Car seat

DH measured DS8 at the weekend. 135cm. They were both elated. Car seat got taken to the tip and ceremoniously dumped in a skip on Sunday.

DS has just asked me to measure him again. He isb130cm tall. 131 at a push.

WIBU to insist we buy him another car seat?

DH, by the way, is an Engineer and measures things very precisely on a daily basis.

DD is 143cm tall and probably weighs about 5 stone. Technically she should be in a carseat due to weight and height. I don't think she'd be impressed with me if I bought her one seeing as she's 21.

HallowedGround · 08/03/2021 19:55

@Sirzy seat belts are made with the male body as typical so many women find them uncomfortable due to average male height difference.

@FTEngineerM

So, short adults < 150cm tall have to have booster seats? In some EU countries?
This made me laugh. I'm in my 30s and only 155cm 🤣🤣
FTEngineerM · 08/03/2021 20:51

@YeahYeahThatsMoi I had a fright! I’m probably this after a day or two slouching at the pc. Thinking of all the laws I’d inadvertently broken 😂🤭

@AWhisperWillDoIfThatsAllYouCan sorry I'd always been told at 135cm in a car seat the seat belt wouldn't sit correctly. I've just googled it and seen a lot say up to 150cm, although can't imagine a 12 year old (average height of a 12 year old boy being just short of 149cm) being in a full on car seat 🙈. Not had to think about it before but thank you for informing me!

We have a backless booster for holidays.

Already scoping out a new seat. Thankfully he's barely in the car at the moment due to lockdown restrictions. We cycle to school. His holiday booster will do until the new one arrives.

DH is feeling like quite the twat now!

@Scarling oh bless him haha. I'd bet your son "stretched" 😂. My almost 6 year old is desperate to get on the good rollercoasters so I get it....

BertieBotts · 09/03/2021 08:57

It's hardly a "full on car seat" though by the time they're in one like this. It's just a guide for the belt.

But a backless booster is also perfectly fine for children over about 7.

User334567 · 09/03/2021 10:47

I wouldn’t put an 8 year old in a car seat its ott can’t you just get a small booster

Sirzy · 09/03/2021 10:53

Wanting to keep a child safe in a car is OTT?

A booster cushion is safer than nothing but a high back booster is safer than a booster cushion.

lanthanum · 09/03/2021 10:58

Booster cushion will do. And don't bin it when he does get to 135cm; there will presumably eventually come a day when you can give other people's children lifts again, and it helps to have a booster seat then. We kept ours for a long time after DD was tall enough, because one or two of her friends were much smaller. It's embarrassing enough being the one who still needs it, without having to make arrangements to bring your own.

And as others have said, they don't have to stop using it at 135cm; we carried on using it for longer when DD was in the front seat, as it did position her better.
