To hate my heat pump tumble drier? *title edited by MNHQ at OP's request*

After reading on here how amazing they are, I sold my trusty old £20 Facebook marketplace tumble dryer and bought a fancy £400 condenser one, as YOU LOT convinced me it would change my life!

I took the airer to the tip, as apparently you can tumble anything in this bad boy and it won’t shrink or ruin it, so no need for washing hung all over the kitchen.

Well several shrunk t shirts and many creased loads of sheets later I’m thoroughly pissed off with it and would happily swap it for my old £20 one. I could have cried when I got my new white hotel style bed linen out to put on the bed tonight and it looks like a screwed up tissue Sad. I HATE ironing even more than having washing hung up all over the place - this thing was supposed to make my life easier, not make me hours of extra work by having to iron it all.

What am I doing wrong?

Our condenser dryer died recently so we replaced it with a heat pump dryer and it's brilliant! Granted it takes a little bit longer than a traditional condenser dryer, but it doesn't overheat the clothes so nothing shrinks and it all comes out lovely and dry. Never had an issue with shrinking or bedding coming out crinkled - ours has a setting which means nothing needs ironing - provided you get it out of the machine quickly anyway.

Maybe you are overloading it? Ours is a 9kg and can fit our king size bedding set in no problem.

Ps (sorry I keep talking!) In the booklet it says for synthetic you can only dry 3kg worth. In a bloody 8kg dryer!!! I said t ok the guy 'but we've young kids, everything we have is synthetic nearly'. He said that was a pity alright Hmm

We have a heat pump one and have not had any of these issues?? What setting are you using? I don't understand how it can shrink stuff because the whole point of them is that they don't produce masses of heat like the old style ones - unless you are using rapid dry function.

HeatherShimmerIsMyShade · 23/02/2021 11:03

We got rid of our tumble dryer a few years ago, and now only use our heated airer and dehumidifier. Works like a charm. Mind you, I can't wait to start getting the washing dry outside again.

OP do you have a heat pump dryer or a condenser dryer? Because they are not the same thing.

I have a heat pump, it's much better than the vented one. No more creasing than the previous dryer and no more having damp air and fluff everywhere (which is unavoidable regardless of the ventilation in the room)

GreenSlide · 23/02/2021 11:47

@Clymene

I have a full time job and am a single parent. I don't have time to dry stuff on a washing line.
You don't have to physically stand there while it dries. Just peg it out and bring it in.

We have a condenser. Had it for 7 years. Large drum. Have had it insured and fixed a few times though. But clothes come out dry and not really wrinkled. But I read the labels before throwing everything in.

ChiaraRimini · 23/02/2021 12:51

I am a tumble dryer addict but I dry pure cotton duvet covers/sheets over the banisters, they dry nice and flat so don't need ironing (not that I iron anything)

@Tragicroundabout

We replaced a Bosch condenser drier with a Beko heat pump one about 6 months ago and I've been really pleased with it. No damp clothes or creases, but you have to ensure it's not overloaded or it will tend to roll larger items like sheets into a ball. It was a Which recommended one.
Mine is a Beko one - it has great reviews. I just feel like I’ve been duped and want to track down my old £20 and get it back! Will try some of the suggestions on here to put less in.

It’s a heat pump one - I thought the condenser part was because it isn’t vented so I originally called it condenser but then realised when PPs said I need a heat pump one that that’s what I have! Sorry for confusion.

I have a Samsung heat pump. Think it’s great and everything comes out fairly crease free.

I had a washer dryer once which did the whole crease everything up into a ball, and sort of bake the creases in. I absolutely hated it.

Catwoman123 · 23/02/2021 13:18

I have a heat pump dryer..I've never had to iron much since I got it.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 23/02/2021 13:29

It’s this one Beko heat pump tumble dryer

Just had a little panic that I’d accidentally bought a normal condenser one and that’s why it was problematic, but this is definitely the right kind isn’t it?! If anyone has this model please let me know how to get the best out of it! Flowers

Oh gawd. I only ever used my iron for Hama beads Grin. Certainly not getting into that bullshit - I’d rather sell it and use my heated airer - was just trying to get the laundry out of the kitchen as I’ve started a new cake business and can’t risk shaking out washing and letting loose hairs or fluff fall into all my baking stuff!

We have got a cheap Hotpoint Aquarius vented dryer, it's one we got for £59 after the Hotpoint fire in dryer episode. It vents through the wall and is quite quick to dry, I don't notice fluff and damp air going everywhere, DH takes it apart each year to give it a good clean, and clean the vent hole. I was thinking of replacing it with a heat pump one when it gives up, I will reconsider now.

ittakes2 · 23/02/2021 13:33

I've never shrunk anything in a condensor and I used it for hours and hours a day! Maybe you are spinning it on too high in the washing machine, too many things in it at once etc or just don't put them on superdry.
Linen is always tricky - I stop half way through and refluff them though so they don't get caught up with each other and wrinkly.

Put your washing on for an extra spin before drying, it's a gamechanger.
