In response to another thread, I just want to ask if you've ever owned a cat that has had a litter of kittens?
Interested to see how many people have..

Yes, currently expecting, but she is getting neutered after this one. I don't see anything wrong with allowing a cat to have one or two litters in her life - all of ours will go to best homes possible. Given away, not sold for £££, despite mum being a pure breed. Kittens are magical, and a great experience for the children too.

fostered moms and kittens for a rescue loved it watching the kittens get older and bolder ( usually half way up the curtains) at twelve weeks the kittens and moms go to the vets for spaying chipping and first vacs before going back to the rescue for homing its very rewarding fostering as they are in your house for a few weeks , have also fostered feral hissy spitty kittens and returned purry friendly babies to the rescue that is great turning them into friendly for the rest of thier lives cats

I’ve lived with cats for most of my life & never had kittens born to any of them, we have been scrupulous about spaying them. However I did work on a farm where a very young cat had kittens because they put off spaying her due to cost. Sad

I hope you know who you’re giving them to, else they could have a very unpleasant end.
Stellaris22 · 06/03/2021 22:33

Do you really need to put an animal through a traumatic and needless pregnancy just so your kids can have a 'magical experience'?

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 06/03/2021 23:04

No. Because, much as I adore kittens, I'm a responsible pet owner and get them spayed.

The people who don't might say 'oh, she got out' but it's not hard to spot a cat on heat and get them done within the next week or two if you've been too slack to book it beforehand. If the cat is anything more than 4 months old, the odds are they know full well because they've been through the noise and writhing and calling plenty of times and are waiting for the time to have the accidental litter and resulting sale of kittens.

winniesanderson · 06/03/2021 23:11

Yes. We were told our cat was a neutered boy. She wasn't. My fault really for being so naive. Now I know that at the age we got her of course she wouldn't have been bloody spayed. She was neutered as soon as possible after. And had a bit of a name adjustment too. She did extremely well but I wouldn't have chosen for it to happen.

majestypalm · 06/03/2021 23:11

that’s just what the world needs, more kittens Angry

ffs, grow up and be responsible

FireflyRainbow · 06/03/2021 23:17

Yes. My cats 14 now but she had 1 litter and they went to my mum, siblings and friend.

ZoobyZoobyDoo · 06/03/2021 23:19

Yes. It is actually necessary for at least some cats to reproduce in order for the species to survive.

ZoobyZoobyDoo · 06/03/2021 23:20

There seem to be lots of people on this thread having kittens right now.

whenwillthemadnessend · 06/03/2021 23:22

No but I have had two human babies Grin

Mypathtriedtokillme · 06/03/2021 23:27

Only when I was a kid.
She gave birth to her kittens in my sisters bed which was both gross and fascinating.

She was spayed not long after her kittens weened (we kept one and the rest were given to good homes).
Kittens were all Scottish folds which was unexpected.

indemMUND · 06/03/2021 23:30

Dsis let her brand new young female kitten out. Boom, pregnant. Guess who was called when she went into labour? Spent hours watching and waiting from a distance. One kitten came out just fine. Next was stillborn and I tried to revive it for ages. Third came out struggling. I helped and he was fine. I was asked to take the stillborn with me when I left late that night. Buried it in my garden. I ended up taking on the last born and he's two now. Dsis gave away both Mum and the first born she'd kept as it was the "cutest" after a few weeks. Love my boy to bits but still angry about the whole situation.

Me neither in principle but most people aren’t nearly as responsible as you.

Oh for fucks sake they are so far away from being endangered - don't be so bloody ridiculous

oh well as long as your children get to experience the ‘magic’ 🙄
forinborin · 06/03/2021 23:41

@TheCrowening
Eh... yes, of course, all will go to good friends' and family, the problem actually is that I will have to refuse some of them and I need to choose who. Why should they have an unpleasant end?

Mylittlesandwich · 06/03/2021 23:42

No, no kittens. Honestly I find kittens a right pain. Love my cats though.

Why do you think that my cat's pregnancy is traumatic? I also had a traumatic pregnancy myself, I wouldn't say unnecessary though. Motherhood is a part of life, for humans, for cats. As long as it is responsible, I don't see anything inherently wrong with it.
forinborin · 06/03/2021 23:46

Yes, it's great!

IhaveNotBroughtMySpecsWithMe · 06/03/2021 23:50

No. I've had 3 females and 1 male. No kittens.

like7 · 06/03/2021 23:51

Yes, twice, when I was a teenager. We had our first cat from a neighbour and she had 4 kittens and we kept one and easily found homes for the other 3 - never crossed our minds to sell them. Then the kitten we had also had one lot of kittens because we knew we would be able to find homes for them too. She had 3. They were both spayed after they had their kittens. It was one of my best experiences of growing up, although there wasn't much on in the 70's!

Quit4me · 07/03/2021 00:05

Why is a cat having kittens traumatic? (Unless very young) What an odd thing to say? The vast majority of cats give birth without incident to the mother, although obviously not all of the kitten often survive.
It’s almost impossible to home a kitten from a rescue place at the moment. There are very few available and 100’s waiting. You could be on the waiting list for years round here.
Even charging £500+ For a moggie, there are dozens of people wanting to adopt each one.

I am considering letting my cat have one litter and if I do I already have 3 trusted friends would would love to home a kitten. If there are so many kittens then why are hundreds of people with good homes struggling to home one?
