AIBU asking my DH to wash his hands with soap?

Dear Mumsnetters, DH puts bins and recycling out, comes in holds hands under tap for about 2 secs then dries.
Stomps upstairs in a fury because I say he needs to wash them with soap after dealing with rubbish bins. Apparently I’m being unreasonable.

Ew, hands get washed after touching the bin. Next doors' cat runs along it. Birds crap on them. Basically, they are outside all the time and not clean.

Is there hand soap at the sink he rinses in? Our kitchen sink has both dish and hand soap for this very reason.

Rainbowsandstorms · 04/03/2021 23:57

Not unreasonable at all. We are in the middle of a pandemic and bin men touch numerous bins.

Twillow · 04/03/2021 23:58

YANBU
Our local bin men even had a post on social media pointing out how many bins they touch each day and the potential for germs/covid transmission so asking people to WASH THEIR HANDS WITH SOAP!!! when they have brought bins back in.

Coffeeandcocopops · 05/03/2021 00:01

Our council advised us to wash our hands after moving the bins because of Covid. It’s the same using the fuel pumps. An adult should know this. Not washing your hands after having a pee is disgusting. Explains why Covid has spread so easily,

YANBU DH used to get arsey if I asked him to wash hands before preparing baby bottles (he may have just had a wee or been on a dog walk and not washed his hands). Has also been offended in the past when he's been asked to wash hands before sex (as I don't really want dirty hands that haven't been washed going inside me). I gave up asking due to getting arsey. He did wash hands more regularly at start of Covid but it's gone by the wayside now 🤷🏻‍♀️

a) the OP doesn't have to be grateful for another adult doing some chores in the house

b) who doesn't' wash their hands after touching the bins?! That's disgusting. So it IS true that people did not wash their hands before the pandemic and the reason why shops ran out of soaps?

Sapho47 · 05/03/2021 00:31

@GeordieGreigsButtButtZoom

He properly stamps and has an argument with you over this?

(You're right, but even if you weren't...stomping off and fury? Over this? Is there a back story?)

Or more likely the op has a tendency to blow things out of proportion and walking up stairs becomes "stamps off"
therealteamdebbie · 05/03/2021 00:32

Our council advised us to wash our hands after moving the bins

That is actually true. In 2020-2021, councils had to tell adults to wash their hands in the UK.

I wash my hands after putting the bins out, partly from touching the bin itself, but also the back door key and handle, which are metal and make my fingers smell of brass, and having to unlock the wooden gate which is usually a bit wet and grubby, plus potentially picking up stray bits of rubbish out in the garden and popping them in the bin bag too. When I come inside the first thing I do is wash my hands. I would find it gross if DP did this and didn’t wash his hands which he wouldn’t unless he got actual faeces on them .

I think covid has really highlighted the lack of hygiene some people have in normal times. For those of us who automatically wash our hands a lot it isn’t much different now - maybe just a bit more emphasis on how long I wash them for but still 10-20 times a day. For those who don’t normally wash them much it’s apparently a big deal to have to think about it all the time! Dirty buggers.

JingsMahBucket · 05/03/2021 08:23

Some of the posters on here have a really low bar for hygiene and partnership. Of course you need to wash your hands with soap after sorting trash, tying trash bags, stuffing possibly leaky bags into the bins, and touching all other surfaces on the way there or back. This was even before the pandemic!

Why are people feeling patronized by being told to wash their hands?? Is it a sense of shame because you know you should be doing it but basically the government had to (re)teach your grown self basic hygiene?

Hont1986 · 05/03/2021 09:01

You sound hard work. The risk of picking up covid from a surface is very low, and even the brief soapless wash he does after touching the bins reduces it down even further.

doctorhamster · 05/03/2021 09:39

My DH is like this. A quick swill under the cold tap counts as washing his hands. We won't even go into the drying them on the fucking tea towel afterwards.
