Can anyone give me tips for an online (recorded) interview for a civil service position? After applying for hundreds of jobs I've finally got an interview & don't want to mess it up!!

Sorry I did post in Employment but got no response and time is limited

I’ve been on an interview panel on three occasions in the last 12 months and I would say 1- answer the question that’s been asked (you’d be surprised how many candidates have given a fantastic answer but not actually answered my question) 2 - Use the STAR based approach in terms of structuring your answer. 3 - believe in yourself (f**k imposter syndrome) you got this Grin

Don't rush your answers, don't be worried about asking to repeat questions if you need or asking for time.
Be enthusiastic even if nervous.
Jot down notes beforehand..

Have some examples of your experience ready to refer to.
Be honest ...don't try to blag, better to say I haven't experience in that area but I am very willing to take on training

Forgot to add- good luck!

DH does a lot of interviews and his biggest complaint is that the candidates tell him a story about a situation that happened and what the reault was but are completely unclear about what (if anything) they personally did / decisions they personally made, as opposed to actioning someone else’s decision.

‘Do you have any questions?’
Always try to think of something!

If you feel nervous, the Amy Cuddy TED talk on power poses always gives me a little pre-interview boost.

Updating this thread & wonder if anyone has any experience of this. I've received an email saying I've met the required standard for the job I applied for but they are unable to offer me a job at present. I'll be kept on a reserve list for a year. Does anyone know what the likelihood is I'll be offered a job within that time? Really disappointed after all the effort I put into the application process Sad

Sorry to hear that. It's great to know you were appointable though even if you were pipped at the post.

I don't know any figures in terms of recruiting off the reserve lists but I can tell you it happens a fair bit. Interviewing and advertising afresh is an arduous process and if you have someone who's already the required standard then that's a real time and effort saver.

Yep, agree with Princess. It’ll come down to a combination of vacancies, operational need and funding, so it’s really how long is a piece of string. But you will be offered something if a post becomes available, so well done!
