Hi all, I posted a few weeks ago asking how low you had to feel to try anti-depressants.

I received some really lovely and supportive replies which helped me take the first step to speaking to my GP. I started on Citalopram a few weeks ago (10mg then 20mg) and have already noticed a real beneficial difference - I feel less flat, I'm less quick to temper, have much more patience with my children, and I've even got some of my old quick wit back!

I just wanted to say a really big thank you xxx

So glad you feel more like yourself again. Citalopram really helped my anxiety too.

TeenMinusTests · 09/03/2021 10:41

Super. Smile

Merryoldgoat · 09/03/2021 10:50

Fantastic news.

I came here first when I felt low after my baby and the help was invaluable.

So glad you’re on the road to recovery OP.

That's the best thing I've heard all week, so glad you are on the mend.

That's fabulousGrin

Piffle11 · 09/03/2021 19:53

Ah that’s great. Citalopram got me through a really tough phase 15 or so years ago. Taking that first step to go and talk about medication with a GP can be tough ... well done x

MaidEdithofAragon · 09/03/2021 19:58

That's really good news. Take care of yourself.

Zerrin13 · 09/03/2021 21:37

So pleased you are feeling better

IndecentFeminist · 09/03/2021 21:38

Amazing. Well done. Life changing here too.

Orchidflower1 · 09/03/2021 21:40

So glad you’re improving. Thank you for sharing lovely news. 💐

HarryPottersBawbag · 09/03/2021 21:41

thats lovely to hear. I'm on citalopram, have been for 7 odd years and likely for life. They really do help you feel like yourself!
That first step is the biggest hurdle, well done for leaping it!

NiceGerbil · 09/03/2021 21:41

Great news Smile

Okbussitout · 09/03/2021 21:42

Great. I can't remember if I commented. I'm on citalopram so tend to comment on posts about it.

I wiated far to long before taking citalopram. I think I thought it would change me loads. But it's not mind altering like that!

So pleased you're doing better. But don't beat yourself up if you have difficult days!

postcardfromme · 09/03/2021 21:42

Well done!! Hope things keep getting better and better for you Thanks

Germolenequeen · 09/03/2021 21:46

Hi

Really pleased for you 💓 I've been on escitalopram for 10 years - anxiety depression &
OCD - have no intention of coming off them - medication is medication whether for physical or psychological issues should not matter💐

famousforwrongreason · 09/03/2021 21:47

This is lovely to read. I started them recently and I can honestly say that my life is transformed. I wish I'd taken them years ago!

BlackGoldSun · 09/03/2021 21:54

I took a screenshot of one of the supportive comments on your thread, still waiting to approach my GP but you have spurred me on a bit more @Walkerby,
so pleased things are improving for you.

I've been struggling for years, had private CBT and other therapies, the safety behaviours and avoidance strategies on a daily basis for over a decade have really worn me down.
The extremes I go to, to hold down my job and appear that I've got my shit together, are exhausting.
It's been a bit easier in lockdown in some respects but only because I've retreated further.
I have a few physical issues and always feel like I've reached my quota with my GP although I'm not a frequent attender.

I have no energy left for much else.
I need to do what you've done. Well done OP - for seeking help and for getting some of your wit back. And for giving me and maybe some others a nudge.

soyabean · 09/03/2021 22:05

So glad you are feeling better. It works for me too. I would have struggled so badly last year without it, but in fact have coped fine. Such a relief!

Walkerby · 10/03/2021 10:33

Thank you so much, all!

@BlackGoldSun, I'm sorry for what you're going through and am really glad my experience might help a bit with your thoughts. It certainly seems that you've tried lots of other avenues. Like @Okbussitout says, I worried that it would be a 'fake' happiness or a 'fake' me, but from what I understand these types of anti-depressants simply help you retain more of your natural seratonin, bringing it back to a good balance rather than 'adding' anything. The imbalance happens because for whatever reason, like prolonged stress etc, your brain gets rid of too much seratonin. (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong!). So the anti-d's actually help you to feel yourself again, you in better days before the imbalance, rather than a different you.

I was scared of them before taking them, now I wish I hadn't taken so long. They've helped bring a calm and balance to my life. I'm not skipping around feeling fake happy, I just feel a lot better and able to cope a lot better with everything.

Sending thanks again to everyone for your support and kindness and hugs to all who need one xxx
