Is this really essential surgery for a perfectly healthy person?

OP posts:

@TooYoungToNotice

The NHS wouldn't be doing it on a perfectly healthy person. You can't just rock up and ask for smaller boobs. If someone is having this done then their life will be being seriously impacted by their breast size, so of course they need it.
They will however remove completely the healthy breasts of an apparently healthy young woman if she identifies as a man...
ScoobyBlues · 23/02/2021 21:48

I've heard that absolutely every operation and doctors appointment in the country must be run by @123HereComesTheSun who will decide whether it's important enough to take place, so why has this not happened here? It's a disgrace.

I'm going go to organise a protest rally. Meet me at noon with placards shaped like tits.

Hankunamatata · 23/02/2021 21:49

If you have been offered surgery it's obviously for a medical need. So take the surgery.

Newnamefor2021 · 23/02/2021 21:50

Well I'm waiting on surgery to help my hearing, been waiting a few years now. I'll will continue to lose all my hearing if I don't have it, but essentially right now it will just improve my hearing. I am currently classed as moderate to profound loss but I can use hearing aids (which are not a fix like glasses but I can hear when I wear them).

I must be incredibly selfish by your definition as it's not essential or life saving. However if they called me tomorrow I'd be there in a heartbeat.

JesusAteMyHamster · 23/02/2021 21:50

It's really difficult to get breast reduction surgery on the NHS. If a person has qualified there will be a whole, list of reasons.

I've a feeling this is a reverse and you're the one undergoing the surgery ? If so YABU for deeming it unnecessary whether it's for you or anyone else and if it is a bloody reverse yabu for doing it. Hmm

Jurassicperk · 23/02/2021 21:50

If you need to ask this question then you're obviously (and fortunately) not in a position where that surgery would help you.

MatildaTheCat · 23/02/2021 21:51

Yeah, it’s well known they hand this surgery out like smarties.

Is this really essential surgery for a perfectly healthy person?
What an ignorant post
Waxonwaxoff0 · 23/02/2021 21:52

Yes. If it's being done on the NHS then it will be causing the person health issues.

CuntyMcBollocks · 23/02/2021 21:52

YABU. I doubt that it's something that the patient or the NHS has taken lightly. Having large breasts can cause so much pain and discomfort, so I would say its a totally necessary procedure to have at the minute.

Bid876 · 23/02/2021 21:54

The nhs would not be doing a breast reduction for no reason. It will not be cosmetic. As someone with large breast I can tell you that they can cause significant health problems, both mental and physical? Your being very judgemental.

Saywhatyoumeanandmeanwhatyousa · 23/02/2021 21:55

DaphneDuBois · 23/02/2021 21:57

They aren’t healthy if they are suffering back pain which is totally curable with some surgery. Try carrying a heavy rucksack 24/7 for ten years and you might relate.

Musicalmistress · 23/02/2021 21:58

@123HereComesTheSun

Is this really essential surgery for a perfectly healthy person?
Yes it is. It is not an easy operation to qualify for on the NHS & they wouldn't be making appointments for the procedure if it was not deemed (by medical professionals) to be important to the patients health & wellbeing. To qualify for a reduction the person has to be experiencing significant physical issues due to the size of their breasts.
lawandgin · 23/02/2021 21:58

My mum had breast cancer and so had a mastectomy. She has been offered a reduction on the other side. Could be done soon. Affects her mental health on a daily basis (think completely flat on one side an a G cup on the other).

Is she completely selfish?

YABVU and mind your business.

TheChip · 23/02/2021 21:59

Yabu- if they were perfectly healthy, they wouldn't be getting breast reduction surgery!

lioncitygirl · 23/02/2021 22:00

Pretty goody to say something like that and not come back OP. YABVU.

Anon778833 · 23/02/2021 22:00

What a horrible thread Hmm

There but for the grace of god go you...

MrsAvocet · 23/02/2021 22:01

It's very difficult to get a breast reduction on the NHS. It won't be for purely cosmetic reasons. And nor would the hospital in question be carrying out planned surgery if they didn't have the capacity.
It is up to the organisation carrying out the care to determine whether it is appropriate in the circumstances, not the patient. What do you think would happen if this patient declined the surgery that she may well have had a long wait to be offered? They'd just send for someone else off the waiting list and who knows when she'd get another date.
If a Trust has the beds and staff available to safely perform non urgent surgery then they should do. Covid has caused huge backlogs in other aspects of healthcare and as soon as it is safe to do so that needs to be tackled.

Coughsyrupsucks · 23/02/2021 22:01

Not selfish. They are next to impossible to get, so they must be in considerable pain. YABU

RosesAndHellebores · 23/02/2021 22:01

Well 35 years ago I had a friend who was tiny (5ft, tiny frame) who had J cups at least. She suffered not only from back ache but was also developing shoulder problems due to the gravity pull on her shoulders. There was also an issue with bra straps and she had almost open red weals across her shoulders. Add in the wolf whistles and vulgar comments about seeing her feet notwithstanding the difficulty of getting tops/dresses to fit.

It revolutionised her life, physical and mental health.

Veuvestar · 23/02/2021 22:01

I don’t think the breast reduction dept are overwhelmed right now

PatchworkElmer · 23/02/2021 22:01
Hmm
SqeakyHindge · 23/02/2021 22:01

YABU! You should of looked up how hard it is to get breast reduction on NHS!

PurpleDaisies · 23/02/2021 22:02

It’s really difficult to get breast reduction on the NHS. This must be essential for the woman.
