To ask where to move to in London?

Hello,
Looking for some advice from Londoners about which areas are nice to move to? Me and my partner are moving from Oxford as I have a job in the city and he’s working from Heathrow. We have a budget of 500000 at the most for a flat and have been looking at areas such as Chiswick, Fulham, battersea and clapham; but having not spent huge amount of time in London we can’t decide what’s best for us! Looking for somewhere nice, fairly safe and with nice places to go (pubs , cafes etc). Also somewhere nice to bring up young children as hopefully will be thinking about that soon. I stayed in Chiswick last year and loved it- nice pub on the river and the relaxed ‘vibe’ I’m looking for. Just wondering if there’s any other suggestions of where might suit us/ which part you’d recommend?
Sorry for the long winded message!
Thankyou x

Around Kingston and Sutton area

Positives:
Great transport links (into London and further out)
Excellent schools
Safe
Lots of green space
Good shops

Negatives:
Traffic can be quite bad

You can get a three bed house for £500k in this vicinity. Not in Kingston, but close.

Atomsaway · 04/03/2021 17:41

Oh, there’s a direct bus through Sutton and Kingston to Heathrow.

UmbilicusProfundus · 04/03/2021 17:44

Chiswick is a very different vibe from Sutton...

Tambourina · 04/03/2021 17:45

Kew is lovely

alexdgr8 · 04/03/2021 17:46

dont think you'll get much for that money in the areas you've mentioned, OP.

Firsttimemumxxx · 04/03/2021 17:48

UmbilicusProfundus interesting, what would you say the ‘vibe’ of sutton is and how does it differ from Chiswick? :)

I know we probably won’t get much for our money in these areas but I’d rather go for location and get something small and then upsize in the future x

BlackHeath and Greenwich are delightful, we moved as DINKYs (Double Income No Kids Yet) and it was fab, lovely, fun part of town, lots going on, great open spaces and brill for small children

CecilyP · 04/03/2021 17:55

Not particularly handy for Heathrow though!

Needallthesleep · 04/03/2021 18:01

Kentish Town or Peckham Rye?

Needallthesleep · 04/03/2021 18:02

Oh sorry just seen you need access to Heathrow!

ShastaBeast · 04/03/2021 18:02

Ealing and Acton are a bit cheaper and maybe younger than Chiswick. Brentford is undergoing a huge regeneration and is ideal for Heathrow and may link into the new cross rail. Twickenham is nice further south, or head a bit further to Hampton hill or teddington.

Needallthesleep · 04/03/2021 18:04

Earlsfield/Southfields is lovely

ShastaBeast · 04/03/2021 18:04

Be aware the above are also under flight paths into Heathrow.

LadyCounterblast · 04/03/2021 18:05

Long-term Wandsworth/Battersea dweller here. Have family in Sutton and Croydon.

The short answer is that if Chiswick's your vibe, Sutton won't be.

Nothing wrong with Sutton, it's a perfectly good place to live and the schools are terrific.

But it doesn't have that bars/foodie/cafe culture that you would get in Chiswick or Clapham. Not to the same extent, anyway.

Clapham would be a pain for getting to Heathrow I would have thought.

Is your DH driving or getting the train to work?

Mate of mine used to commute to Heathrow from Richmond. She drove, or I think there was a bus laid on for airport employees. (Not sure about that one, it was years ago.)

Hammersmith might be worth a look. It looks hideous from the perspective of the gyratory, but get away from that and there are lots of nice places to eat, shop and drink. Plus it's on the river. Something of an arse for you getting to the City though.

I'd look at places on the train line into Waterloo, 'cos then you can get the Waterloo & City to Bank. Get in early enough and it's really quick. (When you say City, do you mean around Liverpool Street, as in the old City, or Canary Wharf/Docklands?) So: Battersea, Wandsworth, Putney, Barnes, Mortlake, Chiswick, Richmond, Twickenham. All decent places, plenty of 'stuff' to do (and eat and drink!) and you'd also be on the right side of London for your DH to get to the airport.

None of these parts are cheap and some will definitely be a hit-and-hope stretch for 500k but you know that (Oxford isn't exactly affordable either is it)

RainbowHash · 04/03/2021 18:11

East Sheen near Richmond - SW14 - lovely!

LadyCounterblast · 04/03/2021 18:13

Oh! Almost forgot

Wimbledon probably worth a look too

TheYearOfSmallThings · 04/03/2021 18:16

what would you say the ‘vibe’ of sutton is and how does it differ from Chiswick? smile

Sutton is a perfectly pleasant place but the vibe is "ordinary". People who can afford Chiswick don't choose Sutton.

(I can't afford either, I'd be grateful to live in Sutton. Even though it is far out of London.)

Branleuse · 04/03/2021 18:17

Greenwich is lovely

sunshinesupermum · 04/03/2021 18:21

Chiswick has a London vibe but still family-friendly. Sutton is suburban. I agree about Earlsfield/Southfields/East Sheen and Acton/Ealing bearing in mind your husband's job. But £500K won't buy you much in London if you want a family home.

harridan50 · 04/03/2021 18:23

Daughter rents in Balham really really lovely

UmbilicusProfundus · 04/03/2021 18:26

People have already answered your question to me about Sutton v Chiswick. Thanks. I agree!

marcella1 · 04/03/2021 18:27
