What will it take for humans to radically improve their treatment of other animals?

The news about bird to human transmission of avian flu in Russia got me wondering. Surely it's only a matter of time before our mistreatment of animals (intensive farming etc) leads to another pandemic.

Even though so many of us are absolutely broken from the current pandemic, I'm not seeing any major shifts in attitude to factory farming/ cheap meat and dairy etc. How bad does it have to get before we change our ways?

Social attitudes need to turn against meat eating, to put it bluntly.

Wow, MilkTwoSugars! What currency is that? Canadian dollars? Yikes. That said, I can remember the last time I ate an apple or grapes. I'm not a fruit fan... I wonder how affordable (or not) my main ingredients would be. I eat quite a lot of vegetables, but some of them are frozen or tinned as well as fresh.

Sparklfairy, yes I think we're very close to creating lab-grown meat. Must be frustrating for you to feel tied into eating meat/eggs when you're not even that keen.

Its crap. But tbh it's my own fault for being a greedy fucker and putting the weight on in the first place Grin

What currency is that? Canadian dollars? - I assume so. I think it's northern Canada and I realise it's extreme, but it really did make me stop and think. The thought of a small bag of apples being 10% of the cost of my weekly shop 😱 ... and I'm feeding a teenager!

Extinction of the human race. Near extinction would only mean we went back to more widespread use of horses etc.

Many people live from week to week or month to month financially and so low cost of food matters to them a great deal. Tackling the inequality that gives this would be the first step forward.

There really is an end in sight. Lab grown meat is ready, the tech is there and its being grown now. Its being served in a restaurant already. Billions of dollars have been invested in scaling up the lab grown meat in in the next few years it should be on shelves worldwide and should be cheap. Lab grown seafood already exists and lab grown dairy milk is underway. Its fascinating to read up on. Factory farming will die off over coming years as lab grown meat gain scale and acceptance and becomes a cheap and healthier version of killed meat/fish.

Excellent thread @WankmasterBastardDeLaShithead. I posted a similar thread recently asking if humans got what we deserve - Covid - because of our attitude towards animals. My thread was deleted because I criticised other countries' treatment of animals.

@FrostyChocolateMilkshake, the treatment of pangolins is indeed horrible but I'm surprised you haven't had the piss taken. I was told by some mnetters that it was no worse than eating a pig! Last time I looked, pigs weren't critically endangered, trafficked for their skins or boiled alive.

We need to call out cruelty wherever it occurs in the world. Thank God there are organisations out there campaigning against bear bile farming, dog meat festivals etc. Unfortunately, its all about money and trade agreements so governments turn a blind eye.

I think it will take a massive pandemic on the scale of the Black Death before people wake up. The scientific consensus is that it's only a matter of time before one hits as we seem unwilling to stop our exploitation of the planet.
