Children's panel interview

Posting for traffic.

Have an interview to volunteer with the children's panel next week and am feeling really nervous for some reason.

Trying to prepare for the interview but have no idea where to start. I have been given a topic to speak about for a few minutes which is no problem, I have that done.

But what else can I expect? What kind of questions are they likely to ask? Has anyone had an interview with them and could give me an idea?

It's over Microsoft teams and they have scheduled me in for 45 minutes.

Thanks in advance.

Which type of children's panel. There are quite a few areas I could guess at you meaning?

godsavetheteen · 27/02/2021 12:09

So it's in Scotland, infants, children and young people that are having issues can come before a children's panel where the members of the panel (ie volunteers) make legal decisions on behalf of the infant, child or young person. This could be deciding where the young person lives, goes to school etc.

This decision is made by speaking to the relevant people so the young person (if able), social workers etc.

So I am assuming how I communicate is going to come up so will prepare for that.

When I went for my 'informal' interview, it wasn't informal in the slightest. Just so you're warned. It was a full on interview discussing how I'd dealt with certain situations that I'd put on my application. It was rather gruelling, to say the least.

Good luck.

@AuntyMabelandPippin oh no really 😅 when was your interview? Thanks for the heads up!

A couple of years ago. I ticked all the boxes, but it didn't work out for me, which I'm actually glad about now.

I was so cross about it I told the clerk if he'd told me it was a formal interview, I would have prepared for it, I assumed it would just be how I would deal with certain situations and my history of working with children. It wasn't.

I hope it goes well for you.

@AuntyMabelandPippin yeah that's really unfair, at least give someone the chance to prepare properly. But glad it all worked out in the end for you.

They've not stated whether it's formal or informal but have given me a topic to speak about for a few minutes which is fine but I will prepare for it as if it is a very formal interview to be on the safe side.

Thanks for your help Smile

There is a lot of training for it as well. Obviously it'll be different at the moment, but I think it was about ten weekends of work IIRC.

Good on you for volunteering, there's never enough people who can make a difference and the Children's Panel is very important.

Sapphiretrainers · 27/02/2021 13:43

I remember being asked questions about my motivation for joining the panel, not so much about experience working with children or young people. I would say it was quite formal, I wouldn't assume it was a friendly chat type interview.
