To think I can quit vaping like this?

I've never really smoked. Smoked a few on occasion while drinking. That's it. Got a vape a few years ago to stop doing this, and now it is in my mouth almost 24/7. I hate it. I've never had an addiction and it looks silly and controls far too much of my life
I've thought, should I just start vaping nicotine free only. Maybe add a drop of nicotine if I feel desperate? I can puff as much as i want then and hopefully eventually my body just won't want this stupid thing in my hand any longer.

I stopped vaping by lowering the dose gradually. I went from 12mg, to 11mg, etc. I mixed my own juice so I could do it as gradually as I needed. It took me six months but it was pain free and fairly easy ( I stopped smoking immediately by taking up vaping) , by the time I got down to zero I only did it for a day, it was like sucking air, there was no point. I've been off for quite a few years now. Good luck xx

It's how I quit...but don't go straight to 0mg if you're much higher. I went from 12mg to 6mg to 3mg then to 0 over about 6 months. Then when you're on 0 it's just habit.

After about 3 months of 0 I realised one day at about 4pm that I hadn't picked it up that day. Then the next day the same, then it just petered out completely.

Could you please elaborate on how you mixed your own? Thanks

I would utterly LOVE this to happen to me!

How long did it take before you totally dont look for the familiar thing in hour hand?

@HopefulQuitter I presumed everyone mixed their own nowadays - pre mixed vape juice tastes rotten. Just buy the juice and nicotine separately, I always buy it like this. Add what you need.

Livingmybestlifenow · 05/03/2021 02:35

Set yourself some easy rules about where you can’t use it, so maybe not in your car, kitchen or bedroom. Maybe treat it like cigarettes and only vape outside. It might make you more conscious of your usage.

HopefulQuitter · 05/03/2021 08:36

Okay well I'm torn now..my vape needs a new battery, it is hardly charging.
I've got 0% and havent had any nicotine since yesterday... cold Turkey or do it like freya & burgundy... Smile

Just don't buy a battery! That's the only choice you have to make so it's easy. And you can stop yourself any moment from going out to buy it. Just think OK in this moment I'm not going to buy it. Take it a moment at a time like that.

KarenMarlow3 · 05/03/2021 08:45

I am trying to quit vaping. I threw out all my 12 mg liquids and now I have 6mg, and 3 mg. I tried the 3mg at night, but I was waking up every hour. My body literally woke me up for more nicotine, so I tried the 6 mg, just to get to sleep.
I am going to hopefully continue with the 3mg, and try and get the 0 mg. People have said not to rush it, but the problem is that I vape more of the 3mg, just to get adequate nicotine. I'm desperate to stop as it's making me cough now (after 7 years of vaping). It's a stupid habit. Congratulations to anyone who has managed to quit.

I've not so far. I'm a shift worker though and I am a bit worried that I'd be massively craving if in middle of night when all the shops are shut. I still keep tooting on it obviously with nothing activating.

If you wake up craving it in the night, what's the worst that will happen? It will be an unpleasant, difficult feeling that may last several hours. It won't kill you, or make you ill, or bring you any harm beyond the unpleasantness. And I bet the positive feeling once you've got through those tough few days will be twice as strong. Smile

I know it's easier said than done. I've just found realising there's all sorts of unpleasant feelings actually don't harm me quite freeing.

Everyone I know who vapes is puffing away almost constantly including my DH who has the lowest amount of nicotine you can get so it's not the nicotine he's addicted to it's the action of vaping.

I don't get it as if he smoked it wouldn't be every 15 mins...he was able to go hours without a cigarette.

He doesn't want to stop though so no advice how to do that. I would recommend cold turkey or hypnosis (that's how I gave up smoking several years ago)

HopefulQuitter · 06/03/2021 23:48

Thank you all. Makes a lot of sense. I've been pleasantly surprised at how things have gone so far.

Vaping and smoking are completely different. Smoking gives you an almost instant 'hit' which scratches the itch straight away. The effects then wear off gradually until you get to the point where you need another hit after x minutes or x hours. Then repeat.

Nicotine in vapes is much more slowly absorbed - so you don't get an instant or a full 'hit' in two minutes of using a vape. Essentially you need to use it for longer and more often than you would smoke cigarettes to get the same 'even keel' feeling.

The people I know who have tried vaping as a way of quitting smoking and failed generally do so because they try to treat their vape the same as their cigarettes, expecting a two minute use of it ten times a day to be equivalent to them smoking ten cigarettes - it's not.

However, puffing on a vape for 30 minutes an hour is still usually much less damaging (as far as we know) than smoking any amount of cigarettes.

Whatisthisfuckery · 07/03/2021 10:53

I used to be like you OP, I was like a dragon, clouds of vape coming out of me every waking moment.

I tried the 0 nic thing and it failed miserably. I was tooting away and it wasn’t satisfying me so I just got pissed off and went back to my usual strength.

The only way I could give up the puff was to just stop. I ran down all my juices, then I just chucked all my kit away, my mods, my tanks, my coils, the lot. I’ve not vaped since the beginning of november. It’s actually saved me loads, and now when people come into my house they don’t wave in front of their eyes because of the fog.

LongIslandIcedT · 07/03/2021 10:57

I've been vaping for 5 years+ and I had 18mg strength and used it constantly.
1st Jan this year, I threw all the vape stuff in the bin. The first 2 weeks were tough but I had a water bottle with a straw to suck/ drink and now I don't miss it at all.
Cold Turkey can work but you have to really want to.

crimsonlake · 07/03/2021 11:53

Same here, puffing away all the time and even I get sick of all the cloud of fog and the constant charging. No, you certainly do not get the same instant 'hit' of smoking and if I am having a drink it is a constant.
I am planning to stop for all the above reasons, but unfortunately I have just ordered some new coils despite this.
My plan is to start severely limiting the amount of time I vape and just use it when I am really desperate.
I agree if you reduce the strength you just puff more, but possibly if it is mind over matter I might try it and see if it eases the urge for nicotine gradually. That said I am sure cold turkey is really the only way to go and those of you who have done that have done really well.
Good luck to everyone.

HopefullQuitter · 21/06/2021 09:22

Resurrecting my thread to note that I've gone from full strength to whatever 3mg-0.3% (that's how it is written on the bottle!) means.

It was hard at first and I kept a 6mg one around just in case. But this morning I noticed I didn't wake up wanting it. I'd been awake a good couple of hours before having any.

Wondering if it is time to switch exclusively to 0.0.
I did have the thing that a poster upthread mentions,I.e finding puffing away more supposedly to get the dose of nicotine I was used to but it doesn't seem to have affected my cutting down ultimately. I may go out without it more often and take the next steps...not having it with me unless I'm drinking alcohol may be a start.
