To wish the press would remember that ‘Brit’ is not synonymous with ‘English’?

Following boris’s announcement yesterday every paper seems to be running with how ‘Brits’ are happy lockdown is ending on June 22nd or whatever abs how great that is for ‘Brits’ because England play football the following day.
Hmm
There are millions of us who don’t live in England, and millions of us who don’t care about English football (including many English people I would imagine!).

It’s just highly annoying that the rest of us don’t seem to exist. You don’t see the press announcing how thrilled Brits are about Welsh Rugby or N. Irish lockdown down relaxing!

Maybe don’t read shit papers that refer to people as Brits. There are plenty that don’t.

@MasterBeth ha! That’s fair 😂 many still use the same concept though that this restriction lifting is news relevant to the whole country. It’s not.

YANBU.
Although all English are in fact British, even though not all British are English. So an argument could be made that when they write “Brits” in a paper, they’re not talking about all Brits.

But generally I agree with you, such generalisations are very annoying and I’ve grimaced at ones on MN that say “men do....” “women are” or the worst ‘BAME are.,” I’ve called it out before and been squashed with that “but obviously it’s not all men are like that”- or “NAMALT” for short and so on. I like you wish writers would be specific and clear.
