Dog thefts

Every day I am seeing posts about dog theft on local news sites and social media. It's almost always a report that a dog was "nearly stolen" or that someone was following a dog walker or talking to a dog, or a suspicious person (nearly always "foreign" or "Irish") took a photo of a dog, or a white van was seen driving round where dogs are walked. You get the idea.

But... Very rarely have any dogs actually been stolen.

Several local police forces have said in local news or on their social media that they haven't had any reports of dog theft recently. One said the last report they had of a stolen dog in the whole large city was in May 2020, yet if you were to read the social media posts in the same area you'd think dogs were having their leads cut and being grabbed out of the arms of their owners while out on walks every other day.

Another local police force hasn't had a report of a stolen dog since July 2020, and that was a spate that were all linked and all involved dogs being stolen overnight from outdoor kennels belonging to breeders or farmers. Yet again, everyone in the area is whipped into a frenzy with women saying they are too scared to walk their dogs because there are so many dogs being stolen while out on walks.

What's going on? I know dogs do get stolen, and that there is apparently an increase in reports of dog thefts this year, but are dogs really being snatched off the street while being walked? And I don't mean, have you heard lots of reports of it happening to someone's cousins hairdresser, I mean is this really happening?

Didn't meant to enable voting! But now I have I guess it's YABU for yes, this type of dog theft is a very real problem and there is evidence it's happened to lots of people and YANBU for no, there doesn't seem to be any evidence that this type of dog theft is a real problem

There are similar posts here but we have had a lot of dogs stolen!

Litters of puppies, dogs snatched during walks, taken from gardens.

Not maybes, almosts, or frioend of a friend of a friend. Police reports, pictures, people I know.

I see threads here dismissing the fb claims, but here... people do take additional care because, amongst the usual scaremongering, there are a lot of real posts about real dogs being taken.

And a man with 15 bitches he had stolen, must have been with specifc markets n mnd as they were all bitches and of 3 breeds.

A friend whose 4 week old pups were disappeared one night, without their mother.

Next door whose railings were zip strapped and her dog taken - how they missed mine I don't know (he's quite a posh breed, maybe too many teeth!? (smile) )

They are definitely happening where I am. Break ins to kennels and now dog walking vans being stolen with dogs inside!!

'near misses' too, i.e. vans pulling up and asking suspicious questions, but when several people point out the same description of van independently it is worrying.

Luckily mine is nervous and wouldn't get within grabbing distance of anyone but I have also heard of owners being man handled to get to the dog.

People are understandably on high alert

I suggest you check the lost (and the reunited) lists of Doglost for a few weeks. Some of those "lost" will later turn out to have been stolen (missing from garden etc, disappeared on walks sometimes later found to have been seen being bundled into vehicles or turn up roaming in areas several hundreds of miles away, having been dumped, a few weeks later). Dog theft is very common especially now people are willing to pay crazy prices for small dogs, spaniels and any puppy. Dog snatching failed attempts are not logged by police so don't appear in figures relating to dog theft and authorities but in my area are happening most weeks.

Lots of reports of it in my area to (Glasgow). Not from anyone I know personally but its certainly concerned me enough that I have stopped my teen kids walking the dog. I have spoken to them about how to deal with a situation if it arose but I'm sure they would panic in the moment. The guilt they would feel is the overriding concern for me.
So, I'm left with no choice but to be present on all dog walks until things settle down (God knows when that will be). Better safe than sorry.
