to ask if this is a London thing?

We live next to a house that is owned by a London HA. The house has its own storage for bin bags right next to the front door but neighbours who moved out last year used to just open their door and chuck their bin bags next to the doorstep. They also never used actual bin bags but multiple carrier bags and the bags would stay there all week until rubbish day (so 24/7).

They finally left (after a multitude of other issues I won't go into detail with) and new tenants moved in at the end of last year. They too ignore the bin storage, open their door and drop piles of blue carrier bags filled with rubbish next to their doorstep.

Is this something that is done in London?! I don't understand the logic - and if I am being honest am bit pissed off we are having to see a pile of food/nappy filled blue bags every single day again - but just pretty baffled?

Its not a London thing, its lazy and ignorant.

Thank you, I could not agree more. Hoped we had seen the end of it with the new tenants but unfortunately not so lucky.

Yes, it’s a London thing. 8 million of us just stack our trash outside our doors.

It’s either a laziness thing or a bit knowing that there’s a bin store because the HA didn’t point it out. That it’s happened with two tenants in a row indicates likely the latter.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 24/02/2021 13:11

Yabu to ask a daft question.

Do you think all 8 million London residents throw rubbish onto their doorstep?

northernweather · 24/02/2021 13:15

Of course I don't assume that all Londoners do it - I meant that is this something that is seen in certain parts of London, rubbish outside front doors in small carrier bags? As it does not happen where I live, particularly using the carrier bags and not black sacks. Maybe a stupid title on my part but just wondered if people would say 'yes I live in xx part of London and have seen lots of households doing it'

They definitely know where the bin store is it's impossible to miss it and very obvious as to what it s.

It sounds like you’re trying to say something in code. By “certain parts of London” are you trying to indicate it may be something that poor people do? Or people from particular ethnic backgrounds? London is a huge city, I expect a minority of people here do dispose of trash like this, but why would it be any more likely in London than anywhere else? It may be that as people in HA properties are likely to have less money than average, they don’t want to pay for proper waste bags when they can’t reuse carrier bags which are free. Or perhaps they’re particularly eco friendly and like recycling bags.

Ilovemaisie · 24/02/2021 13:24

Not just London.
Everywhere.
Literally everywhere.
People are discussing.

Ilovemaisie · 24/02/2021 13:25

Disgusting I meant.

Allgreyeverything · 24/02/2021 13:26

No, I see this every day in the God’s own Country outside every student house. Perhaps it’s a young people’s thing

Ilovemaisie · 24/02/2021 13:27

Oh and in my part of London the people that can't seem to follow simple recycling rules are the 'well educated middle class in their £700 000 Victorian house'.

milinhas · 24/02/2021 13:28

Never seen it anywhere I’ve lived in London (on my 6th flat!) - foxes would have had it al l over the road within the hour which would probably put them off doing it again.

ClaudiaWankleman · 24/02/2021 13:33

Is it on property that they rent? Most boroughs don't let you leave rubbish on the street so I presume so. If so, I don't really understand what the issue is, beyond the fact that they use small blue bags instead of big black ones?
The nappies would still only be contained by a millimetre of plastic, it would just be a different coloured plastic.

Tullyjune · 24/02/2021 13:37

I am not from London and where I live we have wheely bins so I never see neighbours rubbish habits.

I’m just here to ask why a London HA (housing association right?) own a property that’s not in London? Is this the thing I’ve heard of where social housing tenants are being shipped out of London to other areas? I always assumed they just went to a local HA. I had no idea that l London councils were buying up property in other towns and sending social tenants to them. That’s quite shocking (if that’s what’s happening). Talk about social cleansing!!

poppyzbrite4 · 24/02/2021 13:38

Is this something that is done in London?

Is it not what local people do Tubbs?

Of course it's not a 'London thing'. Have you ever ventured out of the wilds into London? Have you observed carrier bags of rubbish piling up outside every house? I live in a deprived area of London and it's not the done thing here as I assume you were referring to 'oiks'.

We use black sacks here, innit.

StrawberrySquash · 24/02/2021 13:40

I have a vague memory that there are certain parts of London where there are v regular collections, every day or two and people put rubbish out in bags for it. Parts of Westminster, I think, probably pretty well off. So is it possible, both lots of people have been used to a similar arrangement?

Yes Housing Association - we only found out it was a London based one after having to look into the owner due to problems with the previous tenant! We are based in the home counties

The problem is the leaving the rubbish outside their house 24/7 rather than putting it in the bin storage - the blue bags was just something that I have noticed has been consistent with the past 2 tenants and thought was strange as they both did it!
OP posts:
northernweather · 24/02/2021 13:48

Thanks all - tbh as much as I wondered about the coincidence of both tenants doing the same thing (at first I thought the first ones were back!) I probably just wanted to vent too! Just pretty fed up of how many people nowadays seem to close their front door and anything outside of it is not their problem

JemimaTiggywinkle · 24/02/2021 13:50

What is the bin storage? Is this instead of having a wheelie bin?

JemimaTiggywinkle · 24/02/2021 13:52

Might need a diagram

SeasonFinale · 24/02/2021 13:52

Are you sure they are not northerners who have moved to London? Wink

TomDickAndHarrods · 24/02/2021 13:53

No.

Mostly ee have wheelie bins in London.

Of course it isn't a 'London thing'.

Talk to your neighbours. Tell them it is unpleasant to leave bags of rubbis outside and they will attract rats and foxes, and show them where the rubbish should go.

We talk to our neighbours in London.

lurker101 · 24/02/2021 13:58

Not a London thing, especially not with the amount of foxes we have! Most of my neighbours would know better, and any that didn’t soon would after seeing their trash all over the road after a pilfering fox 🦊

poppyzbrite4 · 24/02/2021 14:00

There's a fox on my street that just plods around in daylight, cheeky fellow!

Ifailed · 24/02/2021 14:01

Yes, it’s a London thing. 8 million of us just stack our trash outside our doors.

Good news, the population of London is a bit more than that, around 9 million. So at least 1 million of them don't dump their rubbish in carrier bags by the door.
