To cancel this holiday (COVID)

We’ve got a holiday booked in Greece for mid July. It’s yet not fully paid for, so the question is.... is there any realistic chance of this taking place?

(Personally I think I’ve got a better chance of winning the lottery without buying a ticket)

I can't see how anyone can do anything other than guess, you know that no one knows anything that no one else knows.

AnneElliott · 22/02/2021 19:28

Potential that full restrictions will be lifted by June. The question is are you ok with meeting Greece's requirements and potential quarantine on the way back?

Thirtyrock39 · 22/02/2021 19:28

I'm in the exact same boat! Greece 12th July - at the moment I feel like I don't want to go as feels wrong and a bit selfish but I know the rest of the family are desperate to go as we obv rescheduled from last summer. I've a feeling it'll be like last year where they keep pushing the dates back. We were due to fly mid July to zante last year and the flights weren't running from our airport till about the 21st so our holiday wouldn't have happened anyway last year but it was stressful not knowing either way and we ended up moving it about a month before we were due to go, I'd be delighted with a week in the uk by the sea

Youllbeoldertoo · 22/02/2021 19:28

International travel is allowed after may 17

Thirtyrock39 · 22/02/2021 19:29

It may be allowed but there's still a big risk with quarantine, high risk hotels etc costs of tests etc ...I thought there may have been some info as to whether these measures are still likely to be in place come summer

DuzzyFuck · 22/02/2021 19:30

Be aware that if YOU cancel now you'll very likely lose your deposit. If you wait and it can't go ahead you should be entitled to a refund.

crosspelican · 22/02/2021 19:39

I would say that will almost certainly be going ahead UNLESS cases have gone up a LOT in Greece by the time you travel and it gets put on a red list.

Nobody can predict what quarantine or testing requirements etc. will be like by then, but I should say that you're almost certainly going to be allowed to travel.

There is no practical reason to cancel. If your flights are cancelled by the airline, you'll get your money back. I would just play it by ear.

HobbyBaker90 · 22/02/2021 19:40

We were due to be going away in May. Got moved from last year. We have just moved again to next year. Although hopeful things will resemble some sort of normal by later this year, we decided we'd rather wait until next year where fingers crossed it'll be back to full normality and we get our moneys worth. No-one can know but I'd go with whatever your gut is telling you!

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 22/02/2021 19:40

I'm in the same boat re NYC in July!

It's only a 5 day trip and I simply could it quarantine when I come home. That's what I'm worried about more than the restrictions.

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 22/02/2021 19:41

*simply couldn't

lambo88 · 22/02/2021 19:48

We've got a holiday booked also flying out on the 10th July...we also had to move our dates from last year as missed the deadline with Greece allowing u into the country and my work wouldn't let me adjust my holiday dates...we would be happy to go this year if we are allowed as we are on our own in a villa...just have to wait and see what happens xxx

ILoveSlipperss · 22/02/2021 20:15

@Youllbeoldertoo

International travel is allowed after may 17
That is subject to review
goingpearshaped · 22/02/2021 20:17

We moved our was 2020 now 2021 booking to 2022. Cost a bloody fortune but can't isolate on return as DH can't wfh and does not get paid or have enough holiday. Would fully assume isolation needed (and would always do it) and also costs of tests. So expensive to move again but hoping next year is brighter. UK this year.

thirstyformore · 22/02/2021 20:19

Bloody hope so. I'm supposed to be going in June.

imamearcat · 22/02/2021 20:23

We went to Greece similar times last year. So I don't see why not. I wouldn't pay more if it's not cancellable / transferable.

kazillionaire · 22/02/2021 20:35

I have two weeks in Bulgaria booked for June 4th, booked up last Feb and am praying it goes ahead, I need this holibobs!

DuzzyFuck · 22/02/2021 21:14

Just to add, as a travel professional : quarantine on arrival in your destination DOES class as a major change to a package holiday and is subject to the refund clause for ABTA bonded operators.

Quarantine on return home does not, BUT it's unlikely that good operators will force you to travel (or cancel at your own expense) if that's the case on return from your destination country.

If for example Spain allow Brits in, but Brits have to quarantine for 10 days on return from Spain, it's likely that the big operators (TUI, Easyjet Holidays, Jet2 etc) will cancel the flights and/or offer the option to bow out for an exchange/refund. It's not viable for them to operate half empty flights. Planes are cheaper to leave on the ground than fly at less than half capacity.

Porcupineintherough · 22/02/2021 21:44

There's simply no way of knowing. For one thing, it's not just up to the UK government, Greece will have it's own ideas and restrictions. I would think it wants tourism to return desperately but may decide that it will market itself to the vaccinated only. At the very least I'm sure it will all be dependent on case numbers here and there.

Thank you @DuzzyFuck for such an excellent summary, I will send you a virtual Galaktoboureko

Not 100%

AngryBananaSund · 01/06/2021 15:54

Just to update my own thread, we’ve rescheduled our Greece holiday next month to July 2021

Partly, this is because the situation is still very confused and may be getting worse, but mainly because the change was cost free - as long we did it now (ish)

So this year in place of the sun drenched breaches of Greece and hot sultry nights in quint tavernas it will be the rugged beauty of Devon and two for one offers in the Rose and Crown

OP posts:
NicknamesAreLikeKleenex · 01/06/2021 16:00

Guessing you mean July 2022?

AngryBananaSund · 01/06/2021 16:37

I of course mean July next year

OP posts:
newnortherner111 · 01/06/2021 17:10

The Rose and Crown will be quiet by the time you go to Devon, as it will be long after England have been knocked out of the Euros!!!
