I’ve had a horrible couple of years with lots of mcs and doing several rounds of ivf this year. I’m pretty stressed.
We live in a middle floor flat and the flat on top want to do a loft conversion (dorma)
I’m really stressing about what the noise will be like. My dh thinks I’m being unreasonable and it will be fine. I work at home.
Has anyone been in my position and can let me know please what it’s like and what things I should think to request of my neighbours? We get on well with them
Thanks

You can't stop them doing it so be generous. The people in the room next door to my back bedroom, which i'm using as an office, have just taken down the chimney breast, knocked out the wall between their kitchen and dining room below, knocked out the back of their house, honestly it's not great, but there isn't constant noise. I have the builders' phone number and when I've had a couple of really important calls I've asked them to keep to quiet jobs for an hour. Do it once or twice and they will be very decent, be a pain in the arse and nobody will end up happy, least of all you.

Hi thanks for your response. Oh I’m definitely not trying to stop them, we get on well. I just want to know is it awful during the day or is it okay . Also anything I should request ( like not working Saturdays) they are nice and we can probably work out a way to make it better within reason

Yes it will be loud at times but nothing you can do about that. You can expect them to stick to noisy works hours which are 8am-6pm. You can't really ask them to do anything, they can't down tools because you WFH.

If things open up you may be able to work somewhere else on noisy days - coffee shop etc?

Thanks due to the nature of my work I can’t work in public spaces. I will grin and bear it - have any of you been in flats underneath a flat having it done? I’ve seen people having neighbours doing it.
I guess I want to go into it prepared a bit for noise levels or knowing it might not be as bad as I think

Yes, they will play their radio probably and turn it down every time you complain but then turn it up again - but I have some sympathy because this is every day of their working life and having the radio on must make the job more enjoyable. You need earplugs, and a headset. Or another place to work if any of your bubble or your office can accommodate you. Get yourself into a mindset that it's not forever and will pass.

Our NDN had one last summer, we’re terrace.

It was bloody awful. Sorry.

Not much you can do though.

If you can afford it, I can't recommend these enough. I had to get them because of our neighbours building an extension and they've been a life saver.
But they won't be a great help when you're sat in meetings of course.
