To think it’s wanky to describe oneself as a foodie?

RosieGuacamosie · 10/03/2021 22:46

Grin

I mean I imagine 95% of the population like eating, and I imagine at least 85% like trying different foods.

What elevates a person to being a “foodie”?

Loves eating? Frozen food served less than twice per week? Sprinkle some FRESH basil on one’s pasta?

Paying £££££ for what's basically a snack maybe.

ATieLikeRichardGere · 10/03/2021 22:48

Posts too many food pictures on social media?

therocinante · 10/03/2021 22:49

Agreed. It's fucking food. Get over yourselves.

(Also, there's often a nasty - sometimes unintentional - classist vibe to it too. At uni I ate the food I was brought up on - oven food, and pasta and sauce, because we were skint and these were what my mum could afford and knew how to cook. The self-described 'foodie' in my halls thought this was hilarious and inferior, and when I'd never tried hummus or been to a seafood restaurant acted as though I had said I like cleaning the toilets with my toothbrush)

DukeOfEarlGrey · 10/03/2021 22:50

Yes, generally wanky people say this. I tend to get on better with the more common or garden ‘food lover’.

CanofCant · 10/03/2021 22:53

Massively wanky and pretentious. I agree it is also classist.

WishingHopingThinkingPraying · 10/03/2021 22:54

I'm a wankie foodie. I consider it an interest in food beyond eating. The vast majority of people are not that interested in food as a hobbie, cooking, presenting, exploring.

Ugh. I completely agree! Ironically the most sneery people I know like this think an over cooked lobster is fantastic and have no real concept of different flavours.

I love how Mumsnet members just love to indulge in a bit of hatrid🥰

There is a thread asking how people can be slim if they like food,

and quite a few replies explaining that people are slim BECAUSE they like good food.

Giving yourself an etiquette is never a good look, but there are foodies around. You just have to look at the content of some supermarket trolleys and queues in front of junk food shop to see that many people are anything but foodie.

Not sure it's necessary to be offended about it?

WorraLiberty · 10/03/2021 22:56

Foodie, gourmet, connoisseur.

All wankery at its finest.

With respect I think most people are, to some degree interested in cooking.

What do you class as “presenting” and “exploring”?

Food is very much my thing, reading about it, preparing it, shopping for it, cooking it and yes eating it. I have never and will never call myself a "foodie" I have often been heard to say (as above) food is my thing though... Confused

ThatsNotTheTeaHunty · 10/03/2021 22:58

I've always seen it as someone who is interested in cooking, passionate about good food etc.
I'm just a proud scoffer.

RampantIvy · 10/03/2021 22:59

I'm greedy Grin

I admit to calling myself a bit of a foodie in that I enjoy all sorts of foods and different cuisines. I have never eaten in a Michelin star restaurant, or any high end restaurant for that matter, but to me food is something to be enjoyed. I live to eat. I don't eat to live.

DebbieGetsTheJobDone · 10/03/2021 22:59

95% of the population like eating,

that has nothing to do with being a "foodie".
Or even trying different food.

You just need to look at the food places who are thriving to see that maybe half the population has no interest in good food. So what?

Do people feel judged or offended too if they are not genuinely interested in good wines? Some people chose the wine based on price. Who cares.

Hexinthecity · 10/03/2021 22:59

Not as wanky as saying oneself op 😂 #lighthearted (before I get humped on)

RampantIvy · 10/03/2021 22:59

And I'm addicted to watching cookery shows and cooking videos.

Hexinthecity · 10/03/2021 23:00

I’m not sure I buy that.

If I decided to make a chateaubriand and triple beef fat cooked chips with peppercorn cream sauce every night I’m sure I’d be just as fat if I ate an industrial size bag of oven chips with tomato sauce Grin

Definitely not as wanky Wink

There's more to being a foodie than just liking food and eating. It's not a posh thing at all, it's just another interest, like gardening, or photography. I don't know why you seem to find it annoying, OP?

Sparklesocks · 10/03/2021 23:05

I have a friend I’d consider a ‘foodie’. I like my food but the difference is she actively has food as an interest - she seeks out international supermarkets to get niche ingredients for cooking, subscribes to newsletters and food blogs/food instagrams, saves up cash to do things like pasta making or butchery classes or those fancy dinners where you get 25 courses, plans all her holidays around the food, travels somewhat long distances to certain cafes/restaurants to try certain dishes she’s heard a lot of buzz about, tries anything and everything at least once.

But she’s not wanky about it, she loves a Big Mac or a jam sandwich as much as she loves whatever obscure dish she’s tracked down in a small takeaway in north London. It’s just that she enjoys food in a way that it’s a hobby. I guess there’s a difference between foodies in that sense, and just outright food snobs.

What is “good food” though?

In normal times I often go to Michelin star restaurants, yet can often be found in Toby carvery if I’m hungover 🤷🏻‍♀️. Both are good in different ways.

I love watching videos, exploring Provence of food, cooking. Savouring a Tiny morsal as I can't eat much 🥺. I say I'm a foodie but not in a snobby term

lanbro · 10/03/2021 23:11

I love foodies, they buy my cakes, photograph them, post about them and generate more interest...I know quite a few, they are generally not wanky, they enjoy sharing their finds and I'd rather follow a foodie than a selfie lover any day
