to think a £100 contactless payment limit is asking for fraud

It's supposed to boost spending. For some reason.
Announced today in the budget.

I have rarely had to put my PIN in when using contactless. It's rare to see checks done. Unless I am missing something.

So now, if someone steals my card, they could spend a lot of money on it.

I would like to set my own limit. In fact, I would like to have a card that asks for a PIN at a higher frequency at the moment.

I don't really see the advantage of a £100 limit. I do see me forgetting my PIN as I rarely buy many things over £100 when shopping.

I wouldn't mind it being the maximum limit but allow me to control my own limit through my banking app so I could keep it low but increase it if I want to make a larger purchase. The tech can't be that hard to code given I can block and unblock the card from the app if I think my card is lost, surely?

@normalnormas

If the chip is damaged you have to enter a pin each time.
Thank you!

You’d be surprised 😂

I've never put my pin in Confused

It's really weird that people are saying it's happening every 5 transactions, I've never had this

If your card was stolen and you reported it within a reasonable time to your bank then you are usually covered for any fraudulent activity. As long as you were taking due care and didn’t lend it to someone for instance.

Most banking apps have a function where you can temporarily turn your card “off” - if you think you may have lost it but not absolutely sure and don’t want to report it in case you left it in the car, for example.

There’s no reason to not realise within a fairly quick amount of time that either your card has gone or you have fraudulent activity on your account - mobile banking apps are free and easy to use.

I won't be taking my cards out with me anymore. I have my iPhone and Apple Watch to pay with so they will be safer left at home.

I thought it was in a single day as I've never had it either? I only have to put my pin in for petrol as it wants me to pre authorise up to £99.

Now I'm worrying if it's a way to encourage this kind of payment as part of all the tech future 😱

Interestingly issuers make less from digital wallet transactions so they’re less keen to push the uptake.

@HeartsAndClubs

Apple Pay doesn’t have a limit, however it does use biometrics to authenticate so is more secure. not on the watch it doesn’t.
But you can’t unlock the watch without either the pin on the watch or using the biometrics on your phone.

@Sexnotgender no I meant the mask thing in the sense that if thieves use stolen cards in shops, they’re unlikely to be identified or caught through CCTV because they conveniently have a mask over their face. Before, wearing a balaclava in a shop drew attention Grin now it’s an actual legal requirement to cover your face.

Thanks, that cheered me up.

"Do you not have to put your PIN in the little PDQ machine after £80 or so of doing contactless payments? I do. And so does everyone I know..."

I was about to say this had never happened to me. Then I remembered I pay for petrol at the pump so I'm putting my PIN in regularly. Other people who think you're not being asked for your PIN - could it be because of something similar?

Setting up transaction notifications eased worry of my card being fraudulently used for me. Every time my debit or credit card is used, a Direct Debit goes out, or a payment is made I get a push notification at the time. Bank with Halifax. As it's a joint account we both get the notification (so no secret spending at the garden centre 🤣).
