My friend does this in text, I don't know why.

Never seen this before

@Five67Eight

I’ve seen it on here - it’s definitely not just your friend.

I think people think they’re being clever.

Yes! That's it. Nail on head

@IsAnybodyListening

No idea. But an old friend was tagged in a photo on social media the other day and she claimed she was 'So Inbaresst' by the picture and I can't stop thinking about it.
I too, cannot stop thinking about this.

Phonetic spelling is rife these days (I’m probably just exposed to it more due to social media rather than it being more prevalent) and I put it down to people not reading enough and not seeing words written down.

WaxOnFeckOff · 23/02/2021 10:05

I think initially it was a way to get past barriers and swear in emails at work. 🤷‍♀️

FrumpyDumpyDragon · 23/02/2021 10:13

Agree it's probably mostly people who think they're being clever. It looks awful. The first thought that springs into my head when I see it is some sort of condition that causes pain during or after intimacy. (Due to to the "ache" part.) Confused

"Embarest" is so bad!

FrumpyDumpyDragon · 23/02/2021 10:14

Or even "inbaresst"...

AuntieStella · 23/02/2021 10:15

It's because many sites still ban swearing.

MN is not one of them (indeed it used the strapline 'the one with the swearing' for a while)

So it's quite irritating when people use euphemisms here, rather than just being sweary in a place where it's absolutely fine

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 23/02/2021 12:31

I suspect it stems from the days when some text-programmes refused to write swear words, and still some forums refuse to publish it.

Off topic, this brings to mind one of my favourite 'things children say' lines read on here years ago, that a poster had heard their exasperated 3 year old mutter "Oh, fox cakes!" and realised that Mummy should probably curb her language a little Grin
