So i got made redundant last month its really got me down applied for lots of jobs but still have redundancy left to see me around 4 months
I applied for a job and got an interview 2 weeks ago but my gut told me it wasnt for me so i didnt pursue it (my confidence is shot anyway but I think im being too fussy atm but i have another month or so financially to concentrate on something i want)
Anyway so i got a call friday about an interview for this week.
I have looked into the company and i am worried the reviews for the staff are awful on glassdoor there are only 4 reviews all rating the company one...now this could be one person with vendetta or 4 authentic reviews all saying the wages are never correct, they dont treat the staff decently etc
Now im not sure if its my confidence and i am worried and picking through excuses because no where will be like my last few work places (nice small businesses decent managers etc) or if this is a big red flag.

Im struggling with what to do.

Aibu - stop looking into all these things and just go and take a chance and hope they pay correctly etc

Ainbu- use the reviews and not waste my time etc and risk not being paid.

Thanks in advance

I'd do the interview and see what kind of feel you get from them.

Frickssake · 08/03/2021 12:49

Go to the interview

Aprilx · 08/03/2021 12:51

I would be inclined to think that Glassdoor reviews would be weighted towards those that have an axe to grind. I’d make my own mind up.

LIZS · 08/03/2021 12:53

Agree, probably like tripadvisor. The disgruntled are more likely to post.

DynamoKev · 08/03/2021 12:57

A place I used to work has loads of shit glassdoor reviews - all justified.
They demand current staff write positive reviews which the marketing department posts from time to time to boost their poor score.
Asking them at the interview about the reviews may be revealing.

HeyDemonsItsYaGirl · 08/03/2021 12:58

Go. I looked at my employer's Glassdoor recently and saw three 1*s in a row from the guy who was fired for stalking and sexually harrassing a woman in my team. I could tell it was him from the style of writing, but a casual reader wouldn't have known.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 08/03/2021 12:59

Having said that the Glassdoor reviews of my last employer are routinely poor, even from those who say they liked working there. Everyone can see what is wrong, how it fails so many staff with it's "everyone is replaceable" ethos.

But it is a very desirable opportunity for many. So the attitude doesn't hurt them.

Hoppinggreen · 08/03/2021 13:00

Go to interviews
You can decide whether you want the job or not once it’s offered to you

Mintjulia · 08/03/2021 13:01

Go along, you should be able to make your own judgement from the attitude of the he person and your prospective supervisor.

You can always say that it's not for you, at a later stage.

gwenneh · 08/03/2021 13:21

Definitely go. As many have pointed out, the disgruntled are the most likely to post. You can always ask questions of your interviewer and see how it lands -- I like to ask what they like about working there.

I happen to work for an amazing company with a poor Glassdoor review or two, all of which are from people who were justifiably fired or left in poor circumstances.

Scubadivinginabox · 08/03/2021 13:23

No smoke without fire. I was in the same position as you with very little confidence in my skills. Got a staff job that paid very well but a week in I realised I had rushed into it because it paid well and I had made a horrible mistake. Resigned and am now taking the time to find the right job for me. Be discerning. Trust your instincts. Don't waste your time on a job that doesn't feel right.

Reinventinganna · 08/03/2021 13:26

You’ve got nothing to lose by going.
You can ask questions while there and could use it as practice to improve your confidence.

Is your industry competitive and do you have anything that makes you stand out above others?

HappyTodayForNow · 08/03/2021 21:50

Thank you all for your advice i am going to go tomorrow and see what its like there is quite a long procedure anyway if i got the job i think the stress of everything is just a bit much atm and your words really helped me. I might not even get the job but after no interview for many years the experience is needed anyway and will hopefully give me a boost going forward no matter what the outcome is!

Go with your gut. I had a job years ago where I read the job description and immediately thought ‘God that looks dull’ However, it was more money and I went for it. My gut reaction was right. It was dull, the management was toxic and it was the worst year of my life. If you’re not sure then keep looking.
