to be pissed off at DPs pointless sanding!?

We are decorating the hall. I am trying to reduce sanding as much as possible by priming instead as its layer upon layer of nasty gloss paint and god knows what they are made of. DP insists everything must be sanded for super fine for 'key' - thinks priming is only for fresh wood or fresh plaster walls.

We have painted most of the room up to the picture rail. We have now decided to go over it to the ceiling. DP is again creating a totally unnecessary fine dust of likely lead and oil based paints for us all to breathe in, for the cat to step in and lick off his paws and for it to settle all over the fucking house and land all over the freshly painted work. Its sitting in my throat/ lungs and making me cough. I have a conference call in the adjacent room in an hour.

Yes Lemon YABU you know nothing about fucking DIY! Ye must sand such a small amount so as to make no visible difference to anything but create fine dust to fuck up everything.

No Lemon YANBU why can he not just fucking prime! What a plonker!

He's right.

DPotter · 25/02/2021 11:53

Yep - he's right.

clipcloptrop · 25/02/2021 11:54

He is most definitely right!!! Leave him to it OP.

DinosaurDiana · 25/02/2021 11:54

Is it not easier to just replace it ?

evilkitten · 25/02/2021 11:54

On the whole, he's right, but you need to wear masks etc. - dust is dangerous. Painting on gloss won't give good results, and you might run into oil/water based issues.

Best also to start with the ceiling and work down, but it sounds too late for that.

LemonSwan · 25/02/2021 11:55

Why cant he use primer David?

If I am wrong fair enough but I am struggling with this here! I have done primer on the half of the room I did and it looks exactly the same from a distance and is smoother to the touch.

He’s a plonker, he doesn’t need to sand walls like this.

Bluntness100 · 25/02/2021 11:56

Sorry let me revisit that..your walls are painted with gloss paint?

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 25/02/2021 11:56

What's he sanding? Walls or woodwork? Yes to sanding glossed wood. No to sanding walls! Preparation is KEY (😏) with decorating. Something not everyone does. Means it'll last longer. Not chip off etc. So if it's woodwork he inbu. He wants to do a good job!

DinosaurDiana · 25/02/2021 11:56

I’ve read your post again, and I think that’s enough to LTB !!

jackstini · 25/02/2021 11:59

If it's woodwork, he's right. You can't just put primer on top of loads of old gloss

If it's walls, you're right

We just replaced it all with oiled oak and never had to paint again!

Kendodd · 25/02/2021 12:01

I suspect Lemons husband has recently bought a new sander Smile

LemonSwan · 25/02/2021 12:02

Its a flipping picture rail! its 3 ft above our heads.

Honestly this is small in the scheme of things but this has been going on daily for 6 weeks now as we also had the stairs to do.

I thought it was over!!!! Just leave the flipping picture rail god dammmit!

SeasonFinale · 25/02/2021 12:04

Actually he is not right. There are some excellent primers available nowadays that do not require sanding at all.

Here is one that is highly recommended:

SmallPrawnEnergy · 25/02/2021 12:05

If it's a picture rail, one would assume wood so he's right. What's the point in doing a job if you're not going to do it properly? Sanding will help the paint adhere better rather than slapping on primer over old gloss. That's why we're having to burn off layers and layers of gloss in our house because previous owners thought coats and coats of the stuff was the solution. Why are you letting the cat in the room before it's cleaned though? There's an easy solution for that.

GreenWillow · 25/02/2021 12:06

Yes, of course you need to sand the surfaces.

Remove the original paint, then prime, then paint.

Unless you actually want peeling paint and having to re-do it in a year or so?

BalancedIndividual · 25/02/2021 12:06

For gloss painted surfaces, you still usually need to sand it down.

Not necessarily for a smooth finish...

But because otherwise, your paint might start peeling off in a year or two.

LemonSwan · 25/02/2021 12:07

Thats what I have been using!

I just feel we need to solve this argument now because we have a whole double door to go and thats defo got lead paint on it.

evilkitten · 25/02/2021 12:08

I hate sanding. If it's just the picture rail and it's caked in years of paint, I'd be tempted to just replace it with new. Quick prime and paint job then, and MrLemon can justify getting a new mitre saw :-)

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 25/02/2021 12:10

Fully prepared or not they'll probably both look the same from a distance and newly done. Pop in your time machine op 😏 Only time will tell. My dad used to drive my mum bonkers with his fastidious approach. But his work lasted!! And I'm the same. Do you know, some people paint their walls and
[whispers] they don't even wash them first!!

luxxlisbon · 25/02/2021 12:11

It isn't pointless and definitely necessary for a good finish.
Paint might stick over old gloss using a primer but it will still look caked on and lumpy.

It is an annoying and messy job but necessary.

LemonSwan · 25/02/2021 12:13

I made the mistake of trying to remove the layers of gloss when doing to stair handrail/ spindles. It was not a good idea for numerous reasons. It resulted in an uneven finish as it did not come off evenly. Once you started you had to go right back to wood. Which is no easy task with super thick gloss on a softwood.

Thats why I have had it with the sanding! I am traumatised by the stairs

OP posts:
MasterBeth · 25/02/2021 12:16

The more layers of paint you slap onto a moulded wood finish, the lumper and clumsier it will look. Your husband is right.

MasterBeth · 25/02/2021 12:16

Don’t start with a sander, start with a hot air blaster or chemical treatment.

LemonSwan · 25/02/2021 12:18

Master
So are you saying it needs to go right back to wood
