Do you feel appropriately paid for your work?

Do you feel that your wages fairly reflect your skills and labour?

I'm just curious how people generally feel after chatting with my own colleagues a few days ago. They were complaining that we're underpaid and that they will struggle to live on these wages as they get older and want to start families etc. We're all nurses on a public payscale so on the same or similar pay (working in Ireland where nurses are better paid than in the UK). I felt really surprised as I consider myself well paid for doing a job that I love, probably more than many of my friends in other professions.

Are you happy with your wage in relation to what you contribute to your employer or do you think you're worth more?

Not really, and my boss agrees, but sadly it's public sector so there is no flexibility. But I love the job so that makes up for it.

RampantIvy · 06/03/2021 22:32

No. I know my manager thinks I am worth more, but times are tough right now.

1FootInTheRave · 06/03/2021 22:33

No.

Nhs midwife.

MadHattersTeaPartee · 06/03/2021 22:37

I do feel like I am paid fairly and appropriately for the role I do and the responsibility I have. I am 40 though and this is really the first job I have had where I have felt this way.

ilovesooty · 06/03/2021 22:40

I loved my last job but at the end felt financially under rewarded for what I did. I left to become fully self employed.

harknesswitch · 06/03/2021 22:40

Yes, I love my job and feel I get paid very well

PPNC · 06/03/2021 22:42

Yes, though it’s public body so I respect the restrictions plus the benefits that brings (very underrated what benefits being public sector gives!

If I was corporate side still I would consider myself underpaid.

MuddyWalks · 06/03/2021 22:43

Nope. TA

jjjnnnnnrrssss · 06/03/2021 22:44

I think I make a good salary, but I work in tech for a web company. They tend to pay well, much higher than average, and I live in London (again, higher bump).

I think there are many, many careers in this country that are severely underpaid. And in general I think the average pay in this country is too low for the cost of living.

Chimeraforce · 06/03/2021 22:45

Does anybody? It's all relative. Everyone wants more especially when we compare.

JaceLancs · 06/03/2021 22:45

I’m vastly underpaid (voluntary sector) even my boss agrees
Sadly difficult times all round and if there’s not the funding out there!
I do 15-20 hours a week unpaid already but can’t let down the vulnerable people we support

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 06/03/2021 22:45

Yes. Social worker in Denmark where the trade unions still have some clout. Love my job.

DrDreReturns · 06/03/2021 22:45

Yes. Computer programmer in the private sector. I felt underpaid when I worked in the public sector though.

DrMaryMalone · 06/03/2021 22:46

Not particularly. My pay is probably fair for my level of experience but not for the responsibility and amount of unpaid overtime- think 50-60 hours a week on a 37.5 hour contract for about 50% of the year. There are other benefits but they don’t make up for it.

Dee03 · 06/03/2021 22:46

No
Carer in a care home working nights

huggzy · 06/03/2021 22:47

Definitely not.

I'm a nursery nurse.

magicfarawayme · 06/03/2021 22:48

Public sector. Education welfare officer. No, we haven't had a pay rise in ten years. It translates to a very noticeable pay cut in real terms. It's great that my husband works in the private sector so that I can actually afford to continue doing the job. There are more deserving jobs than us also not getting a pay rise but.... what would the impact be no one did anything about kids not going to school?

1Morewineplease · 06/03/2021 22:49

No... I'm a TA. I earn £8000 pa.

Cisonostatibellagiorni · 06/03/2021 22:49

I think I shod get extra for the hours I work (late shift) but we get paid the same as the morning team. I also look after some very precious stuff so I think that should carry more of a premium than it does.... But the work itself is pretty easy and we get some decent perks. I wish we could get overtime or earn a bonus somehow.

Hankunamatata · 06/03/2021 22:50

Yes I think my pay is fine. NHS worker (decent pension and holidays).

I'm totally embarrassed about people hammering on about 1% payrise and talk of industrial action. There are so many people out there who dont have jobs and being made homeless.

Cisonostatibellagiorni · 06/03/2021 22:50

Shod = should Hmm

HeyDemonsItsYaGirl · 06/03/2021 22:50

Yes, I do. Although I've been 'acting up' in my ex-boss's role since she retired, and now I want to formalise it with a pay rise and title change. But my salary is at the top of the range for the my official job title.

Hankunamatata · 06/03/2021 22:52

@1Morewineplease is that pro rata?

idontlikealdi · 06/03/2021 22:54

Yes I do but I know the equivalent men are in 10-15k more

mrstnov13 · 06/03/2021 22:54

No.
I'm a nursery practitioner.
I love my job but think the amount of responsibility I have and the level of professionalism given to parents and multi agency teams, isn't reflected in my wage.
