Minced beef left out over night

This is my first AIBU, I'm tentatively asking if I am being AIBU.

Last night DH cooked minced beef to go in a burrito. He put the leftovers in a tub in the microwave.

This afternoon, I came across the tub in the microwave as the outside of the tub felt a bit warm and I as I'm too busy to be poisoned, I threw the contents away.

DH is annoyed with me as apparently the microwave will have kept the minced meat safe to eat with it being slightly insulated. He said it would be fine as in the Victorian era people would have left food on the side or in a pot over the fire and it would have been fine. I have pointed out that this is not the same thing as what he has done.

AIBU?

I might have eaten it, DH definitely would have eaten it.

DingDongDenny · 05/03/2021 19:37

Also, for people saying if it smells ok, its fine to eat - not all bacteria smells. For example, one of the most common causes of food poisoning is rice and it doesn't smell when its bad

VestaTilley · 05/03/2021 19:37

YABU. It would’ve been fine, and throwing it away was wasteful. As long as it had been reheated thoroughly it would have been alright.

amylou8 · 05/03/2021 19:38

I'd have eaten it if it had only been left overnight. Nuke it in the microwave first.

Oblomov21 · 05/03/2021 19:41

I wouldn't have thrown away Dh's leftovers. It sounds fine to me. I would have eaten it.

SnackSizeRaisin · 05/03/2021 19:42

We leave pretty much everything out overnight and then fridge the next day. Sometimes leave out 2 or 3 days. Never had food poisoning. I don't think cooked beef is high risk really - the riskiest things are undercooked chicken, cooked rice, salad, premade fresh foods like shop bought sandwiches.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 05/03/2021 19:50

@Standrewsschool

I quite often cook mince in the evening, and leave it in the saucepan overnight as it’s too warm to put in the fridge or freezer. I’m still here!
Of course all the others (and there may have been many) who died as a result of doing the same as you aren't here to warn us... Hmm
TotoAnnihiliation · 05/03/2021 19:57

Thank you for all the replies. Having read through the responses, most of you wouldn't go near it. Others, think I was wasteful binning it.

In the future instead of binning it, he can eat his prepared food poisoning, I'll eat something else.

No and a read of food safety would tell you no also, why risk your health for a bit of mince .
If your dh wanted it should of put in fridge last night

BaggoMcoys · 05/03/2021 20:00

I'd have eaten it. Maybe I have a strong stomach but I do things like this all the time and have never had any problems.

SplendidSuns1000 · 05/03/2021 20:01

I'd have binned it too. It's not worth getting ill over.

DavidsSchitt · 05/03/2021 20:03

It would've been fine

VerityWibbleWobble · 05/03/2021 20:04

I'd have eaten it but I've got a cast iron stomach and I detest waste.

Etulosba · 05/03/2021 20:32

In reality, most people have the common sense to not eat meat left out on the worktop overnight. It's batshit.

I grew up in an era when a lot of people didn't own a fridge. Meat left out overnight won't do you any harm if you cook meat before you eat it.

Most people do.

AdaFuckingShelby · 05/03/2021 20:34

I often leave chilli out of the fridge overnight. Improves the flavour. No biggie at all.

Oblomov21 · 05/03/2021 21:10

Doesn't everyone leave mince covered overnight on top of the cooker?
I do. Spag Bol, curry, chilli, anything I cook gets left. Stews. Tastes even better the next day.

Jayne35 · 05/03/2021 21:35

I often forget to put things in the fridge after leaving them to cool, particularly bolognaise and we always still reheat and eat it.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 05/03/2021 22:37

Sounds fine to me. I'd have eaten it.

PorcelainCatStack · 05/03/2021 22:43

After having severe food poisoning from mince, no way. Because if it’s greater overall surface area there is more chance of bacteria. Especially if it was dodgy temp!

Ragwort · 05/03/2021 22:44

People mumsnetters are neurotic about food poisoning- how could it have 'felt warm'? Years ago none of us had fridges yet didn't get food poisoning all the time Hmm. Just use your common sense.

DenisetheMenace · 05/03/2021 22:45

If you had heated it thoroughly, to piping hot, as they say, would have been fine.

VladmirsPoutine · 05/03/2021 22:48

If you are also the type to not wash chicken & other meat products then yabu.

Shnuffles · 05/03/2021 22:50

I would've tossed it and been annoyed at whoever left it out, even if that meant kicking myself repeatedly. It's just not worth risking it, imo. I'd rather waste a little food on the rare occasion that someone makes a mistake than risk my health. Besides, what with worrying about whether or not it was safe, I'd have no appetite for it.

However, since he's not bothered, if it ever happens again, I'd leave it for him to eat (and not take a bite of it myself).

Strugglingtodomybest · 05/03/2021 22:55

I wouldn't have binned it.

Userg1234 · 05/03/2021 23:22

Reading the replies to this post..no wonder that so much food gets wasted in this country. Did it smell, was it green...God gave us the ability to spot if food is bad...pork and chicken are possible problems but everything else is fairly ok
