To ask how much you spend on a UK holiday

Maryofscots · 21/02/2021 18:05

I've not been on holiday in the UK for many years as I find it much cheaper to go abroad. We are considering it this year due to the way things are. So if we are allowed to, say in August, for a week, how much would you expect to spend? I know there are loads of variables here but still curious/hoping to find some form of average or idea. Thanks in advance

Keen to know as well. However last experience was not worth it.

TheGoogleMum · 21/02/2021 18:09

If its at all possible to avoid August I would as everywhere will be very expensive to stay in the UK

Pizzaandgarlicdip · 21/02/2021 18:12

We did Brighton for 5 nights last summer and to be honest it cost a fortune.
Admittedly we don’t choose cheap hotels or scrimp when we’re away but I really did begrudge how much we spent to stay in grey rainy England when we could have gone abroad for the same cost.

Off the top of my head for DP and I -
Hotel for 5 nights = £700
Parking = £120
Eating out = £500 (sounds a lot but it goes quickly with 5 days of eating a lunch and dinner out plus drinks)
Activities = £250 (crazy golf, miniature train, a massage each)

If we can’t go abroad this year we’ll just have a week at home in the garden. Luckily DP is self employed and I can take annual leave whenever I like so we’ll probably leave it last minute and choose a sunny week. But really really hoping we get to go to Greece as planned instead

clary · 21/02/2021 18:14

It really depends on where you go and how big a place you want, are you camping, staying in a house etc.

For a guide, we used to go to Pembrokeshire and stay in a house v near the sea that slept six (five in family); houses that sleep four are a lot cheaper and easier to find! I imagine it would now cost about £1000 pw, tho this year prices will probs be higher.

Add in travel to get there and drive around, and food. We used to cook in the house and go out for a couple of meals but some people prefer to eat out daily. We budgeted about £150-200 pw for food and eating out.

Also will you be doing expensive things like horse riding, theme parks, tennis lessons - or are you happy with walks and bucket and spade? We just spent a lot of time on the beach which is cheap/free.

Remember that (for example) Northumberland is probably cheaper, inland is certainly cheaper; Cornwall is a lot more expensive (and very very busy in August). HTH

scoutingfornarwhals · 21/02/2021 18:15

Camping about £10-£20, self catering about 3k for a fortnight for 5 of us.

Coasterfan · 21/02/2021 18:16

Do you mean for the holiday or spending money? We spend £200 to £300 a day depending what we are doing. I don’t cook on holiday but a day on the beach is cheaper than a day paying for an attraction. In terms of the holiday, it varies wildly depending where you go, we have paid from £20 a night for a basic campsite through to £2k for a week in a caravan on a haven site in cornwall. There is something for all budgets, although I know it is more expensive this year. This year we have a beachfront apartment in devon first week in august for £700 but I booked it last august.

notanothertakeaway · 21/02/2021 18:17

Have you considered a home exchange? We've had good experiences. Holiday is free, and I expect that this year, people will be happy to agree in principle, and agree to confirm / cancel at the last minute, depending on Covid

ExTeacherNowJustMom · 21/02/2021 18:18

We never spend more than £800 for a week (2 adults, 2 children, 1 dog). We have stayed mainly in cottages by the coast (Devon, Cornwall, Dorset, Norfolk) But we have also done caravan parks too. We tend to book at least 9 months early in order to get the price a bit cheaper. I’ve noticed that our holiday this year has already changed in price to over £900 but when we booked at Xmas for August, it was just over £700. It all depends on what you want from a holiday. Would you consider caravan or lodge or cottage or hotel or B&B? Do you want to be in the countryside or by the sea? North or south? Camping is always cheaper but you need the kit first. We usually always book through Hoseasons or Cottages.com. If Boris announces that holidays are allowed in the summer, expect there to be a price hike so might be worth looking ASAP.

SellFridges · 21/02/2021 18:19

We frequently holiday in the UK. At least once a year in normal times. All prices are for two beds.

Center Parcs weekend = £800ish

Week in Cornwall (May Half Term) - £1000

Week in Cornwall (August) - £1300

City Break weekend (London/Brighton/Similar) - £400

That’s just for accommodation. You can usually spend what you like when you’re there but I would usually guess at something around £100-150 a day for us. Some it’ll be £20 on ice creams and back for pasta. Some it will be a day trip plus dinner and drinks.

Wowzer! That's a lot! The £120 for parking annoys me the most! Thanks for breakdown

We’ve had many a luxury caravan holiday in the UK, we normally spend approx £500 for the caravan for the week and then £100 a day on going out and eating out. Thankfully we have been really lucky weather wise in the uk. I can only think of 2 holidays in the last 14 years that have had atrocious weather,

There isn’t no way we would get a holiday abroad for 4 of us for that price, we’d also need passports and new clothes for going away,

Rollercoasteride · 21/02/2021 18:22

Just booked a caravan in Dorset, directly with the owner, in the summer holidays. It's costing 1k.
Most sites are charging between 1.5k and 2k for a caravan! Crazy as you can go all inclusive in Spain for that.

ginsparkles · 21/02/2021 18:22

We mostly holiday in the uk and find it cheaper than abroad, but we stay self catering and cook one meal at the cottage most days. We also never go during the summer holidays. We tend to go during one of the half terms instead. It means we can do two trips; a weeks holiday and then a long weekend for around £1,000 for the accommodation.

TheFuckingDogs · 21/02/2021 18:25

Also did Brighton for 5 nights last summer. Hotel was about £500 with a sea view right by the pier.
Maybe £50 a day on food/drinks for 3 of us, another hundred on the pier, golf etc
Got lucky though weather wise, was as hot as Spain that week!

TheFuckingDogs · 21/02/2021 18:26

And yes parking in Brighton is pricey

SpnBaby1967 · 21/02/2021 18:27

We usually book a top of the range caravan at haven. Tends to set up back around £800+ then another £800-£1000 spending money. We do 4 nights, 5 days & eat out for all meals except breakfast.

raspberryk · 21/02/2021 18:28

2 years ago roughly £1000 for a week in the cheapest week of the summer holidays in a small air bnb or caravan in Devon.
Plus spending, fuel, activities and food.
4 years ago 2xdc and I a week last minute in October half term, Ibiza, all inclusive inc flights and transfers £900.

hopeishere · 21/02/2021 18:29

I will only book a house that is as nice or nicer than my own. So it can be £££.

I had not considered this. How would this work in terms of things like where you find a 'match' and insurance?

Nice cottage near coast for family of 4 plus dog usually around £1000 to £1300 for a week.

Mintjulia · 21/02/2021 18:30

Beautiful one bed cottage in Cornwall for one week, plus bike hire, close to the Tarka trail, cycling distance of Wadebridge and Padstow, plus welcome hamper was £900 in 2019.

ExTeacherNowJustMom · 21/02/2021 18:30

Once you’ve paid for your accommodation, the extra money you will need for the holiday completely depends on what you like to do. We usually budget for 3 evening meals out and easy lunches (think Greggs!) but otherwise we do a big supermarket shop and cook at the cottage. We spend a lot of our holidays doing free stuff like the beach, walks, alongside cheap fun like arcades, funfairs, touristy things. I doubt we spend more than £50 a day. We plan for our holiday expenses by saving money each month in a sealed tin, as well as keeping loose change ready for the arcades or ice creams. We open the tin on the night before the holiday and we are always pleased with how much we have saved. Last time we had over £200 in there! This means we can treat ourselves and pay for boring things like parking without feeling the pinch.

middleager · 21/02/2021 18:31

We've been holidaying in the UK for years.

We tend to go to Cornwall, 5 days in a hotel with breakfast and dinner and spends on top is usually around 2k. This was St Ives and the same chain in Newquay was significantly cheaper. This is for two rooms though.

We've also done Butlins in the hotel with Premier dining (one room with bunks). or the Gold/seaside chalets with Premier dining. This is usually 2k with spends.

Last year we stayed in a hotel in Bournemouth with a pool for 5 nights. We had two rooms (DC are teens) and it was £1500 without food.

HappyasLaura · 21/02/2021 18:32

Hmm I’ve only ever been on holiday in the UK once, we did 4 nights in St Ives at Easter last year. I think it was around £2k. We rented a 2 bed air bnb apartment with a sea view, it was nice but nothing special. I thought the whole thing was expensive for what it was.

HappyasLaura · 21/02/2021 18:32

Sorry the year before.
