I tried in money matters but go no response.

DS is 10, he currently has a bank account held in trust with £50 in it
I want him to take more responsibility for his money, teach him to save.
Would you give control of the account now, money would need to be withdrawn in cash or transfered so I could buy him stuff online until he's old enough for a card.

Or would you keep the account in trust and get him Gohenry or similar for his pocket money. DH is quite anti the prepaid cards as they are quite expensive.

YANBU - Give him the account
YABU - Get him Go henry.

I would wait until he's 11 and then open a current account with a debit card. I transfer money by standing order every month to my 2. I refuse to pay for a prepaid card

Did your kids get pocket money before they turned 11?

Yes, but I just gave it in cash before then. If they wanted something ordered they gave me the money and I ordered it for them

My kids got pocket money from 5. Not a lot but enough to buy little toys or sweets or save to get bigger things.
At 12 they got an allowance to buy clothes. Not essential clothes like uniforms, basics, shoes and undies but extras like holiday clothes or brand names. They could then negotiate with me if they wanted say a designer T-shirt or particular backpack- I’d pay the basic “Asda price” and they paid the difference. They had enough for several upgrades but not enough for everything they wanted! They fast learned the value of money and budgeting.
They are now in their 20s and seemed to manage student finances much better than their flat-mates.

We give DD cash each week and she has to save half and the other half can go in her spend jar. She knows if she wants something bigger she has to save her spend money each week. It has made her appreciate money and overall she is careful what she spends her money on, of course some weeks she spends it on utter crap but its hers to choose how she spends.
Like others if she wants something ordering she will give us the cash.
