World Book Day - heaven or hell?

Just wondered how the balance swings on World Book Day.

YABU - I love World Book Day and relish sourcing costumes for my children, which I do well in advance and actually relate to a book they like rather than whatever is lying around.

YANBU - Arghh how does it come round so often where did I put the sodding Harry Potter glasses

It's got totally out of control. Our school does a week with something to remember every day. More mental load for Mum. I'm hoping it will be easier to cope with over zoom.

Often see dozens of Elsas plastered over Facebook. It's a film, not a book!

Crazycakelady17 · 27/02/2021 04:29

What also gets on my nerves is the dress as your hobby/sport. We live in quite a quite affluent village but in a typically poor northern town and we have all types of circumstances.
That situation is okay for my DD she does horse riding dance and brownies it’s usually the horse riding that wins but what about the children who’s parents can’t afford them to do extra curricular activities my sister has been in this situation when split for DV DH she borrowed my sons karate kit for my nephew it was heartbreaking luckily she’s doing really well

World Book Day good idea. The way some schools go over the top, not.

ceeveebee · 27/02/2021 07:04

Our school has never done the dressing up part. They just ask each child to bring in their favourite book and then the older kids read them to the younger ones. This year they are doing a massive online reading thing where they will all read the same book together somehow (the book is online)

Edenspirits · 27/02/2021 07:08

We have a world book day rule in our house- I don’t mind which book my DD chooses (DS too old now) so if she wants to choose a Disney story then that’s fine but the costume has to be cobbled together from stuff at home so pillow cases, cardboard, etc!

fightingSmiths · 27/02/2021 07:12

Hate it. I have no money to afford a supermarket outfit and one of the DC has severe autism and doesn't read, doesn't know book characters and hates being dressed up.

Figgygal · 27/02/2021 07:12

I think it’s just a bit of fun bit understand how it’s an additional pressure for some

Ds topic this term was Romans he’s just finished his horrible histories book on the subject so wanted to be a Roman general just got a costume from eBay for £6
Last year he was into beast quest so we made him a costume including a shield and sword Which can be reused

Ijumpedtheshark · 27/02/2021 07:29

My DS hates books so it’s hell trying to persuade him to go as a character from a book he doesn’t even like in the first place.

notdaddycool · 27/02/2021 08:50

Given children don’t go to nursery every day and some kids might miss out on the enjoyment they’ve made it every day next week. It will mainly be avengers costumes we’ve inherited.

cachedelete · 27/02/2021 09:07

Last year kids had to bring their favourite book into school and periodically throughout the day they rang the school bell as the signal to "drop everything and read"
@42andcounting I love that!

MinnieJackson · 27/02/2021 10:28

Our schools pretty good, last year the kids were told to draw their favourite book cover or characters on a white tshirt. It was fab and cheap. This year as their not in they can draw a book cover, act out a book, do a book review or build something with lego/ junk modelling or bake something. I remember waking up when I was in primary school and saying morning mum, it's dress up book day Grin mum was panicking like mad. I went in leggings and took the saddle off my rocking horse and was a jockey 😂

Ilovemaisie · 27/02/2021 12:41

I have just realised from reading stuff on the internet that WBD is when schools will (mostly) still be closed.
So why are you all even worrying or caring.
Just don't do it.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 28/02/2021 21:36

Wish they had chosen any other week to hold it on tbf. It's St David's day in Wales tomorrow and every week WBD clashes with eisteddfod weeks and St David's day celebrations in primaries across Wales.
