To ask about boys voices breaking?

I’m wondering if my 11 year olds is starting to break although it seems young to me. He sounds a bit deeper but almost like he’s got a cold / sore throat sort of thing. Is this how it starts? He’s grown about 3 inches in nearly 3 months but is still quite short at around 5 ft. Just wondering if it could be his voice breaking as I grew up with sisters and dont really have any experience. Thanks.

I hope you don’t mind if I follow this post OP. I have sons and am curious about this as my brothers are much older than me and my DH doesn’t remember it happening to him.

SpringSunshineandTulips · 21/02/2021 23:20

Of course not @Thesearmsofmine

Absolutely. I have a 10 year old who started puberty age 9 and his voice is breaking.

DramaAlpaca · 21/02/2021 23:26

It's on the young side but it certainly could be, especially as he's had a growth spurt.

I've three sons and their voices all broke at 13. DS1 and DS3 pretty much woke up one day with deeper voices, DS2's skated up and down a bit for a few weeks until it settled down. Voices breaking coincided with a growth spurt with all of them.

Yes my DD has just turned 13 and his voice is breaking. He does sound a little like he's got a heavy cold

Sh05 · 21/02/2021 23:32

DS not DD!

My brother’s voice broke when he was 11 (just before 12). He left primary school with a high voice and started secondary with a low one.

No help here but has sort of forgotten that was a thing Confused Grin! I do remember being 14 and calling my best mate and his mum saying “he won’t speak to any of us, only you 🙄” and him basically yodelling down the phone to make us laugh.

WaltzForDebbie · 21/02/2021 23:35

I think it usually happens about a year after the first signs of puberty.

CorianderBee · 21/02/2021 23:38

Lol just don't make fun of him when he occasionally slips into a falsetto mid sentence 😂

Crazycakelady17 · 21/02/2021 23:50

It definitely could be I have two Ds eldest was 11 still at primary school but September birthday so oldest in year, ds2 was 13 he went to stay with grandparents for 2 weeks over summer went really squeaky came back with a great biig deep gruff voice

Sparklingbrook · 22/02/2021 00:02

I feel like a bad Mum because I never noticed it happening at all with either of mine. Blush It obviously did but I've no recollection of anything.

itwillbehormones · 22/02/2021 00:28

Both of mine were pretty much 13 years old, and for both of them it just gradually deepened, no squeaking or tone changes just a daily change that we didn't really notice tbh.

Until they spoke to grandma and she didn't regonise their voice!

It was the same time as growth spurts, increased showers and about a year later shaving.

GobletOfIre · 22/02/2021 03:32

DS voice is breaking at the moment and he’s 12. It’s been a few weeks of occasional yodelling and is starting to settle. He’s shot up and had his first shave (tache only). I think it’s helped, not being at school, as no one has teased him.

Five67Eight · 22/02/2021 03:45

Marking place.

DS and his friend are 12 - 12 1/2. One of them has his deeper voice. The others, no sign yet. One will be 13 in July. DS just turned 12 last month.

11 seems young, but clearly well within the realms of normal.

BusterGonad · 22/02/2021 03:50

My son is 12 (and 4 months) and his voice gets very squeaky and he needs to clear his throat. I'm guessing it's his voice starting to break? My husband certainly thinks so.

Me too! Neither of mine did a sudden change, instead their voices gradually got deeper. DS1 had a massive growth spurt aged 12 and his voice started to deepen then. DS2 was later, around 15 I think.

It's tempting isn't it?

Our youngest has just turned 14 and his broke last year, he's now like Barry White. Scooby Doo does kick in every now and then though.

Sparklingbrook · 22/02/2021 09:07

@EmmaGrundyForPM I remember Dad phoning, DS1 answering and Dad thinking he was DH at some point. I think like you it must have been very gradual.

ittakes2 · 22/02/2021 09:37

My son is 14 and I noticed when he was 11/12 he had a few friends whose voices had already broken.

amusedbush · 22/02/2021 11:15

I think my brother was about 13. It happened really quickly too, like he went into his room to play on his Xbox one day and came back out with a deep voice and armpit hair (which he was incredibly proud of and would show off to anyone who stood still long enough Grin)
