To ask about your petty neighbour experiences

Kind of lighthearted because its so ridiculous, but also not because the cheek has actually annoyed me 😂

Backstory: DP and I live on a row of 5 houses, with a shared yard (but everyone has their own parking spaces). The house we live in used to belong to my grandparents. On the end there's another couple (I'm guessing around 60 and 80 years old) who are not very nice people. Constantly trying to control what other neighbours do, where they can park, harassing them, reporting them for silly things like kids playing in the yard, they've had issues with every single neighbour. I'm sure you know the sort. Weve never had any issues with them really as we've kept our heads down, until now when we committed the ultimate sin of using the outdoor tap to wash the dogs muddy feet. 😂
This tap is communal, we all pay a share of the water, it doesn't belong to anybody. Weve used it about 3 times in 4 years, but the nasty neighbour uses it all the time.
He told me we couldn't use it as it was broken (but I've seen him using it after this) and I've notice this week he's put a bag over it and tied it up so nobody else can use it 😂 I can't get over the pettiness. Half of me is tempted to go and take it off and use it everyday to make a point. The other half of my brain is telling me to leave it, I don't really use it anyway and not to make trouble.
I'm just absolutely gobsmacked by the audacity. Can anyone else top my petty neighbour? Would I be unreasonable to start using the tap daily to have a wash 😂 should I surrender in the tap war?

Cats can be taken out on leash same as dogs. They are domestic pets, not wild rovers.

I wouldnt ever do that with a cat

custardbear · 02/03/2021 05:54

Me either @BonnieDundee - mine like to roam wild, like the birds 😆

Hahahaha!

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than post on Mumsnet and remove all doubt.

Graciebobcat · 02/03/2021 06:09

@SplendidSuns1000 Plant a meadow, fantastic for wildlife and you hardly ever have to mow it. Plus, worth it just for your neighbour's reaction.

KiteAir · 02/03/2021 06:11

@BreakfastOfWaffles

At a previous house, we lived on a terrace and each house had a small front garden. In the autumn when the leaves blew off the trees, one neighbour would sweep up the leaves in his garden, divide them by type and return them to the relevant neighbours! 😂
Commitment to the game. I like it.
orangejuicer · 02/03/2021 06:20

This thread has made me feel so much better about my NDN situation. Apparently I am being unreasonable for not wanting weed smells in my house with my 2yo (coming through shared attic) , but hearing these stories makes me feel less like a busybody!

KiteAir · 02/03/2021 06:29

@TheChip

There is an elderly couple in my street. They hawk eye anyone and everyone who enters the street. I said hello when passing one day while the woman was sweeping the street and she ranted on about how she knows exactly who is throwing the rubbish. It felt like a dig towards me, as if suggesting it's my kids, when I know its not. I just smiled and continued on.

Same neighbour when I was having flooring fitted. She came out and shouted at the fitters, telling them that their van is going to break the road. They tried explaining that the road is there to be parked on and drove on, but she was having none of it. They were hawk eyed each time they went back to the van.
Same neighbour ranted at my dad about the amount of people who parked in our street who didn't live here. He is one of them when he comes to my house lol. There's room for like 10 cars, and there is only 3 at most taken up every night.

Another elderly neighbour threatened to phone the police on my kids for playing on the tree (it's the first thing most kids do when walking through our street - swing on the tree)
Another came and knocked to complain that my children were annoying them by playing with a bouncy ball as she was on nightshift and the bouncing kept waking her up.

I dont let me kids play in the street anymore as its not worth the hassle lol

Urgh I'm not sure if love a bouncy ball launching around while on nights. I had next doors kids when I lived in a terrace throwing their ball onto the roof and the noise was terrible. The parents stopped them but ffs.. I felt like saying 'use your brains, people don't want balls bouncing off their roof and wall and windows'. Some people think kids can just do anything
custardbear · 02/03/2021 06:35

We have a weird set up with next doors garage on our driveway, so they have right of access to get to the garage. Fine, we just leave it clear at that part (big driveway), but the entrance is small to drive/road so we don't want it blocked. Previous owner of next door land her children (all over 60 as mum in her 90's) thought they could bully us (early 30's) into using our driveway as and wham wanted. Spoke to solicitors who said no, they had right to drive across to garage but not park on the drive only in the garage.
We had all sorts of crap from them over the years, the kids didn't even live there ! One time theyd parked on the drive and I'd just got back from shopping so blocked them in, I had a knock at the front door asking to move my car. I said they'd have to wait as my DH was showering and we had a crawling baby so wasn't prepared to leave her alone. 2 mins later neighbours grandson knocked again saying 'we have to leave' I said sorry DH still showering, he knocked again and I let rip telling him the facts about the driveway and I was sick and tired of being bullied by his horrible family. He went aeay and his dad came back and told me to move because his DIL was partially blind and they needed to go - WTF - so!!!
This all lasted around 4-5 minutes and I moved my car, I did let rip again and told them they could only park in their mums garage from now on. They didn't, he said I can't fit the car in the garage so we'll 'have' to park on your drive.
I started receiving letters from the eldest son stating we couldn't park on our drive as they wanted to use it as a turning circle so I was never allowed to ever park on my drive again - they were a bunch of shits.
Her daughter lived 5 minutes away and the am on by I'd times she'd park across the driveway was becoming annoying, her husband would call out from the road that we weren't allowed to park on our drive - god it was annoying
I had the police around so many times, it stopped a while when I gave the police the registration and try y said they'd knock on her door for swearing at us in front of our children.
When their mum died and they were selling their house I lost it completely when the daughter purposefully left the garage door part open, just high enough to damage my child's face/eye if they ran around the corner of our house to our driveway as it was obscured. I phoned the estate agent, told them to get rhat bloody woman to close the garage door or I'd call the police yet again about her behaviour - they called back to apologise but she was in the bath - I told them she had 5 minutes left or that was it - and also can they add to their notes there's a horrific neighbour dispute and harassment rhats documented by the police, thankfully she showed that Caper, but she was a total deranged cow

My psycho ex bought the house next door to me. He stands on his roof and stared into my house and has loud conversations with his new gf that he is being stalked.

He goes to the pub next door to his house and if I dare to go in there as well he puts it all over sm that he is being stalked again and how unfair it is.

He reported me to the police for stealing recycling bins and it turned out he had actually ordered them to be delivered to my
House so he could report me.

Him and his gf have photos all over sm of my cat in their house.

I could go on.

yep that was me. She's still finding ways to make my life miserable....

SquarePeggyLeggy · 02/03/2021 07:28

We live next door to a crazy lady. She ignores us (used to chat) and ignores our children and tells her children to ignore us (they go to school with mine) because we are friends with the neighbours on the other side of her. They have no outdoor space and a giant dog, and 4 years ago, our nice neighbour’s husband joked: “do you walk the dog or does the dog walk you?” (She is very thin and it drags the lead). She then refuses to acknowledge any of us, or our children. If a stray ball goes over her fence from the neighbour kids, she keeps it. She won’t answer the door and when the neighbours 8 year old tried to approach her for his ball back, she put the garage door down in his face.
I actually posted on here because I was so confused by her rudeness, but she recently had a huge argument with the nice neighbours and her husband admitted that’s what it was when they asked why she’s like this.

SquarePeggyLeggy · 02/03/2021 07:31

So... we have a neighbour who ignores us because of something innocuous someone else joked about.

meganiris1922 · 02/03/2021 07:38

These have made me laugh . I have had hell with people where I live . 1st one was my next door neighbour kept putting a half eaten chicken on our doorstep and running back in her house 😂 she's about 70 . Then accused us off egging her house , also used to call me. An Evil bitch under her breath . But now we get on really well lol she makes me loads of pies ! Then my neighbours across the road used to get their hair off about parking ! Iv had my car keyed by him also I seen his bald head moving in his window when I was sitting on my sofa . He was filming me ! I go up stairs and he's butt naked staring at me blinds wide open . Can't wait to move 😂

Live in apartments. We’ve lived here 7 years. Longest residents -meh. New residents moved in last year. We received 3 letters regarding rubbish, people just dumping their rubbish on the floor, causing rats, bin room stunk. It was all disgusting. Sent a letter out with a picture of the woman doing it. We have a holiday home, and went away for 3 months, so we missed two letters. One with a picture of the lady and then a second a week later stating that they know it was me, because the new resident said it was me ‘if slurtdragon is scared of the rats please be assured that they are no longer there’.

It was them, the picture very clearly showed it was them, they have shorter hair, and are larger than me physically.

They then went on to say if it happens again WE will get the bill. Baring in mind we’ve lived here 7 years - no problems EVER like this, they’ve lived here a couple of months.

I went into the agents office enraged (internally) showed them the letter, whilst I was stood there they were very sorry - fair enough.

I didn’t speak to her for 6 months. Blatantly ignored her, but now I do say hello because we’re moving out this year and I felt terrible.

I do not litter. As a child if I ever tried I would be made to go and pick it up wind or rain. I was very very angry, the fact that we could have been left with £££ bill for something we didn’t do was simply infuriating.

We’re not talking young & childish here, she’s a bloody GP!!

I have always tried with neighbours, I’ve always advised them to not leave things in their car, not park in particular places as they’ll end up getting a fine etc etc, if they need anything my name is slurtdragon and I live in number *. I’d had full on convos with this woman too.

It just really made me bloody sad and angry.

Slurtdragon · 02/03/2021 08:01

This happened 2019 actually 🤣 not Covid 2020

My new neighbour decided to build a fence 5ft into my land. Polite requests didn’t work so eventually had to go to court. He told the judge previous owner told him that his boundary was correct, but I had deeds which showed my boundary was correct. Judge told him to remove fence in 10 days and pay all costs.

Three months later with fence still there he took us to court for rent for mowing the grass on his fenced off area. Different judge sent him to prison for contempt of court for not taking fence down.

Disfordarkchocolate · 02/03/2021 08:32

@DynamoKev one of our next door neighbour's sons is always smoking weed. He keeps it in the hedge that separates the path at the bottom of our gardens and another neighbour's garden. He also like to smoke it ducked down behind our fence. Not sure why all this can't be done 2 meters further down that path outside his fence. To be honest he's the most of pleasant of the family who are all bloody annoying and just lack that bit of courtesy that makes for good neighbours.

Whammyyammy · 02/03/2021 09:05

We used to live in a row of 6 houses down a narrow lane, no parking on the lane and we were the only house that had a drive.

Came home one day to find not one, but two cars on our drive. NDN straight out and informed us who they were.
Husband went round to the house, it was relatives visiting the bitter old lady at the end of the lane, and they refused to move stating they woukd be gone in a few hours.
Husband told me to go in and he'd sort.

He called his mate to come round with his modified land rover with winch.
15 minutes later our car was on our drive and lots of beeping as two cats were blocking the lane, fortunately they had a note on the back saying where they were visiting Smile.
They soon shifted their cars then

Whammyyammy · 02/03/2021 09:05

Cars not cats lol

Reading these posts where there's justice in the end are so cathartic. This is like therapy 😂

@EggysMom

Last summer our neighbours would take advantage of the nice weather to have a barbecue in their back garden. I wouldn't have minded if it was evening, but they'd light it around 3pm whilst I still had washing on the line, so I'd have to make a mad dash to bring in the washing and then drape it around the house to finish drying.

Over winter they've now got into a habit of burning excess cardboard in an incinerator in the middle of the weekend afternoon. (For some reason, they haven't considered asking the council for a larger cardboard recycling bin.) This now means I cannot hang out weekend washing in the afternoon on sunny spring days also. Hmmmmmmph.

Why should I have to do washing on weekdays (I work) or get up at stupid o'clock so that it's on the line by 8am and dry by noon?

I have the exact same issue with one of my neighbours. He’s built this BBQ thing and put it right against our fence so the smoke absolutely billows into our garden! His garden is massive he could easily put it somewhere else. We had our duvet cover on the line at the weekend and it absolutely stunk, I’ve had to wash it again. It was horrible last year we couldn’t sit in the garden because the smoke was so bad. He’ll get a shock this year because I’m pregnant and will be heavily pregnant in summer and I won’t be standing for it again 😂
vivenne · 02/03/2021 09:24

My last neighbours wanted to use our garden specifically for their dog to s##t in as our garden was bigger. Obviously put a stop to that.

ZackaryQuack · 02/03/2021 09:29

I'm really enjoying the karma some of these neighbours are getting!!!!

Hoppinggreen · 02/03/2021 09:30

My neighbour, known as Dickhead. Came out of his house the same time as me to tell me he was unhappy I had got a dog
The houses are detached with a reasonable gap in between, he actually had to come over to my front garden to tell me this
I asked if my dog was barking or doing anything else to inconvenience him. He said no, he just didn’t like dogs and he wasn’t happy if he came out of his house at the same time as I did he might see my dog (from a minimum of 200yds away). He also said that if he looked out of his upstairs windows into my garden and the dog was out he might see it.
I suggested he not look in my garden
He’s moved now and there is a lovely family there who adore my dog and have actually just got a puppy
