To think they’ve messed up Marmite?

I’ve loved Marmite literally since I was a baby.

I’ve noticed that in recent years the consistency of Marmite seems to have become much thicker. If you use normal standard Marmite from a jar, it more or less stays on your knife in a solid lump and doesn’t spread onto the buttered bread or toast at all. It never used to be like that!

The solution over the last few years I’ve found is to buy Squeezy Marmite, which is like normal Marmite used to be in consistency. However, a) you waste loads of it and it’s messy trying to get the last bit out of the jar, and, more importantly, b) since a few months into the pandemic you don’t seem to be able to buy it anywhere any more. I did read that there was a supply issue with Marmite, and they seem to have stopped making the Squeezy one.

AIBU to be fed up about this? Is it just me or do other people think that normal Marmite has changed for the worse?

I haven't noticed a difference with the normal marmite

Could your kitchen now be cooler than your kitchen a few years ago?

I don't know about the squeeze marmite as I've never used it, but they don't have it in stock at the tesco that delivers to me, I've just checked.

Shoppingwithmother · 03/03/2021 17:32

I do wonder that, it’s a good point. My house is not the warmest, but I’ve only noticed this for a couple of years, and my house has always been in the cold side!

I would think it's temperature related too. My kitchen is quite warm and the marmite is it's usual soft spreadable consistency.

I'm more annoyed that it is no longer gluten free.

TheGlitterFairy · 03/03/2021 17:38

There’s def a shortage of marmite at the moment if my recent supermarket shop is anything to go by! Has to be a glass jar all the way, not the squeezy version! But yes - I noticed the same recently too.

LaurieFairyCake · 03/03/2021 17:39

I 10 seconds in microwave it

Pyewackect · 03/03/2021 17:41

What's the morning glory with Marmite XO extra old ?.

HandsomeJack · 03/03/2021 17:47

I buy the cheapie store brand yeast extract, it's softer.

THisbackwithavengeance · 03/03/2021 18:13

I like aldi marmite, much softer and tastes more or less the same.

Justcallmebebes · 03/03/2021 18:15

I was going to say the same about room temperature. I think yours might be being stored at too cool a temp.

I've not being able to get hold of the marmite rice cakes recently. Wonder if there's a connection

ExpertlyProcrastinating · 03/03/2021 18:15

I've definitely noticed it being thicker! I like the Sainsbury's own 'reduced salt' version- it's softer and I can trick myself into thinking it's a bit better for me.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 03/03/2021 18:19

I'm not or love it or hate it person - I get a craving for it about once a year, hence it keeps for ages, but does get thick.

I carve a piece out an microwave or put it in the oven if its on, and/or mix in some boiling water to get it to the right consistency.

JaquelineBeanstalk · 03/03/2021 18:20

Mine was thicker today! It sits on a shelf on my office, not refrigerated or anything, and the jar has been opened a few weeks now.

UncomfortableSilence · 03/03/2021 18:21

I've noticed this too it seems to drag across the toast, but I shall persevere as have also been a marmite lover since birth Grin

Only glass bottles here too and very few on the shelf, I may try some of the above alternatives

Shoppingwithmother · 03/03/2021 18:23

Thanks - I’m glad to know it’s not just me!

ViperAtTheGatesOfDawn · 03/03/2021 18:24

I thought the opposite, that it used to be thicker and is now too soft. In the last year though it has become very inconsistent, sometimes thick like I think it should be, and sometimes soft and wrong!

RealisticSketch · 03/03/2021 18:24

I wonder if the marmite shortage is connected to the pubs being shut since it is a by-product of the brewing industry? 🤔

SallyOMalley · 03/03/2021 18:25

I thought it's just because it's colder!

God, I LOVE Marmite. I'm devastated that my kids hate it. My dh calls it 'monkey toe jam' . Nice.

TiddleTaddleTat · 03/03/2021 18:27

Ooh I've just seen Tesco's yeast extract looks like it's gluten free. I haven't had marmite for years since becoming coeliac. I love marmite.

Theforest · 03/03/2021 18:28

I never thought I would ever say this, but supermarket marmite is so much better. Never went back until last time I got a substitute on click and collect. You can't even spread the branded marmite anymore. And weird colour.

Shoppingwithmother · 03/03/2021 18:29

Yes, RealisticSketch, I have heard that that is the reason.

GooodMythicalMorning · 03/03/2021 18:29

I prefer the tesco version

MrsGradyOldLady · 03/03/2021 18:30

I've not noticed this at all. And I have work marmite and home marmite.

Cadburys on the other hand...

8090sTv · 03/03/2021 18:33

I could only find big jars.

Towards the end of the jar it gets too thick to spread. I thought it was because its had too much air. Hence wanting to buy a smaller jar.

Marmite and Philadelphia : P

Shoppingwithmother · 03/03/2021 18:36

It has never occurred to me to try an own-brand version - it seems like a crime against humanity!

But maybe I’ll give it a go...

All Marmite is delicious.

Definitely rate the XO version, and the new Dynamite chilli Marmite is delicious
