I will leave on the voting but I'm not being unreasonable

My nail is an arsehole and gives me grief on a daily basis and has done for several years.

Look at this swine. It spilts down the side and does it constantly. I'm always cutting and filling it back thinking it's damage.

But how I realise I have No Hope.

Because the a mother fucking line ridge type thing that's feeding it!

Split and fucked nails hurt and it appears that I'm destined to this for life??
What the fuck?

Please do get an MOT at the docs when you can - ridges can indicate a lot of issues. I had deep horizontal ones for years (Beau lines, I think?), just ignored them then one day, saw the new GP at the surgery for something unrelated. She asked for a closer look at my hands and told me she thought I had rheumatoid arthritis. Sent me to the hospital, lo and behold, I did. They might just indicate you are deficient in something though so please don't worry.

I've got this JML 'Bare Nails' thing and it does a fabulous job on the ridges. Admittedly, it's like an orbital sander for nails but used sparingly, it keeps the lines at bay. Essence at Wilko also do a great ridge filler.

I think it's permanant damage to the nail bed. You might have hurt it a long time ago and dont even remember.

I had something similar. The answer was to keep that nail very very short and gently file it the minute I could see the white part of the nail. After a year or two it was less likely to split. I keep it short ish but not as short as it could be.

bananamonkey · 05/03/2021 21:59

It can be if the split goes down too far. I used to have gel nails a lot which help because it doesn’t break underneath.

Also sometimes the nail tech glued it with mesh. Not a permanent solution though Sad

Any random changes like that should be checked out, its usually benign and easily fixed but its best to be on the safe side.

I believe iron deficiency can cause this. I have it on my little toe every now and then. It takes ages for it to grow out.

Ah.

I'm nearly always iron deficient thanks to my horrific periods.

Try taking some Calci-D tablets.

I'm also still breast feeding a 2 year old, and have been breast feeding for 7 years combined, 3 of which I was dairy free.

Best start boshing some vitamins!

Thanks all.

I shut my left ring finger in the car door & damaged the nail bed so I have this too.

LabiaMinoraPissusFlapus · 06/03/2021 12:33

I had this on my toe nail and kept it short, and applied a protective polish (?)- you can buy one and it just goes on the end of the nail and the split, to stop it catching. It did work.
