Should Argos give me a better laptop?

I’m really not sure if IABU. I bought an Acer Aspire 3 laptop for DD to do her homeschooling. I bought it online from Argos. She is unable to return to school for the foreseeable future so the laptop is really important.

Anyway, it doesn’t work. I spoke to Acer and they carried out a diagnostic test and found that the hard drive was faulty. They told me to return it to Argos and they will replace it.

So I spoke to Argos but the laptop is out of stock. As I have NO spare money I asked if they could swap it for another model, but they only one they have is £49 more expensive.

I asked if I could swap it for this one since Acer will reimburse them, but they’ve said no. So we’re stuck with the broken one. We don’t have any other devices so homeschooling is out for now.

AIBU? Or should Argos just send me what they have available? I am fully prepared to accept the results of the vote Grin.

Thanks.

Can you take it back to an Argos store? Refunds tend to be much quicker that way. Still a couple of days to go back on a card, but ,ugh quicker than posting.

There's a blogger on Instagram who had a very similar problem with Argos recently - search for Justalittlebuild - the story is probably still in her feed and details of how it got sorted in the end

Would you take a pair of damaged primark shoes back and demand you deserve a pair of louboutins instead?

Nellythemouse · 08/03/2021 14:55

If you phoned your school office they’d probably have something you could borrow by tomorrow. Speak to your school.

daisyjgrey · 08/03/2021 15:00

Your school will have devices to loan out to cover the time she is without a computer. You're going to need to be more pragmatic.

@CuriousaboutSamphire PPs aren't saying Argos shouldn’t issue a refund, they’re saying OP can’t expect Argos to provide a laptop which is more expensive than the one she originally purchased, which would leave them £49 out of pocket.

Argos are willing to refund the faulty laptop, but OP is unhappy with the time it will take for the refund to be processed (which is a standard amount of time)

CallMeCleo · 08/03/2021 15:07

You are entitled to a refund.

Use that money to buy another elsewhere.

I suggest you buy a secondhand one as you will get a betterspec for the same money.

I bought a Sony Vaio 17 inch for £120 on Ebay.

allmycats · 08/03/2021 15:10

Is there a reason you can't take it to your nearest store, along with proof of purchase and exchange it for a cheaper model. Or, have it refunded back on to your card at the same time. Otherwise you need to send it back ASAP.

I've read my post back. I seem to have deleted the first sentence that said something much like that.

I'm on my phone and the MN App is stop starting really oddly.

My apologies, for this and any other post that makes no sense 😊

@MarieFromStTropez

They can give us a refund, but it will take too long. It will be 5-10 working days AFTER they receive it. Add on post time that could be nearly 3 weeks.
Ok but then it would be the same issue if they swapped the laptop for you, if you have to post it in. Can't you take it back to Argos yourself? Any shop would have this policy with returns, you get it processed in so many business days, but hopefully it's sooner. If they won't exchange just quickly get on with getting the refund so you can get a new one. And don't buy from Argos again
