Am I mad to think you can successfully spruce up by painting easily this type of wardrobe. Material is a smooth laminate effect sort. See picture. Thanks.

Search Instagram and YouTube. Loads of people will have done it on there with before and after pictures; if not wardrobes, kitchen cupboards. Definitely use a primer first to go over the shiny effect before painting and remove the handles!

I’m hearing amazing things about French Chic paint and have joined their very active FB group that’s full of photos of people making over stuff like this.

Can highly recommend Zinsser Bin as a primer for painting on smooth or gloss surfaces. We've used it to paint over our varnished skirting boards and doorframes and it still looks good years later. We used an oil based satinwood over the top, but you could use any paint you like.

Give them a light sand.
Then go over them with a really good primer (Zinsser is ££££ but effective!).
Then paint.
You get the best finish by giving it a very quick, very light sanding in between coats.
I used a mini-roller intended for gloss paint, it worked very well.

I did this with my gloss-laminate doors, and just used scrubbable emulsion which has been completely fine (I wanted same finish as walls). I used an eggshell paint on a chest of drawers, that looks good too. The important bit is to make sure to use a good primer to ensure the paint “sticks” properly.

Doing it this way takes 2 or 3 coats in total (primer then paint) so it’s not hugely time consuming and you’ve a huge range of colours to choose from.

I’m using Frenchic on my kitchen cupboards. Self priming. Just a light sand to scratch the surface and then paint ultra thin coats with a light sand between. 3 coats has gone from cream to dark, dark blue. The surface is that plasticy wrap finish.

The zinsser stuff is great, will definitely give you a surface to repaint.

Freddiefox · 23/02/2021 14:19

Frenchic is the way to go, also change the handles , and it will look great. If you go on insta and type in IKEA pax you will get some good ideas for inspiration

A friend just did this. She used Wilkos Cupboard Paint I was really surprised at how nice it looks

My friend did hers using Dulux satinwood. Its what im aiming to use on an old wardrobe i have. Its currently got chalk paint on it and its the worst thing i have ever used.
