it being Mothering Sunday was at Sunday school

FullofCurryandparatha · 11/03/2021 15:25

Mothering Sunday was historically about going back to your Mother CHURCH, not about giving your mother a bunch of daffodils. Mothers day was invented in America around the early 20th century, when Mothering Sunday as a Christian tradition had died out.
They merged at some point, a long time ago

ellenpartridge · 11/03/2021 15:27

I'm in my mid 30s and have always known it as Mother's Day. It isn't new!

80sMum · 11/03/2021 15:28

Yes, I believe that the UK did adopt Mother's Day from the USA, along with Father's Day and Halloween.

All 3 are merely commercial money-making vehicles.

Prior to the American version of Mother's Day taking over, the UK festival day was Mothering Sunday, originally all about returning to the mother church but latterly also to celebrate motherhood.

At least the UK festival is still related to the church calendar and not some random day in May, like the US version.

My church as a child ( Episcopalian) made a big deal of Mothering Sunday and we had simnel cake then rather than Easter ; but every card I made at school was Mother’s Day.

I am late 50s , so not new at all.

Pinotwoman82 · 11/03/2021 15:36

Nope not new at all, always Mother’s Day

amylou8 · 11/03/2021 15:40

Mothering Sunday is the midpoint in the churches calendar during lent. Mothers day is a commercial event, intended to make you spend money on flowers, cards and chocolate.

Screwcorona · 11/03/2021 15:43

Always been mothers day 🤷‍♀️

Cocomarine · 11/03/2021 15:48

I’m 52. I vividly remember Mothering Sunday when I was under 10, in church.

Guess what? All the non church go-ers called it Mother’s Day back then, too.

Are you a Christian @percheron67 ?
I find it to be a Christian term, and actually find it more appropriate for those marking it as a secular day to use Mother’s Day.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 11/03/2021 15:49

Bloody Americans, coming over here with their new fangled words and forcing us to change our ways.

Curse them Hmm

GladysTheGroovyMule · 11/03/2021 15:52

I’ve only ever known it to be called Mothering Sunday at church literally everyone else calls it Mother’s Day. It might be an Americanism but seriously I don’t think it matters.

Aimee1987 · 11/03/2021 15:52

This. And I'm Irish but my DP will say the same about England.
WombatWomb · 11/03/2021 15:57

I'm 37 and it's always been Mother's Day.

Is Mothering Sunday a churchy thing?

Cocomarine · 11/03/2021 15:58

Well quite! Fucking Americans and their fucking American things coming over here.

We should refuse to engage. Lightbulbs, cars, films... they can take that culture-restoring crap right back, eh @percheron67 🤣

Cocomarine · 11/03/2021 16:03

*culture destroying

Blacktothepink · 11/03/2021 16:07

My Nan used to call it Mothering Sunday but my mum always referred to it as Mother’s Day, but I’m not sure when it started being called that.

Sandsnake · 11/03/2021 16:12

I quite like the thought of Mother’s Day in May. Nicer weather for it, and dissociates it with Easter completely. Christians can still celebrate Mothering Sunday if they want, I like the sound of a BBQ / picnic like Father’s Day rather than a boring roast.

baubled · 11/03/2021 18:37

Them bloody Americans, they're at it again

NoGoodPunsLeft · 11/03/2021 18:40

I thought mother's day was something to do with the pagans so is a real "thing" whereas father's day was invented by Hallmark

LittleRa · 11/03/2021 19:14

Mother’s Day is on a different day in North America. In May.

Carolina24 · 11/03/2021 19:28

I am in my thirties and it has been Mother’s Day for as long as I have been aware of it. I think you’re a little out of date Grin

Floralnomad · 11/03/2021 19:30

I’m mid 50s and it has always been Mother’s Day in our family .

Slub · 11/03/2021 19:32

Do you live under a rock?
It's always been Mother's Day and I'm mid 50's Confused
