AIBU to ask about a payment plan ?

I have seen a painting I love in a gallery , it is more money than I can lay my hands on ( about £1,000 ) , would it be worth asking if I could pay in installments ?

YABU - peasants can't afford real art, go to Ikea and buy a poster.

YANBU - the nice people at the gallery will be happy to take installments, in the hope you become addicted to buying art Wink

The art sector is struggling quite a lot as it is. Asking won't hurt anyone :)

WoolieLiberal · 06/03/2021 20:28

There’s no harm in asking.

Sometimes you see a picture that just speaks to you in the way that nothing else can.

sbhydrogen · 06/03/2021 20:29

Definitely ask! My local gallery accepts payment in installments.

Enjoy the art on your wall!

Mummybunny2000 · 06/03/2021 20:30

@frumpety if you don’t ask you don’t get! You might as well ask them and if they say no then you haven’t lost anything. However .. £1000 is a lot of money you must really love it

AwkwardPaws27 · 06/03/2021 20:31

No harm in asking, but they may decline. What about a 0% credit card (if they accept credit cards, that is?).

DynamoKev · 06/03/2021 20:31

Why not get a 0% credit card and pay with that?

swampytiggaa · 06/03/2021 20:31

Worth an ask. Our local gallery promotes instalments. Can’t imagine it’s that unusual

icelollycraving · 06/03/2021 20:32

Galleries near work take payments. That includes more expensive works. Worth a try!

YesItsAPeacock · 06/03/2021 20:32

I bought art from a gallery in installments - there’s a specific art buying 0% finance scheme for exactly this purpose. I can’t remember what it’s called but the gallery might offer it.

YesItsAPeacock · 06/03/2021 20:33

This was it: www.ownart.org.uk/

RandomMess · 06/03/2021 20:34

I fell in love with a £16k sculpture they accepted instalments/interest free payments.

However I think it would have resulted in divorce 😭

FelicityBeedle · 06/03/2021 20:35

Some individual artists offer it too, or will hold it for a few months

frumpety · 06/03/2021 20:35

Thank you for saying this ^ , I did wonder if I had taken leave of my senses !

There's a scheme called own art which lots of galleries offer to make buying art affordable. So it's worth asking. I work for a gallery but not a commercial one, but I think it's fine to ask.

Is it mainly a selling gallery?

Reinventinganna · 06/03/2021 20:39

Most galleries will hold for a deposit.

If you know the artist it is also worth looking to see if they sell independently as galleries will take a large commission (usually anywhere between 20 to 50%).

1Morewineplease · 06/03/2021 20:40

They may well offer instalments but you may have to wait until your last instalment was paid
Please offer what you can. It will be worth it.

frumpety · 06/03/2021 20:45

@Okbussitout I think it is a selling gallery, they have some amazing art and this is in their lower end price range.

frumpety · 06/03/2021 20:48

@Reinventinganna its an older piece by the artist ( looked online and they are still working ) , so I think the gallery own it outright.

frumpety · 06/03/2021 20:53

@1Morewineplease I am happy to pay in installments and then get the piece, I could pay a decent deposit and then pay the rest over 6 months or pay over 10 months , not sure what is best to offer ?
