To think I'm going to be diagnosed with diabetes tomorrow?

koolaidpink · 04/03/2021 20:19

My last hba1c in October I can’t remember exact number but I was ‘pre diabetes’ according to doctor. Put on 500 mg metformin.

Hba1c yesterday was 7.1, got a telephone appointment with doctor tomorrow morning.

I’m I going to be told this is diabetes? And what’s likely to happen from here?

Meant to add thanks in advance

Are you sure you were put on Metformin for pre-diabetes?

7.1% is in the diabetic range, but you need two tests 2 weeks apart in the diabetic range to get a diagnosis, unless you are experiencing symptoms. Are you?

kneecapper · 04/03/2021 20:22

You are correct. Over 48 (which is 6.5 in old money) is diabetes

HmmmmmmInteresting · 04/03/2021 20:23

What was your HbA1c when you got put on Metformin? It's worrying that it's actually gone up in a short amount of time despite being put on Metformin.

There is a diabetes topic on here.

koolaidpink · 04/03/2021 20:25

@HmmmmmmInteresting yes definitely was put on that for pre diabetes, the doctor said she hoped would prevent it from going into type 2. Is that not usual? I think for hba1c, as it's giving an average reading of levels for the past 3 months then you only need one. Unlike finger prick tests. Yes I am having symptoms, dry mouth, exhausted, headaches and nausea.

@HmmmmmmInteresting I really can't remember, kicking myself. I will ask tomorrow. It was pre diabetes range is what the doctor said. Wish I could remember or kept a note of it. Yeah I was put on metformin in October but not made a difference obviously. Okay will have a look there thanks. Just posted for traffic here.

ha! im the same, told pre back in march last year and finally got another test done on tues, back in for another in the morning.
i am having symptons of being thirsty, always hungry, sooooo tired, peeing LOTS and also strangely ess leg hair growth which ive been told is also a symptom
not sure what my hba1c was but was told it was that blood test out of a full work up that has prompted another so im expecting it, have been for a while as was also gd with at least 3 of my pregnancies and my father is also diabetic but not sute which type as we are no contact

HmmmmmmInteresting · 04/03/2021 20:29

It's not usual, but it's not a bad idea.
The NICE guidelines definitely say you need two readings.Im thinking maybe it's because a diagnosis is such a major thing so they need to ensure its correct.

Don't worry, you can get the figures from the surgery.
In the meantime have a look on diabetes.co.uk. Really good info on there on how to hopefully reverse it.

koolaidpink · 04/03/2021 20:31

@dawnc27 yes it is a symptom, I never struggled with headaches before all this bother started. Also lots of muscle pains.

OP posts:
koolaidpink · 04/03/2021 20:32

@HmmmmmmInteresting that does make sense as it is a big diagnosis, I wonder if they will get me back in. Yes I will ask tomorrow and will have a look at that website Smile

The being put on Metformin for pre-diabetes is unusual, because if you were only just into the diabetic range they would normally see if you could turn it around with diet and exercise before starting medication. Do you have other medical conditions perhaps?

kneecapper · 04/03/2021 20:37

are you posting about this under a different name? There’s a very similar thread running

Monty27 · 04/03/2021 20:41

to wonder how much the tax evading conglomerates are taking off the government for employees' furlough payments

Larkin01 · 04/03/2021 20:42

Technically yes, you should have 2 readings 3 months apart before confirming the diagnosis. However, in practice, one reading plus having symptoms suggestive of diabetes is enough for a diagnosis to be made. You will likely get a diagnosis of diabetes , and should then be offered eye screening and referral to a diet education course. But I wouldn’t panic - hba1c of 7.1 is equal to 54 in ‘new’ units, and the cut off for diabetes is 48. That’s absolutely reversible with a bit of work Smile

Monty27 · 04/03/2021 20:42

Sorry totally wrong thread 😳

koolaidpink · 04/03/2021 20:45

@kneecapper no, I have a post on Reddit about it but this is the only one here.

@HmmmmmmInteresting no other conditions no

@kneecapper can you link the other post please?

This is like the calm version of yesterday’s angry thread.

Just wait to see what they say, OP, and don’t panic.

travailtotravel · 04/03/2021 20:58

Its possible to reverse some T2 - I really recommend the book life after diabetes which explains the disease pretty well. Essentially, some hard weight loss and a shift in diet will help. I've had to go low carb to get mine under a bit more control but peoples responses to certain foods are different so you will need to figure out what works for you.

koolaidpink · 04/03/2021 20:58

@RickiTarr oh dear Shock thanks, I will try!

This is like the Hyde to the other thread's Jekyll. Or the other way around. I can never remember which is which!

What on earth
RickiTarr · 04/03/2021 21:03

I mean in the sense that you might well be able to reverse it.
