World Obesity Day

Vs #worldobesitydayhack
2 opposite sides, one trying to address the issue and one celebrating it.
Aibu to wonder which side - if either - is correct?

I wouldn't say there is anything to be celebrated about being obese.
I am overweight/borderline obese before anyone has a go.

Manteo · 04/03/2021 12:53

@Northernsoullover same.

NuniaBeeswax · 04/03/2021 12:55

🙄

Greenqueen40 · 04/03/2021 12:58

@NuniaBeeswax why the face? Its all over my Instagram and I'm presuming many others, my opinion doesn't go either way, its not a 'fat bashing' thread if that's your insinuation

I'm morbidly obese due to illness, although now losing weight post treatment. There is nothing to celebrate about obesity, I've lost years of my life to it. But at the same time there needs to be a serious rethink about attitudes to people who are obese. Abuse and insults and dehumanising people because of their weight is widespread and it's not ok.

dontdisturbmenow · 04/03/2021 13:01

What should be celebrated is that no matter who you are, you should never fall I to self-loathing.

That's very different to celebrating putting your health in serious compromise.

ComtesseDeSpair · 04/03/2021 13:02

Where are there “two sides”? World Obesity Day as a movement seems quite clear that obesity isn’t something to celebrate, their angle is that it’s a disease which requires research and attention.

PurpleDaisies · 04/03/2021 13:03

This has totally passed me by.

Obesity is a medical problem. I’d love to think that “world obesity day” is promoting healthy eating and lifestyle changes but I’m guessing it is something else.

VeganVeal · 04/03/2021 13:03

World Obesity Day?
Great I'll have another chocolate bar and bag of crisps to celebrate

Inpersuitofhappiness · 04/03/2021 13:04

I've been super morbidly obese, I've been morbidly obese, am still obese now. Nothing at all to celebrate about it.
However the problem I see is when its an issue thats addressed, a lot of obese people take it as an attack, and those people will often dig their heels in and continue with their ways, because they think they're being victimised.
The fat acceptance community is a dangerous one and is often very anti weightloss. It's madness how this has become a thing. The Pro ana sites were shut down and blocked, no such thing for the fat acceptance community thats leading to deaths in the same way.

Unless you're new here, you know how these threads turn out.

Says it better than I could.
DrSbaitso · 04/03/2021 13:11

Not sure it's a healthy or constructive way of framing it. Emphasis more on healthy habits and lifestyles might be more useful.

therealteamdebbie · 04/03/2021 13:11

I find it terrifying that we are trying to celebrate and the media trying to brainwash us that obesity is great.

The "love your curves" "real women have curves" etc.. are so damaging.
(let alone insulting to slimmer women who are just as real but healthy!)

You cannot state that it's not a positive to be overweight without being immediately shut-up and accused of fat shaming.

When you are no longer allowed to be factual about simple facts, it 's more than a worry. Then you have MN with the over-eating competitive threads to illustrate the problem.

Bookriddle · 04/03/2021 13:11

Let's buy a cake and celebrate the day.....

Okbussitout · 04/03/2021 13:12

As an obese person I feel what I'd actually like is more awarnes and understanding from the medical community and general public about why people become obese. You see it on here where people are adament were juat lazy and probably stupid. So if the dya could do that then I'm for it.

I also don't think you need to pit understanding against fat acceptance. Some people will never be a healthy weight. Does this mean they should feel they are morally wrong? I Don't think so. So for me a fat acceptance movement is important. This doesn't mean we can't also talk about the potential health implications of being fat.

There's also an issue that the actual impact on health is poorly understood. With many people both professionals and not blaming weight on anything and everything medical a fat person may experience. So I think the fat positive /advocacy community plays an important role here to. In campaigning for fat people to be treated with respect and receive good medical treatment.

meditrina · 04/03/2021 13:14

I don't think obesity should be celebrated, but many other potentially fatal bodily issues have awareness days, so I think the general idea is fine.

But needs tactful handling if it is to be a global day, given how many countries remain scourged by malnourishment and the effects of food deprivation

Greenqueen40 · 04/03/2021 13:23

@NuniaBeeswax this is my first post
@ComtesseDeSpair there are two sides because world obesity day is there to promote healthy weight loss and a change in lifestyle while worldobesitydayhack is the opposite and celebrates obesity and body positivity

Slim women have curves too. My boobs, arse and hips haven’t fallen off because I’m in the healthy weight range.

of course, but genuine "curves". Halle Berry is curvy.

The photos we are brainwashed to accept as "normal" and "real" are never of curvy women, are they. It's about normalising obesity.

"@NuniaBeeswax this is my first post"

Says it all. Nice bait though.
