This opportunity would allow me to practice and expand my skills and knowledge in this area, increasing my future employment chances.

I believe experience with your company would be invaluable in steering me in the right direction and eventually helping me to secure a job which I will thrive at.

OR

I would love the opportunity to work with your company so that I can gain insight into the direction I wish to look further at. I am currently looking at X role and the experience with you will be informative and helpful for my future and I would appreciate the opportunity.

Some shite like that?

Emphasise what you can give them, not the other way around.

Unless they've said its a development opportunity, in which case echo their language back at them.

killickthere · 21/02/2021 21:29

it's NOT ABOUT YOU! It's about them. so why do you want to work for them, what will you bring that they can't get elsewhere why should they want you? they don't give a damn about you at this point, only what you might bring to them.

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 21/02/2021 21:31

Agree with tell them what you offer.

Show that you're very motivated in their sector and excited to join.

Land the gig first, then look for ways to make it work for you.

typicalvalues · 21/02/2021 21:33

She's not being paid. It IS about her and what they can offer her. Taking on a student for work experience is never in a company's best interests unless law firms or something as someone has to train you/babysit you.

zzizzer · 21/02/2021 21:42

Even when its work experience they're expecting you to begin to know how to play the game.

You need a light touch approach which is more like "I would love to develop my experience as I've heard you're the best at such and such, and I am keen to work in the industry" followed by "about me and why I'd be great".

Not a tone of "I know nothing but am desperate to work in your industry, please give me a job, teach me so I can have a better career - it will help me out no end, I really want it".

One sounds enthusiastic and like a potential future colleague with ideas; the other sounds like its all about them, they'd need hand holding and would be hard work.
