carpet installation drama

Very exciting topic... But I'm a complete newbie to all things house renovation so please lend me your widsom.

I paid a company to install new carpets in our three bedroom house, and a new wooden floor in the downstairs.

They've finished the job and done it well. They have however left 2.5 boxes of floor boards (two unopened, completely sealed) and multiple (unopened) rolls of underlay at the house. When I asked when they'd be taking it away, they said we would have to pay them to remove it.

To my mind, they ordered the quantity for the house, which was clearly quite a lot more than we needed. I don't understand why they don't want to take away these materials (which have been paid for) and use them for something else.

On their T&Cs it says that they aren't responsible for removing any 'offcuts'. But these aren't offcuts... they're whole huge boxes of boards and rolls of underlay.

So, AIBU to expect them to remove left over product? Is this just a standard part of getting new flooring which I didn't know about?

Surely it's you that's paid for it, not them?

Phone the company and clarify, then see if they want to buy back the excess.

LittleGwyneth · 27/02/2021 17:57

@honeysucklejasmine I've paid for the materials, absolutely. But when I phoned them they said they didn't want any of it and I'd have to pay them to take it away.

It can be useful to have a bit extra in case of damage you would have some spare to fix it with. I have only been left with half opened things, I don’t know why they wouldn’t take the full boxes back. We’re they just fitters or did they supply it too?

zigzagbetty · 27/02/2021 18:00

Can you not return unopened packs to the supplier for a refund?

Snowymcsnowsony · 27/02/2021 18:02

Sell it!!

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 27/02/2021 18:06

You've paid for those materials. Who did the measuring? If you've paid for quantities that just weren't needed I'd expect a refund and for them to take away the surplus unopened boxes and rolls.

That said, it might be a case of buying in larger quantities working out cheaper. Flog the underlay and opened boxes of flooring on Facebook, or give them away if there's a community lend a hand site you can join.

1Morewineplease · 27/02/2021 18:09

Sounds like the measurements were a bit skewiff but you've bought and paid for what was supplied.
I'd suck it up. Maybe put the wood flooring in the garage but the carpet excess, should have been offered to you so that you could say whether you wanted to keep it or not.
Sorry, not much help.

Ileflottante · 27/02/2021 18:13

Sell it! Make some money back!

Catlitter1 · 27/02/2021 18:13

Depends if they measured and fitted from the same place. If so someone has over ordered and they should absolutely refund and take away the surplus if in sealed full packs. If you have measured and ordered to be fitted then it’s up to you how you deal with the excess.
Fitters are often sub contracted by the retailer so it depends on how you measured and how the fitters were hired.

LittleGwyneth · 27/02/2021 18:28

We bought it from the same people who fitted it. They've now offered to come and collect it for free but I'm trying to work out if I should be paying for the excess (it's quite a lot!)

Thanks for the help though.

Put it up for sale on ebay

User0ne · 27/02/2021 18:33

I don't think you're being unreasonable. What you have described is an "over order" not off cuts.

However you may find it useful to have spare bits of floor available for repairs in 10years time and underlay can be used for all sorts of things both in the house or garden. You can probably sell it on Facebook if you really want rid of it

Catlitter1 · 27/02/2021 18:42

If it’s in full sealed full packs they have mis measured and should be refunding you. If the packs had to be opened and part used that is an excess to cover the floor area and unfortunately you cannot claim this back even if if it was the smallest amount used. You should have been told this at the point of ordering when it comes to excess especially if using
packs, vinyl or underlay etc

Proudboomer · 27/02/2021 18:43

It all depends on what carpet you chose and where it is fitted as carpet comes in either 4 or 5 metre widths. Some will come in both and some only in 5 metres.
If you had stairs and landing then you are going to have a lot of wastage even on a 4 metre wide carpet.

Proudboomer · 27/02/2021 18:48

Only just seen they have left underlay as well. They should have charged you for the same amount of underlay as carpet so if your ordered 30 square metres of carpet then the underlay is also 30 square metres.
If they have only charged you for what was used I would treat the left rolls as a freebie and stick it is the loft for when you might need it or sell it on marketplace.
If they have charged you for more underlay than carpet then I would be after a refund.

Chloemol · 27/02/2021 18:51

I would be telling them they have obviously mis measured, and you want money back for the unopened stuff. I would keep the open stuff as spares just in case

VodkaSlimline · 27/02/2021 19:54

Is there an invoice that confirms how much was ordered?

GreenSlide · 27/02/2021 19:57

Did they come and do the measuring or did you give them the measurements?

SunnierTimesInUKClimes · 27/02/2021 19:57

its standard procedure to over order of this kind of thing....some boards may have defects or be cut inaccurately. not a case of measuring and ordering exactly what you need

when we are out of lockdown, stick it all on marketplace?
